New CL100 Owner

Thanks. Yes, I used my dremel to slot the head of that screw and just barely got it free with the blade bit on my impact driver, so it's now thoroughly trashed.

Trek talked me into picking up a stainless engine bolt kit from this guy a while back: http://www.alloyboltz.com , and I've been replacing old screws as I go. I'm really glad I got it! Bob (the guy who puts the kits together) is very nice and responsive if you have any trouble.

Thanks for the anti-seize tip, too. I've been using silver Permatex.

I've been hoping to post an update on the cam chain for a while now, but there's been much drama with the rotor puller- first they sent the wrong one, then they sent the right one to the wrong address. (At least, I hope it's the right one; I should have my hands on it soon.) The good news is, I've been keeping busy with a new project.

I'll post more in a bit.

Hells yeah! I just caught this thread. Bike looks great. I like the hard boxes and rack on the back. Was thinking of something like that for the XL if everything works out..

Thanks, fellas. grcamna5, I'm surprised you didn't guess from the photo- it's a '74 (so technically an XL). I think it's the only year Honda sold them in that kind-of-cool, kind-of-hideous burnt orange, but maybe I'm wrong. Also, for better or worse, it's another 100. And the title will be mine! I'll elaborate in the new thread.

Adventurco, I love my cheap ammo box panniers. Here they are looking a little dusty after a long ride.

They rob the bike of a little of its fabulous 70's styling, but they increase utility by an order of magnitude (pizzas). Because of the XL's taller suspension and low pipe I might look for something a bit bigger than fat 50s when I set it up. Could the Tusk aluminum boxes work on your 350? (I follow the turd with great anticipation.) The best thing about the ammo panniers is the price. They come out to less than $40 each, with mounts, h/w, paint, locks, and stickers- including mechatronic Godzliia, every 100cc Japanese scrambler's spirit monster:

I could probably make either one work. But the price of the ammo panniers is more where I'm looking at the moment. Plus Godzilla. Do you have a link for them - and is the luggage rack off the back part of the setup or separate (separate, I'd assume)? I may have to add them to my (long) shopping list. Its for wayyyy down the line once I get the more important bits sorted out, but I hope to do some ADV riding on the old girl when shes back rolling.

Adventurco, I got the ammo cans from this dude on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/FAT-50-PA108-AMMO-CANS-LOT-OF-2-CANS-/271550478550 . He's nearby but couldn't arrange a time for me to pick them up, so I had to pay the $10 shipping. There aren't a ton of the fat 50s, which can make them tough to find at your local army surplus.

The rack is a vintage Triple-A that was made for the CL100, also from eBay. It wasn't setup for panniers so I had to modify the stays and add a couple new stays and mounts.

Awesome. Those Fat 50s are badass. I'm wondering if they may be too small for the XL, but I will make some cardboard mockups to check the scale. Something like 50% bigger may be exactly what I need. The ammo can look is pretty rad though, will definitely look into luggage racks and mounting options. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction

Cardboard mock-ups really helped with my panniers, for judging scale and also determining clearance with the pipe and signals.

That'd be my guess. The scrambler can sometimes look normal in photos but really it's a 2/3-size motorbike. After riding my big bike I feel like Kareem Abdul Jabbar when I throw my leg over it.

I think US Army Merimite cans will work well for good size large hardbags;I've read numerous threads online where folks have used them.

The aluminum mermite cans are interesting. The look is perfect for an enduro bike. They appear to be sought after by collectors, though, so it might be tough to find a bargain.

I finally got my hands on the rotor puller! If I'd known what it was I could've just made one myself (basically an M14 bolt with a slight smooth taper on the end). The good news is, replacing the cam chain was really easy. I also took out the old tensioner and compared it with the new one. It had the same springiness and profile, and only minor grooves where it contacts the chain, so I reinstalled it and tossed the new one in the parts bin for later.

Thanks again for your tips, grcamna5!

Seems like mermite cans would be huge on a CL100. Ammo box might make more sense.

I'm glad the cam chain job worked good for you;did you reset your timing ?

That would be the smart thing to do, eh? Thanks for pointing it out! I'll reset it after work today.

I was looking into Merimite boxes for the XL. they sure are a pretty penny on eBay. Looks like I will be keeping my eye out for army surplus stores and estate sales and hope for a deal

This site is good for browsing: https://colemans.com/product-category/containers/ . I didn't see any mermite boxes, though.

These look a little flimsy, but I bet they're light: https://colemans.com/shop/containers/aviator-s-kit-box-container-aluminum/ . You could mount the bottom to the rack and add a piano hinge and leashes so they open like BMW system cases.

adventurco,I could sell the one to you and then you'd only need to find one more;I'm over by Pittsburgh,PA. and if you want a pic PM me.
