(Not really) The slowest project ever - CM400T

Re: Slowest project ever - CM400T - rear sets? Yep!

You may want to reconsider your rearset brackets as it looks like they'll flex. They may not when messing about in the shop but I'd bet that on the road you'll notice it. As well, and I mean no disrespect...but they're a bit kludged in comparison to the rest of the bike. Why no use the OE bracket that they are bolted to? It'd be pretty clean looking and while not as far back, the pegs would be in a better place for ground clearance in corners.

As for the lack of a ball bearing, I can't think of any that have them as a factory feature. Oil'm up and rawk'm!

Offense will never be taken and all opinions are welcome. I don't really know what I'm doing as this is the first time building a motorcycle. The brackets will not flex because of the rib i put in on both sides, however they are a complete eye-sore and I will definitely try to put them into stock location when i get to see the bike again (next weekend). The reason why I didn't use the stock holes initially is because I tried different options for seating positions and for some reason decided that I don't like how my feet felt in that location. I will give it another try though, maybe with proper rear-sets it will feel better.

I ordered the mirrors and battery yesterday, should be here early next week. Last thing that I need to order is the air filters - which I'll probably just pick up at a local shop - so now that I don't need any more major parts, I'm on the final stretch. I am off work starting next week until mid-september (writing UFE - CA exams...), so I will try my best to finish the bike next week :)

Really nice bike, I'm loving this build, It's like a 80's street fighter.

Got some new photos, I used my sisters Nikon D300 and i have no clue how to use it, the ISO was way to high and I apologize for the blurriness.

The bike has been giving me non-stop problems. I got SS brake line for the front, installed it and it turned out that the bleeder screw on the caliper had healy coil and the threads are completely stripped. To top it off, the master cylinder seals were gone. New front brake with master is coming in tomorrow and I have to re-tap to a larger bleeder screw still.

I decided to stay with the mounts I made, but I did try another alternative i could come up with. Wasted a day making new rear-set mounts, they were nicely hidden behind the silver plate, but flexed wayy to much. I decided not to waste any more time on it, since these ones work and simply painted them black. The mounts don't flex unless I'm jumping on them. Shifter linkage works great, rear brake is garbage... I'm very unhappy with it and i'm afraid that I'll die if I actually ride the bike with a mechanical brake like that. I have to come up with a better system or somehow switch it to a hydraulic system.

Today I started working on the wiring, labeled all the wires and figured out where everything goes again. Then I decided to make a pan that will hide all the wiring under the seat.

More to come tomorrow...

Re: Slowest project ever - CM400T - Foot controls done. Well, almost. Wiring next.

Pavel, your rear brake doesn't work because your pull ratio is 3:1, I bet you're damn near pushing the pedal 180 degree's or more.

You need to make the arm on the drum the same length as the arm on the rearset.

Actually I made the turn ratio less about .75 : 1 now and I only have the push the brake pedal a bit to get friction. Don't get me wrong, the pedal is firm, it's just that i don't think i can ever lock it up.

Re: Slowest project ever - CM400T - Foot controls done. Well, almost. Wiring next.

i see now, hard to see in your new picture. Do you have the arm facing up or down?

it should be parallel to the joining arm.

Re: Slowest project ever - CM400T - Foot controls done. Well, almost. Wiring next.

Hey guys, I got tons of things done... Took pictures when it was getting a bit dark last night, but in any case, here are some of the updates:

1. Grips are on
2. Mirrors are on - They are Ken Sean bar-end mirrors. I really like the quality
3. Wiring is DONE! (except for solid state relays for the turn signals, will do that tomorrow) I haven't hooked up the battery yet or tried to start it. In the pictures below the wiring looks like a mess, but it's only wires on top of bolted down stuff...
4. I'm an idiot and I have to make a complete custom exhaust now since I placed the rear-sets in a place that doesn't clear the exhaust (Grrr)
5. There is a picture of the speed sensor, I bolted it down to the caliper mount on the bottom, it worked out great. I still haven't set up the speedo because the battery wasn't hooked up yet.
6. Ignition key is relocated on the left side, under the gas tank
7. Rear brakes are garbage because I wanted to make them short through, I'll be solving that problem today... I'm posting pictures of how I have it set up as a WHAT NOT TO DO.

Enjoy the pics:

looking good pavel.
hopefully you can get it running soon

Looks good, like the clip-ons and rear sets, although I am not sure how that rear brake rod will work out, looks like if you hit a hole or bump the swing arm might engage the brake. Have you tested that? -MBS

The rear brake is garbage, i'm re-doing the whole thing. The rod flexes too much, there is no brake power at all. I put the picture up as a "how not to do it".

It's all a big learning curve for me since it's my first bike, hopefully people won't make the same mistake and waste a day fabricating...

No worries, we have our mistakes. I once bolted the exhaust muffler on a bike to the swing arm, forgetting that it moves. One broken muffler mount later I thought to myself DUH! Where was my brain that day? -MBS

Hey, what is that taillight out of? It's really close to what I'm looking for myself. Sweet looking build so far!

Thanks. The tail light is Princess Auto special ;D I got it at the newmarket store (assuming you're from Toronto). It was $15 with the holder I believe.

Re: Slowest project ever - CM400T - Wiring done, 2 days left till finished product

Updates:

I started shortening the cables. Was able to shorten choke successfully, however I messed up the gas cables. I need to make new cable ends, and Uniac was able to explain how to do it - I hope to get it done on the weekend.

The electrical system works, but there are 2 issues. Front turn signals aren't working, and the tail light is not on when the bike is on (brake light does work though). I also need to hook up the rear-brake sensor.
Lastly, I just need to make the blinker module for the LED turn signals.

Then I need to make exhaust tips, or I'm thinking of just welding up those 2 exit ports and make 1 large exhaust port from the center of the collector underneath the bike - Buell style.

I relocated the rear-sets, so I'm not using those ugly plates anymore. Rear-sets sit where passenger foot pegs used to be, that location is actually PERFECT for me. I completely changed the rear-brake linkage. I can now lock-up the rear wheel with minimal effort, which is exactly what I wanted. It's a bit big and ugly, but it works!

Special thanks to DIP for helping me out and taking pictures. He's only sent me 2 so far, but there will be more to come next weekend.

Here they are:

Here's the video of the first start - no throttle cables, only choke hooked up (i'm all confused and worries that it won't start up haha):

Re: Slowest project ever - CM400T - it's ALIVE (w/ video)

nice man! you do not need a choke... just give it 2 good full throttles, wait about 3 seconds and fire it up... choke is not good for an engine. i tell guys on the chops i build NEVER to use it unless it is winter!

Thanks for the heads up! I'll keep that in mind for next time.

Re: Slowest project ever - CM400T - it's ALIVE (w/ video)

Not sure how I missed this build. I too am going for a bit more of a modern looking tail. Its nice to see people doing something other than the classic hump :)

Looks great!!! Going kinda fast for the sidewalk though lol
