Oh Lord (CB500) - The Leaky Bitch (p. 31)

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - So f--king fustrated!!! (top of pg.31)

Uh oh.... :-\ :-\

I've sealed my BCR tank with the Caswell stuff a couple of months ago. Haven't put fuel in the tank yet though. Hope you can get it sorted

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - So f--king fustrated!!! (top of pg.31)

Do Caswell have an answers as to what happened? I recently treated/coated an old GRP tank and haven't had fuel in it yet and now you have me worried.

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - So f--king fustrated!!! (top of pg.31)

I've used Caswells on metal tanks with very good results. I used it on my Tracy fibreglass tank but haven't had fuel in it. Hmmmm. Very disturbing to say the least!! :( :(

I'd be very curious to know what Caswells has to say about this too. :p

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - So f--king fustrated!!! (top of pg.31)

I used Caswell on Gretta's tank and have had zero problems. I didn't etch or otherwise to get adhesion. Had to have been a reaction of some sort with the resin or something similar. The tank i am using on her is a mid 80s ducati replica tank so nothing too fancy.

Mad science bitches!

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - So f--king fustrated!!! (top of pg.31)

Ya, it seems that it must have been some sort of reaction between the liner and the interior of the tank. This sounds like a probable "blame war" between Caswells and Benjies unless some one man's up and takes the hit. :-\

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - So f--king fustrated!!! (top of pg.31)

Probably cheap resin in BCR tank?
That could take up to 8~9 month to fully cure before you can liner it
Vinyl ester resins should be used by all tank manufacturers or epoxies at the least, not polyester general lay up (vinyl esters are about 2~3 times more expensive though)
Do you know what they used or is it 'proprietary' information?

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - So f--king fustrated!!! (top of pg.31)

I don't know what they use, but I got the tank April 2, 2011...

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - So f--king fustrated!!! (top of pg.31)

Plenty of cure time there then.
Did you leave liner longer second time? (although it seems like a bonding issue?)

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - So f--king fustrated!!! (top of pg.31)

Haven't tried it the second time yet. I'm not going to attempt recoating it until I can the pealing stuff out.

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - So f--king fustrated!!! (top of pg.31)

Try a cup of sand and really fine gravel (primary with sharp edges) and spin it around in a beton mixer for at least 2 hours. Wrap your tank into an old blanket and belt it carefully into the machine.
It worked well with heavy rust in tanks I used before, so if the whole tank seal is porous like the one on the pic it might work.

I think it could be the cheap alternative to a cleaning treatment by some shops. ;)

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - So f--king fustrated!!! (top of pg.31)

Oette has the right idea - it sound like the interior of the tank has some type of surface that is preventing the sealer from adhering.
If the tank is made with polyester resin the last coat on the inside could be styrene monomer to help surface cure - this might cause difficulties.

If you use dry-wall screws or something similar and tumble the tank it will help give a key for the sealer, a wash out with some acetone wouldn't hurt either.
You shouldn't need to get all the previous coat of sealer out, once the loose stuff is removed after the tumbling another coat of sealer should help bind everything together.

Good luck,

Crazy

Man, I know this shit can be a pain in the ass. Want me to come down and we'll take turns shaking the sand and gravel around in the tank? My bike is down too so we can drink beer and console each other over the cruelty of the two wheeled gods.

HAHAHA Sounds like a good plan. Now just to find time off of work to do it! I've got a fridge stocked full of PBR just waiting to help us lament over the issues with the bikes.

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - So f--king fustrated!!! (top of pg.31)

Well, I'll be out of town Monday-Thursday of next week but anytime after that.

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - So f--king fustrated!!! (top of pg.31)

give me a call. my bike is down too.

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - So f--king fustrated!!! (top of pg.31)

I've been doing some research on my issue, and it's not looking promising. :( I've narrowed it down to two options, and I'm waiting for one of those options to contact me back.

1. Option 1 is to have a shop that shall go un-named for now recreate the tank using better fiberglassing methods. This shop will also seal the interior of the tank properly. This shop is very experienced in fiberglass gas tanks and fiberglass in general. They believe the interior of my gas tank to be not salvagable. I'm looking at about $350 for this.

2. I'm still waiting to hear back about option 2. I've reached out to a local fiberglass fabricator who specializes in composites for motorsports. I've presented them with the issue and I'd like to see if they can work it out for an affordable price, if its even possible.

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - Tank Progress!!! (top of pg.32)

So I sent my damaged tank off to Lengendary Motorcycles in Florida after speaking with Dave there. Some of you might remember that I sealed the tank, but the sealer blistered. One thing Dave seemed to think was that my tank was way too heavy. I certainly agreed, the tank was VERY heavy. It seems there was a lot of bondo used in its construction. The inside of the tank is also very rough in texture. One Thing Dave said he could do is make the inside of the tank nicer, and seal it properly. He apparently took a 3D scan of the tank, and then CNCed the shape out of foam. He the epoxied it in preperation to make a mold of it. He sent me a pic of the foam mold after its first coat of epoxy. I am getting excited to get the finished tank in my hands.

I've looked at Legendary Motorcycles stuff on the internet and even exchanged a few emails with them before. If I were going to buy a tank I think it would be from them. I hope it won't take them too long to get you up and running.

Coming to Barber?

At this point, I don't know if I will make Barber. I am pretty sure the bike will be up and running by then, but I don't know if I will be ready by then. Since I went to the basic rider's course, I've only ridden three times. I just don't know how I feel about a long ride on my bike at this point. Might change after I put it through a shakedown ride. I could always trailer it there, but I wouldn't be able to respect myself if I did that! LOL

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - Tank Progress!!! (top of pg.32)

Hell man, I am flying down in an Aerioplane. Don't feel bad about trailering it.
