Oh Lord (CB500) - The Leaky Bitch (p. 31)

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - Is this noise normal? (pg. 39)

I'm going to pull the oil pump as soon as the parts suppliers get me the gaskets and hope that the oil I am seeing is actually coming from the oil pump and not something else. I am afraid that it might be coming frmo teh shift selector rod thingy. I just want to ride!!!! :(

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - Is this noise normal? (pg. 39)

Careful of oil light in with lots of oil, I was having that issue because of a plugged main jet and running lean on one side, the light was coming on because the bike was hot and oil was too thin, I would stop, check oil, bike would cool I would then ride, same thing, around town was not enough to hurt anything, but I went on the highway and boom, crunch piston bits all through the motor.

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - Is this noise normal? (pg. 39)

I first replaced the oil pressure sensor, and the light went out. Today, I set out to change the five gaskets accociated with the oil pump. What a pain in ass! It took me three hours and a smashed thumb to get the three bolts out that hold the oil pump on the bike! My impact driver took a hell of a beating and the bit I was using twisted pretty badly. I had to replace the three bolts because the heads got beat up so badly. I also wasn't able to open the cover on the I'll pump or undo the bolt over the pressure valve, so those gaskets couldn't be changed. What a huge pain in the ass this little project proved to be. My thumb hurts sooooooooooo damn bad still. The quick ride around the block felt like a victory lap. Hope this solved the oil leak and the bike is able to maintain oil pressure after it warms up.

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - Velocity Stack Filter Covers (pg 41)

My bike didn't come with an airbox, not that I was planning on using one in the first place. From the get-go, I planned on ditching the air box and running pod filters or velocity stacks, so I de-tabbed the frame. I ended up running velocity stacks from Dime City Cycles, but I became concerned about kicking grit off the road into the carbs, so I started poking around on Google for a possible solution. After Googling Velocity Stack Filter, I cam eup with PJ Motorsports: http://pjmotorsports.com/.

They aren't cheap, but I ordered four of their velocuty stack filters for my 2.5" velocity stacks. Sarra from PJ Motorsports was pretty nice and helpful. This is what came in the mail:

They look to be made of three different sizes fo screen layed in a pattern that wont let junk though.

They came with some "filter lube," but I didn't need to use it. They pressed on pretty easy:

They don't detract from the look of the bike at all in my opinion.

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - Velocity Stack Filter Covers (pg 41)

You just restricted your velocity stacks to equivalent of about 3/4"~1" diameter pipe plus messed up the smooth curve that used to be entry

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - Velocity Stack Filter Covers (pg 41)

+1!
Looks are one thing, performance another. Air filters are the easiest thing to get wrong on a cafe build (in strong competition with tyres, suspension, ......).

Crazy

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - Velocity Stack Filter Covers (pg 41)

Ouch! Well that doesn't sound to good. I haven't had a chance to ride yet with these on, so I don't know how they will effect the power curve on this thing. Before I put these on, I had a bit of a dead spot at low revs/low speeds in first and second that went away with a healthy application of throttle. If I loose a little power in exchange for a little piece of mind (not getting junk kicked into the carbs), I think I'll be ok with that. I'll report back with what I end up with.

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - Velocity Stack Filter Covers (pg 41)

Took the bike out for a quickie after work today, and didn't feel any difference with the velocity stack covers on. The bike has always bogged a little in the lower gears at low rpm, but it seems to get better as the bike warms up.

I feel really comfortable on this thing on my short rides, I just need to build some confidence in the bike. I'm afraid to take it on the interstate for fear the motor might blow, and I don't want to get too far from home and end up stranded because it broke down...

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - Velocity Stack Filter Covers (pg 41)

I forget now, did you do any engine work to this thing? I mean, is there a reason the engine might blow up?

ummm yeah , it's 40 years old

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - Velocity Stack Filter Covers (pg 41)

pretty much, thats why I'm afraid of blowing it. I was told the top end had been rebuilt. I have no clue if that is true or not. I am not a motor guru, nor do I posess the proper tools.

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - Velocity Stack Filter Covers (pg 41)

oh yeah, and I'm afraid that changing the oil pump seals didn't do the job and its still leaking from under the clutch adjuster cover. I ran the bike last night for a couple of minutes, and then after I shut it down, I put a cleam paper towl down. This morning when I left for work there was a fresh drip of oil on the paper towl.

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - Clutch/Transmission Issues???? (Pg. 28)

So I ventured out on a longer ride this past Sunday, dodging bad weather. I was lucky to see some sunshine and dry roads, and I had been itching to ride!

The ride went very well. The bike felt very responsive after it warmed up. It handled well also. It was all-in-all shaping up to be a good, although short (25 minutes) ride.

I was about a mile from my house when I got caught at a long red light. As I was sitting there, I left the bike in 1st gear, waiting to make my left turn. The longer I sat there though, the more my clutch was engaging. At first, with the clutch lever depressed, the clutch was fully disengaged. I could feel the bike start to pull though after a couple of minutes, and thinking that didn't feel right, I tried to put it in neutral. I couldn't get it out of gear for anything, but I was able to get it into second. I kicked it back down into 1st, the bike kept trying to pull out into the intersection, and I was having to give it a little gas to keep it from stalling, but obviously I didn't want to be giving it power to make me pull out against the red light and get tagged by a car.

So It all came to a point were the bike just had to stall. Of course, thats exactly when the light turned green from me to turn, and I was first in line. It wouldn't start, so I started crawling it through the intersection with my legs while hammering the starter button. About 3/4 of the way around the intersection, it caught, and I was able to drive off. At first, it was stuck in 1st gear, but after trying a couple of times, I was able to get it to row through the gears correctly.

I got it home and into my garage where it stalled in the parking chock and I couldn't get it started again until about an on and off hour of trying to kick start it. When I hit the starter, it would just click. After I eventually got it kick started, after that, it would start up off the starter fine.

So, what is going on with the clutch engaging like that? It was happening ever so slowly, so I am thinking its not a clutch lever adjustment issue, but what do I know? The clutch has been very hard too, by the way. Why am I having starting issues? My starting issues seem to happen every time I take the bike out (ussually 20 to 25 minute rides). I'm still new to riding, and I still stall. And every time, I have and issue getting the bike going again.

a drop of oil wont kill anything. Just ride the sucker! Every once in a while, check the oil level and you'll be ok!

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - Clutch/Transmission Issues???? (Pg. 28)

I disagree about the oil leak.
It may be because of something more serious.
Gear change shouldn't 'hang up or stick, check the 'uprights' on motor and lever are parallel, the further 'off' they are the more difficult it gets to change in one direction or the other
500 transmission isn't bad but it can have some issues, that's why Honda re-designed it for 550 with a dedicated transmission oil pump
There is oil pressure behind the clutch push rod seal, that is most common area to leak
Oil pump has a 'housing' over it built into sprocket cover so should be pretty clean, if oil is black it's probably coming off drive chain
As for clutch issue, you have stock Honda plates with heavy duty springs?
They do tend to heat up and drag a bit, I always stop in neutral and keep an eye on the mirrors, easier to jump off bike and run than have the problem your describing (which sounds like bad adjustment plus wrong oil?)

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - Clutch/Transmission Issues???? (Pg. 28)

Well, it looks as if the oil is no longer leaking, its been about two weeks. When I changed the pump gasket, I drained the oil from the bike.

I originally had Castro for bikes (whatever weight my old Honda service manual says to use) in the bike, and when I changed the pump gasket, my dumb ass followed the directions in the Honda service manual, a I drained the oil out. It probably only had 25 miles on that oil and it drained from the pan looking new.

When I refilled the oil, I used Honda lube of the same weight, I think it was synthetic though. The guy behind he counter said it'd be OK...

My clutch is stock and original.

What are the uprights on the shifter?

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - Clutch/Transmission Issues???? (Pg. 28)

i NEVER use synthetic on wet cluch, causes it to slip... i am a big fan of rotella in vintage bikes...

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - Clutch/Transmission Issues???? (Pg. 28)

Ha! I'm having the opposite problem of a slipping clutch! A clutch that likes to positively engage. Lol

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - Oil Vapor???? (Pg. 28)

I took the bike out for a quick run to see how the clutch felt. It didn't feel like it was going to ride away with me at a stop today, but then again I didn't take her out as long as I did last time.

She I got the bike home and into my garage, I let her run while I took my gear off, and I notice a faint blue smoke coming from under the motor. Naturally concerned, I investigated that, and found it to be coming from the breather tube from the top of the motor.

Damn, I'm such a newb to this...
...sometimes I'm sure I'm asking stupid questions.

So, is it normal to see some faint blue smoke come from the breather tube, or is it a sign of something bad.

The last time I saw something like this, it was coming from the breather thing on the valve cover of my 2.3 liter Ford Tempo. It was my understanding that the oil vapor I was seeing was caused by bad rings. But I was seeing so much of it that the oil was condensating on the bottom of the hood over the motor and dripping everywhere. It was so bad that my friends called the car the "smoking dragon," because at night, the headlights illuminated the blue smoke coming from under the hood and it looked like a dragon's nostrils breathing smoke!

I hopd this isn't another thing going wrong with this bike! lol
