Re: Nixon - '72 CL450

I dont have the thing mounted yet. I just threw the thing on there to see how it looked etc etc. The project is at my old house, which is now my dads house (don't ask) so I haven't seen it in about a week but I do remember that my trees were tapping the tank when turned all the way (I have a GL1000 front end on there) so I might have pulled the tank back a wee bit for clearance or make some dents for the bars... not sure but again, I haven't done any real work.

The rear mount does need some work to get it mounted but I will be sure to post how I did it when it gets done.

Thanks on the compliment!

I won't be as big as CCRider's tank! I am looking for a bigger tank as I got horrible range on my old tiny CL450 tank.
Big tanks Rule!!! I only had to fill up once last summer, ha ha.

The mock-up looks great. I like the size and shape for the bike.

Re: Nixon - '72 CL450

Awesome! I won the tank. Here's hoping it isn't too rusty to use how I want to, and that there isn't any bondo hiding under that paint.

I bought a tank for my VF700 off of a craigslist ad from a guy in Sacramento. In the picture there were a bunch of little blisters in the paint. I figured it was just a shitty paint job. When I got the tank, I sliced off one of the blisters with a razor blade and instantly got that sickening smell of rotten fuel. Under every blister was a pinhole (or bigger). Must have been 200 of them. I ended up glassing over the whole tank and treating with POR 15.

Good Luck, CC

Re: Nixon - '72 CL450

That sucks. From the looks of the pics it was sitting out in a salvage yard (rust on the front lower corners). The pic of the inside didn't look bad at all. We will see. I will prob be cutting it open to weld in some knee dents so I will be able to look inside.

Re: Nixon - '72 CL450

No, it hasn't arrived yet. Must still be in the back of a postal truck somewhere in Kentucky or something. I'm about to buy a petcock for it.

Re: Nixon - '72 CL450

I didn't see those but I have my eye on a used one that ends in a couple hours with no bids for 10 clams.

Re: Nixon - '72 CL450

Gotta keep watching for those deals! Cool, I won the petcock for only $10. Now I think the only things left to buy for this build are a front fender and possibly a front brake cable. Guess I better get working.

Re: Nixon - '72 CL450

Yea I didn't inpeed on you style... Congrats. I lost the tank cap (drat) but at least I made the guy pay $23!

Re: Nixon - '72 CL450

What kind of cap are you looking for? If you need the one from my tank you can have it. I've got other plans.

Re: Nixon - '72 CL450

The 750f tank showed up so I threw it on the bike to see what it looked like. I think this is going to be the one. It is going to take some work though. I am going to have to modify the rear attachment so that it sits down over the frame rails and is level. I'm not sure what I am going to do about the front. Right now the triple tree hits the front edge when it is hard over. I may just limit the travel on the tree. We'll see. I don't really want to drop the tank any lower because I think it will hit the motor.

My next step is to finish up the rear wheel so I have a roller again and I can take the whole thing over to my Dad's friend's place so he can do the welding. He is going to need to have the bike there to make sure the tank is level when he is modifying the bracket. He will also be fabbing the seat for me and doing the other frame mods so it will need to be there anyway.
