Re: Not only my first project bike, but my first bike period!

It all sounds good boom. keep me posted on you engine build.

Re: Not only my first project bike, but my first bike period!

santa came early this year!

he brought me a nice thinsulate lined leather jacket (43$ shipped off ebay!!!), some carb rebuild kits, a few frame clamps to help secure the ducati derived rear sets Im fabricating, and best of all some tarozzi lowrises!

Re: Not only my first project bike, but my first bike period!

You have to love those days when a bunch of parts show up!! I know I do ha ha...

Re: Not only my first project bike, but my first bike period!

Christmas indeed. Looks like enough stuff to keep you busy for awhile. Have you done any blasting yet?

nah, the guy couldnt find the mask, and last I heard they had ordered a new one, but havent heard anything since. So now Im trying to figure out how to proceed. Ive looked into buying a compressor and trying the baking soda blaster thing, but that would cost me at least 300$ and for under that I could pay to have them powder coated (including blasting).. But in all honesty, I dont have a ton of funds after this last buying spree (so easy to just type in your CC and not think about it!) So I think Im gonna spend today with wire brushes and the wire wheel and see if I can get the engine clean the low tech way. That being said... if anyone has any advice on how to clean the cylinders and other engine parts that have fins, Im all ears!

I'm in the same boat, looking to clean/polish as best I can for minimal funds. I bought that Mother's polishing ball thing lol (goes on your drill), I'm going to try that with dish detergent on the fins first followed by that with mother's metal polish. I'll let you know. I've had good success so far on the side covers by wet sanding with 400-600-800-1500 and then finishing with mother's polish on my orbital buffer.

Re: Not only my first project bike, but my first bike period!

ya, I mean I dont even really care to polish the hell out of anything... the chrome look isnt for me tbh. But my cylinders have all this crud and oxidation on them and its so damn hard to get in those fins! I did talk to my boy who moved out to NY, he said his dad might have an old compressor that just needs some tinkering. Then I could get a cheap gravity feed sandblasting gun...

Right now Im rapping a paint stirrer in sand paper and using that to get in there... its insanely tedious though and its still hard to get into some of the little corners..

Re: Not only my first project bike, but my first bike period!

I'm with you on the sandblasting. I started to clean in between the fins on my bike and gave up pretty quickly. Those bucket blasters go pretty cheap so I'll probably go that route too.

Re: Not only my first project bike, but my first bike period!

It looks like the art guys are going to come through with the sand blasting after all. I talked to the guy and we made loose plans to do some blasting when I get back from cali, the first weekend of april.

I have been sitting on these carb rebuild kits for a while now, so I decided to brew up some boiling lemon juice and have a go at carb rebuilding. The lemon juice seemed to work quite well, but my mom wasnt too happy about the smell, lol. So ya, next time Ill do this on the grill or something. Bad news is that the carb rebuild kits i got from oldbikebarn are not correct. They say 68-73(74?) but apparently the carbs on 68 and 69 are different. Everything works except the bowl gasket is too big. I ordered a full rubber kit (x2) off ebay that specified my carbs and even showed a picture of the correct carb.

I finished tearing down the bike, the frame is bare and is ready for the grinder.

Ive decided that I really want to get a mig/flux setup so that I can really customize this project. My friend who is a Welding Supervisor with a large manufacturer here in chicago is going to come by tomorrow and let me know what to look for and what to avoid. In the plans are a faux tank extension to hide either the batter or electronics, and possibly a steel cowl. Ill also be able to weld off all the mounting holes for the battery box, and tool box thing. Also this opens up the possibility of custom fabbed brackets for the rear sets instead of using the passenger peg mounts. Oh, and Ill definitely be trying my hand at my own custom exhaust. 8)

Re: Not only my first project bike, but my first bike period!

That all sounds good boom. I'll keep notes on those rear set mounts, Im thinking of do the same. Going off Mysta2 advise and trying to place them further forward.

Re: Not only my first project bike, but my first bike period!

it's been a long time since I updated last, but Im still making progress... slowly.. I decided to just send the whole top end to a machine shop to get bead blasted and hot tanked. They also measured the cylinders and they are out of spec. I got in the .25 over piston kit from ebay yesterday. I only paid 70$ and it included pistons pins clips and rings! Hopefully this sunday Ill get to the grinding tabs off the frame, and generic way to mount the seat (that I will be making sometime in the future.) Then the frame and swing arm is off to powder.

Ive got about 5 weeks until I leave for thailand, and I desperately want to at least go for a test run before then..

Re: Not only my first project bike, but my first bike period!

everyone likes pictures right?

went wild with the angle grinder on the frame. Gonna sand it a bit then send it out to powder.

I didnt make too many mistakes ;D and after sanding I think powder will hide any unevenness that is left.

Heres my forks tore down and ready to soak in some solvent. Speaking of which, what solvent should I be using? Mineral spirits?

oh and my 70$ .25 over piston kit. I <3 ebay.

Re: Not only my first project bike, but my first bike period!

powder will not hide any uneven surfaces bud... it is just like paint how it lays only tuffer, i woudl bank that the media blastin would do good to hide alot of that... if you are worried about it have your coater shoot a coat of KL primer over the frame first... that will fill in any spots or areas that "need help" then your top coat of powder will be smoooooth as glass!

Re: Not only my first project bike, but my first bike period!

I mean, ya, I was just saying that in passing. Im not really worried about it. Its not a show bike. I think it will look fine, but I will ask about the primer.

well actually, do you by chance have time in the next week or two to coat a frame swing arm center stand and triple trees? Id really like to get it done within the next week or two so that I can start mocking things up, but Id also like to give you my business over some shop that Ive never worked with.

Re: Not only my first project bike, but my first bike period!

ya man not a problem... PM me and i can call you

Re: Not only my first project bike, but my first bike period!

417-425-9406... anytime around 9 is fine man... i dont sleep

Re: Not only my first project bike, but my first bike period!

Ive started building my seat out of florist foam, and it made me realize that I need to slow down a bit. I just wanted to ride before going to thailand, but now I realize that I shouldnt rush so much. Im going to fab up and have a friend weld in some mounting points for the seat/battery/ect. before going to powder. So now the plan is to get that done as well as the seat before I leave for thailand on the 17th. So the plan is to have the frame out to powder before I leave. That way I can get home and pretty much be ready to reassemble and wire her up :)

I'll be posting pics of the seat build here as it progresses.
