October 2013 XV750 Project ;)

Well I should be getting my manifold boots soon. That should help out with running of the bike, but I really need to check the compression in the heads. If they are low, that will suck hard.

Might need to buy a new engine. Although I know where to get one for $200 but who knows the condition.

Wish I had a Motor master come by and wave a magic torque wrench and get her running again.

Greetings everyone.

This is my first post. Wanted to say that I am enjoying the 'xv' build threads this one included!!! I see it takes a lot of patience and time... and cash. On top of all that you need know-how. Yikes.

Just going to pick up an '83 xv750 in Ottawa this coming weekend. $400 for complete bike minus tank and seat (neither of which I would use anyway).

Anyway.... keep up the work Uber as this has been an interesting read thus far!

Sorry Guys not much happening, as the winter has been crazy ass cold, and I got a new job and working all the time.

Ill be heading to Japan as well for a month from the 12th to 14 of april. I will see if there is any cool stuff I can pick up over there for the bike.

Ill talk to you more when I get back and hopefully it will be warmer as well!

Hey Uber,

I lived for 6 years in Japan. Great place to see bikes of any description. Enjoy the food. I totally miss it (I live in eastern Ontario now).

Well, well well.. Guess who`s Back.. Yes...

Good weather and some free time. FINALLY.

Been working on the bike.... Here is the lastest if any one is actually following this thread, or not.

Replaced the Carb/manifold intake gaskets, or whatever they are called. Got my rear wheel conversion kit, almost done.

I bought a new tire, Bridgestone Spitfire 30/90/16 white wall, but cant seem to find a white walled one for the front. ;(

Looking at welding the subframe together. Never welded before.... Oh boy! Should be interesting.

Ok so here is a couple questions. Where can I get a Spitfire tire for the front with white letters. I can get a black one but I want a matching set.

Next question. Muffler. Im looking for 2 to 1 exhaust. Any suggestions?

Thanks

BTW this bike still wont start.... Dam, its not wanting to come back to life. I wish I knew why...

;(

The Bike turns over, pops, and back fires when I use quick start, but it doesnt start.

Im thinking its electrical. But the bike gets gas, spark and air. Im missing something. I wish I knew more about engines. Maybe it compression. I need to test it.

Any suggestions?

Uber

If it's firing with starter fluid, your electrical system is less likely to be the problem than the fueling.

Have you cleaned the carbs and set float height? Also, it's really easy to put the floats in upside down on those carbs, which won't allow any gas in.

I just came back from a bike event. Talk to some peeps, they were saying to check the pick ups on the timing, and check the fuse box.

Its weird. I did a rebuild the floats and everything is fine. I have a feeling the gremlin is in the wiring or the pick ups.

Just where im not confident in. I dont like wiring as its not my bag. Although I guess I need to bare down, if I want this iron horse to be revived from the dead!

Also I need pipes....

I am now prepping the tank for paint as well. Ill blast a couple pictures up next to keep the forum rolling shortly.

Uber

Again, if it fires with ether, the problem isn't likely to be electrical. The pickups tend to fail once the bike is warm, and if it were a fuse the ether wouldn't make a difference.

Well, something very interesting happened, tonight!

Before I went to see the xmen the days of futures past...... Which I might add was amazing!

I bought a compression tester, I hooked it up to the front cylinder. I had my tank on yesterday, primed the bike, and got nothing but back fires. Today with the front cylinder not working... with no spark, I got a reading above 90 psi. 96 or something. But more than that.....

My bike started! It ran..... WOW! Unexpected!

Why? What is the reason for this mystery? ;) ....

I didnt check the other side yet, as I had to go see the xmen. So tomorrow I will try the rear cylinder compression. And also see if it starts up!
Very random and confusing.

But exciting, because the beast awoke! Very promising. So now I need to figure out why this anomaly has occurred!

Any ideas?

Uber

Where is the tester from? That's pretty low, but if it's a cheap gauge, I wouldn't be worried unless the other cylinder shows something much different.

Did you determine that you're not getting spark on the front cylinder or do you just mean that the plug wasn't in it?

The it started with the compression gauge in the front cylinder. The PSI is 100 actually. Ill do another test tomorrow but for now thats what I got.

There was no spark plug because the compression tester was screwed in the head.

Wasnt expecting anything. But it just started. Although it sounded like a lawn mower with only on side working.

Uber

Ha. With MAC pipes mine sounded like a mower with both cylinders ;)

While you have the front plug out, check to see if its getting fuel in the cylinder.

What should the optimum PSI be for the heads?

I will check if its getting fuel. But why would it start>>? That is the question! perhaps the other cylinder is preventing the bike form starting.

Hmm, very interesting, but at least there is a little progress. I wont be doing any thing tonight, but I will tomorrow.

Uber.

BTW what pipes are you running?, and do you have a link where I can find some for my bike. Thx

Uber

Ok well, unfortunatly I think I know the problem.

Compression Pressure (warm at sea level)
Standard 156 psi (11 kg/cm3)
Minimum 128 psi (9 kg/cm3)
Maximum 171 psi (12 kg/cm3)

Front cylinder is about 100ish
Rear Cylinder is about 130

the specs say it should be 14psi difference.
So it looks like I need to change the rings on the pistons.

That is very daunting. wondering if buying just another motor is the best way to go!

Any suggestions?

Uber

Check everything that could affect compression once more before you call the rings!!

Top-end rebuild on this engine is relatively simple, though. There are a couple of decent write ups on the Virago owners forum, though.

And I was running MAC 2-2 slash cut pipes, do not recommend them.
