New to DTT! 71CL350 Cafe Project

scored some new shocks too.

Looks like the clevis end is wider than the stockers, so longer bolts and some shims are required.

I went down to the local industrial hardware place and picked up those same parts for under 8 bucks in stainless! I love having a great hardware place nearby.

Hmmmm.... The stock shocks were 12 7/8" inch, so I got 13 3/16" As replacements, figured I'd sag into them being a heavier guy.
Now the center stand doesnt hold up the bike as good as it did... wobbly :/

On a happier note, some progress was made.
Got the exhaust nearly finished. Need to weld a tab to hang the mufflers on.
Got the throttle cable installed.
Found out my petcock is junk and leaks....

HA! I like the ear protection wrapped around the traffic cone. Is that for grinding or for those exhaust pipes? :p The front of the tank sits up a little high IMO. Perhaps a tank that doesnt have that up sweap would be better suited..?

Yeah the Ear-pro was for shortening the pipes some more, so the mufflers do not contact the new shocks. I'm all of 26 years old and I have terrible hearing. Gotta save what little hearing I have!

I was hoping to build a battery box, wire the bike up, and start it this weekend.
Guessing that won't happen as my petcock leaks, and I havent mocked up a batt box yet. LOL

So i have that CL tank, but I also have a CB tank (with pinholes...). How would I make it sit lower?

Keep the ideas coming!

The CL tank has that upturn build into it.. you'll find the CB tank will have a more level look just the way it comes. the CL and CB frames are identical so the tank rubber mounts are in the same place.

Are you going to put heat shields on the mufflers?

I wasnt planning on it. Hoping my legs will be a little forward of them.... *

*sizzling skin may be included.

Looks like you should be ok. Just be extra careful when dismounting, haha. However, if rear sets are in your future, I'd consider it. Plus, you can make them look pretty rad.

+1 on the CB tank.. and yeah heat sheilds can be pretty badass lookin if you customize them. You can cut out a stencil and trace it onto a thin sheat of steel. Then cut it out and run the metal through a roller to get it to contour to your pipes.. follow me?

That does sound pretty badass! I did an image search to see what people come up with, and I've got some Ideas.

So this is ow today started.

Picked up sone 1/8" c channel to make seat pan mounts. Do some trimming and fitting... voila! If only I had a welder.....

nice and strong. Doubles as a shock support.
frame cleaned up where It needs to be welded...

My friend happened to be working on a gokart at his shop down the road.... and he has a welder... HMMM....

If only I had a pickup truck....
This cannot be a good idea!

Honda within a Honda? Hondception!!!!!
Went in pretty easy :)

So i get to weld a few times a year, and my welds are rarely pretty. Rear mount after grinding :)

front and rear welded in

measure, drill holes. Mark pan from underneath....

I worked for the Ferrari dealership in Las Vegas for a while, and our parts/runner car was a Rosso Corsa painted Element. That thing would swallow up any parts we needed in that huge back end. We put a brand new crated up 612 V12 engine in that thing once, lol.

Bike looks awesome by the way. I love CL pipes on anything.

pardon the goober welds. I need to grind em smooth....

Clevis Pins. I'll trim them down and use cotter pins on the underside to hold the seat pan on.

test fit.
Snug with the tank. I have to lift the tank to drop it in place....

Got home from my buddies shop, and found a tail light kit from omars dirt track racer on my doorstep. It needs some massaging, and maybe some rework, but the Idea is there. The seat pan isnt on all the way, so no crooked comments! LOL

I'm down to Battery Box, wiring harness, Petcock, and headlight mount to get it up and running....

I did buy a small rectifier from digikey (similar to oregonmotor), so just a ballistic battery + Small rectifier + stock voltage regulator and I'm set. Anyone have a good small battery box solution they have used? any ideas?

Trying to keep it pretty sleek....

Firstly, aren't you glad you have a 350 and not a 500 or larger.. would be a little tougher to lift it into that Honda. Bikes coming along now. Dont hate on your welds. When I first started, my welds looked like "bird shit"; as my instructor called it...

"We put a brand new crated up 612 V12 engine in that thing once, lol." << OH. MY. GOD.. hahahhahah!!
