It's a lot easier to read even if it doesn't look as "badass" or whatever to you. Speaking from the books I've read on typography and color choice, dark lettering on light background is quite a bit more legible than the opposite. That being said, sometimes I break the rule for a good look.

I think photos tend to look better against the lighter background as well. So far I'm happy - just tweaking some details. Hit CTRL-F5 on your Windows browsers every once in a while to force a reload of the cached graphics etc.
