(Not really) The slowest project ever - CM400T

Re: Slowest project ever - CM400T - Paint and stuff, updates - P2

That tail section is almost exactly like I want to do to my KZ! I love it with the chopped up stock seat and the raised back rails and tall shocks. Killer work so far keep posting updates because I need to see more of this awesome bike!

And the gauge will go great with this build. I would guess you don't see many on cafe builds because its not really in keeping with the time period but you see a lot of stripped fighter type builds that use various Acewell gauges.

I really like the gauge, def a option for my cm400 project. Lmk how easy the wiring for it is!!

Bike looks great!!

Some updates:

Spent the day getting the brake caliper cleaned/painted/functional.
Then cleaned up all the electrical stuff in the hand controls - ended up painting them as well, but I'm not expecting the paint to last since my hands will be on the levers all the time. Eventually I'll just buy new levers.

I also got the speedo mounted. Worked out great.

Then I focused on the headlight bucket. I didn't really want to order that aftermaket headlight mount because I'm not a fan of the way it looks and mounts. I used stock mounts and angled them down...

Here's how it came out:

I thought it pushed the headlight out too far and didn't look good, and after I mounted the outer ring (on the headlight bucket) it looked even dumber.

Then I decided to see what it will look like if it sits higher and more in.

Another pic with the fender mock-up, I may have cut it a bit too short at the back...:

More stuff to put on this weekend:

Should I modify my existing bracket, flip it up and re-drill the whole to mount the headlight? Or should I go for an aftermaket one - if so, which one?

Perhaps I should consider different lighting all together? Dual headlamps 2.5" each?

Looks like I'll be done soon! I hope to take her out for a ride in 2 weeks time.

Re: Slowest project ever - CM400T - Stupid headlight - new pics, advice needed - P2

I've got to be honest I actually really dig the sock headlamp location with the matte ring. It gives it a more modern stretched out racer look. Also the fender looks great!

Re: Slowest project ever - CM400T - Stupid headlight - new pics, advice needed - P2

Lookin really badass! How many cables does the gauge use? One to the engine and one to the front wheel, same as stock?

Are you using one of those expensive flasher units for your LED lights? Don't they flash too quickly or something without one?

Re: Slowest project ever - CM400T - Stupid headlight - new pics, advice needed - P2

I really like the stock headlight as well. I wouldn't change a thing about it. Where did you mount your speedo to?

I agree 100%.

Re: Slowest project ever - CM400T - Stupid headlight - new pics, advice needed - P2

I like the stock light and location quite a bit as well, but I also think 2 smaller lights would look pretty bad ass. Guess we'd have to see a mock up. It's really shaping up. Love it.

Re: Slowest project ever - CM400T - Stupid headlight - new pics, advice needed - P2

I realy like the idea of 2 headlights. BMW has some cool examples in there current bikes

Re: Slowest project ever - CM400T - Stupid headlight - new pics, advice needed - P2

looks like thingsw are coming along. im going to be the one to throw the wrench in everything. i like the mock up of the headlight tucked in. if you can just drill new mounting holes and cut off the rest of the mount that will be too far forward. i thought about two headlights as well, but after looking at all of the vintage bike builds i think it would look a little odd. either way youre doing good work

Re: Slowest project ever - CM400T - Stupid headlight - new pics, advice needed - P2

Great work! I was skeptical at first (with what you started with) but it looks great! I like the headlight pushed back. Mysta2 fabs brackets that would look great. Check out Kit's stuff at http://www.dropbars.com/store.html

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions guys, hearing your opinions helps me make up my mind since this is my first bike.

The gauge uses a bunch of cables, I counted 6 in the clip and 1 for the speedo. Here's a wiring diagram for your reference:

Because there are turn signals, headlight on led, oil sensor, etc there are a few things that will need to be wired in.

I was told that LEDs tend to hyperflash. The guy at the store suggested I put in two of those units - they are 25$ each and his explanation was that LEDs don't like 12 volts. If that's the case I'll just buy a resistor at active electronics at Vic Park and hwy7 for $2 bucks and solder it in. My dad is genious when it comes to electronics, so I'll figure it out. Once I do, i'll post it up for everyone's reference.

I haven't pained the bucket or the ring yet. I think I might actually go silver bucket and matte black ring, we'll see how that comes out. Glad you think the fender is okay, it's starting to bother me.

I mounted the speedo using a simple bracket out of a sheet metal to the 2 front holes (you can see giant nuts I put on the top side just for decoration in previous pics) Here are some pics of the bracket for your reference:

*note: I changed these images from earlier so you can clearly see how it was done.

For your reference guys, the location of the headlight I used is not stock, normally the bracket is flipped up instead of down and the headlight sits a lot higher on the bike.

I think I'll try that after I try modifying the bracket more and it doesn't work out.

Thanks dcmspikes, that's what i'm planning to do today, flip the bracket up, drill the holes in more and cut off the rest. My buddy is out of town so I don't have access to a welder until the weekend - probably a good thing since I'm doing my CA exams today and tomorrow... gah

Wow, those are fantastic looking! I think I'll get those for next season, have to get my bike running first.

Okay, i'll go break the bike some more. I'll post a few pics when i'm done.

Re: Slowest project ever - CM400T - Thanks for the input! Will try a few things now.

Updates:

I chopped up the brackets, and I could not be any happier with the way they came out.

I think we should have a competition on removing the front end from the motorcycle. I've done it so many times already I can probably do it with my eyes closed ;D

I also mounted the turn signals and test fitted the headlight - the ring that holds the light in is not painted yet. Previous owner painted it silver and the colour currently does not match.

I apologize if I keep taking pictures of the same things, but I think I fell in love with my bike. After I was done I spent 15 minutes just sitting on it, it's so comfortable that I didn't want to get off. :)

Re: Slowest project ever - CM400T - Headlight bracket finished = pimp shizzle

Wow, that bike looks sexy man!

Re: Slowest project ever - CM400T - Headlight bracket finished = pimp shizzle

For your indicators you can get a "no load" flasher relay specifically for LED's. Normal relays require the load of the incandescant bulbs to trigger them, and the small load of the LED's will often not make them work.

Here's one in Oz:

http://www.ledshoponline.com/electronic_flasher_cans.htm

Oh - BTW that Acewell looks great on there ;)

Re: Slowest project ever - CM400T - Headlight bracket finished = pimp shizzle

I take it back that looks perfect...

Re: Slowest project ever - CM400T - Headlight bracket finished = pimp shizzle

oh snap. that looks great. that is exactly what i want on mine. nice tucked in light and almost invisible gauge. nice work.

Re: Slowest project ever - CM400T - Headlight bracket finished = pimp shizzle

Another option for the flashers is to buy an electronic flasher module. Mine i got at adavnce auto parts and cost me like 12 bucks. There was even one that you could adjust the flasher rate. DEF an easier option in my opinion and it works like a charm on my leds

Re: Slowest project ever - CM400T - rear sets? Yep!

Thanks for the suggestions for LED, i'll just put a solid state relay in and it should do the job.

Anyway, some updates.

I wrapped the exhaust with the wrap, but it turned out that the gaskets I received were wrong size, so I couldn't assemble the rest of it. It looks very good though.

Then I received my tarozzi rearsets. I have to say, I'm not very happy with them. I assumed that they would have a ball bearing, but there was none. The fitment is not perfect, so for next year I think I'll make my own and sell these.

I fabricated a bracket for it. The stainless steel is pretty thick (not sure what gauge it is), i bent the two sides as best as I could in order to make them stiffer. The only flex there is now is in the points where it's bolted to the frame... I haven't polished anything yet, will do that next weekend.

The only parts I need to order now are:
Battery - the one I can put on the side (gel type?)
Mirrors - Need mirrors with bar ends (I like to hold them while I hold the accelerator, because it's easier to hold the same position)

Any suggestions for the above 2 items?
