Wow that looks nice. Changes the look of the girl a good bit. Seat?

The seat will look kind of like Delores' rear end except the profile from the back will be roundish instead of squarish and it will be welded aluminum sheet. I'm going the design it so that the proportions and angles fit the tank.

Re: Nixon - '72 CL450

Finished cleaning up the rear wheel and got the clear coat put on the spokes, hub and the brake plate. Gotta wait for the clear to cure and then I'll tape it up to spray the black.

Re: Nixon - '72 CL450

Thanks. Should end up looking like the front wheel.

I'm very happy with how it is turning out. Because of my work/family schedule, I never get to paint the brushed parts right after I finish putting the brushed finish on. So while they sit, they get a slight oxidation which gives them a nice weathered yet clean look when they are done. Exactly what I was going for. It looks old, but clean and cared for. I'll call it "aged". :)

Re: Nixon - '72 CL450

No, the hub and the spokes are bare metal, "brushed" with 320 grit sandpaper and scothbrite pads with a glossy clearcoat over them. It doesn't show up real well in pictures.

Can kind of see it here. This is before I put the clear on.

I bought some clip-ons for my cl450 and I was told that the fork size is 35mm. Ater I got the clip-on's they didn't fit and when I measured the forks, they were 33mm.... Would you be able to check your fork size? I am soooooo curious now.. Soon, I'll bump my cl450 build thread up..

Keep up the BEAUTIFUL work. I hope mine has nice progress like yours.

I got some 35mm clipons from DCC. I haven't put them on yet, but I slipped them on the part of the forks I had sticking up through the top tree and they seemed to fit fine. What year is your CL? I think the earlier CLs had different forks. Mine, a '72 K5, has the same forks as a CB.

Nice Progress!?!?!? Did you notice the start of this build thread was July.......2009? I'm in a race to have the slowest build on here, next to Mysta2's 69. :) (Sorry Kit, just trying to motivate ya)

Re: Nixon - '72 CL450

I have a 71 according to my title... a 70 according to the Vin number.. lol. So. I guess we'll see. Thanks.. I'll keep watching this thread!

Yeah, it looks like you have the older forks that you can't push up through the trees (See fiche pic for a K3 below). I don't know what size they are, but I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't 35mm. Probably smaller because they have the extra external spring. You can get clipons on other sizes.

Hey Thanks!

After I saw that diagram I opened up the Clymers Manual and started actually reading... I'm a bad reader..YES you are right. 33mm on early models!

Thanks so much!

Re: Nixon - '72 CL450

Just trying out a new way of uploading pics.

Yeah, I realize painting the carbs probably wasn't the smartest thing to do, but I did it before I really thought it through. Worst that happens it I have to take them off and strip them, which will be pretty easy.

Re: Nixon - '72 CL450

Back on two wheels and ready to roll over to the welder's house.

Next on the agenda:
Tank mods
Ignition switch relocation
New Coils/Condesor Bracket

Re: Nixon - '72 CL450 - Tank Being Fabbed

Finally some stuff is getting done. Had the new coils/condensor bracket made. Modified the gauge bracket to hold the ignition switch. We started cutting up the cb750F tank I got and realized it would not sit on the frame correctly because the tunnel isn't wide enough. So we decided to make a new tank from scratch. Should be an adventure. The guy that is doing the welding for me does a lot of hot rod work and is good at forming/welding aluminum. I drew up a bunch of sketches and copied some pics of tanks I like. Hopefully it will turn out as I have envisioned it in my head.

Re: Nixon - '72 CL450 - New Tank/Seat Design

So my friend building the tank and seat for me couldn't quite figure out what I was going for with the design. I had given him some sketches and pictures of similar tanks but that wasn't enough. He is more of an old school hot rod guy so he was making it look more like a peanut tank than I wanted. So, he asked me to make a wooden buck for him to form the tank on so I could make it exactly like I wanted (since I can't do the welding/metal forming part).

I started working on the patterns to cut the wood out with when it dawned on me. I have the software and the capability to design aircraft parts, this should be no problem. So I modeled the tank and seat up in CATIA. This is my design as it stands now. I am going to use the model to cut out the wooden buck. I am also going to use it to flatten out the surfaces to make flat patterns for the welder to cut out to form around the buck. Hopefully it turns out as planned.

Re: Nixon - '72 CL450

Coolio! You may not be able to weld but you got the design skills for sure.

Re: Nixon - '72 CL450

Thanks guys. After staring at it for awhile, it seems a bit too tall for me. I might shorten it up from 9" tall to 8". But that makes the seat hump shorter and keeps me from using the taillight I wanted. Hmmmmmmm
