Oh Lord (CB500) - The Leaky Bitch (p. 31)

Just ditch it all together. The seat is your fender.

Is the bike in your avatar yours? If so, could you post a bigger pic? I like it and it appears you have run yours without that fender. It looks clean!

Re: Oh Lord... (CB500) - Cut on the frame 01/17/2011

Aight guys. Its time I start thinking about finishing the frame. I am about to do some more welding and grinding on it this week, and hopefully next week it will see the media blaster.

I see three options:
1. Powder coat - Probably to most durable but most expensive?
2. Painted by a shop - I am guessing mid price, not as durable, and at the mercy of the shop's schedule
3. Self painted - MOst affordable and rewarding, but the least durable?

So what do you guys think? Wish I could do a poll on this!

Oh yeah; what kind of bike do I have exactly? Its a 1972 CB500... BUt is it a CB500F, CB500 Four, or a CB500K Four? I have no clue exactly about these things, and I am thinking it would be good to know for when I order parts!

Re: Oh Lord... (CB500) - Frame Finishing Options?

+1.

If you do decide to rattle can it, I recommend finding appliance epoxy. Comes in very limited colors and takes much longer to cure, but it doesn't need a primer underneath and is super durable.

Re: Oh Lord... (CB500) - Frame Finishing Options?

If I go with powder coat, are there any things on teh frame I need to be careful of. Any pressed bushings, rubber plugs, etc.? Are there parts on the frame that can not have powder coat on them? I have never done anything like this before, so I don't know.

From now on guys, I am gonna stop warning you all about my general cluelessness about motorcycles or fab and mechanical stuff. Just understand that I am friggen green here.

Re: Oh Lord... (CB500) - Question about powder coat...

No worries man- we all started somewhere.

The only things that can't be coated are mating surfaces. Think steering stem, inside of triple tree clamps, etc. If a spot needs grease, then powder shouldnt go there. Powder adds a little bit of thickness which can throw tolerances out of whack. Anything that will melt (rubber) needs to be removed since the parts need to be baked at high temps to cure.

Re: Oh Lord... (CB500) - Question about powder coat...

How do you keep powder off the surfaces you don't want them on? I would think if you use masking tape, when you bake the finish, it would cause the tape to burn up and scorch the finish, right?

Re: Oh Lord... (CB500) - Question about powder coat...

Now that's a detail I'm not 100% on. But if I'm not mistaken, the powder goes on like paint then the masking tape gets peeled off before baking.

Re: Oh Lord... (CB500) - Question about powder coat...

I would paint it... With proper prep it will last a lot longer than the high opinion of the color you pick. Meaning, by the time it needs repainted, you'll be sick of it anyways. And Rustoleuum (sp?) has a model called Hard Hat Finish. that is super durable. Other than that I'd just use Duplicolor. And pile it on after proper prep and primer. Cost, maybe 45 bucks. Dry in a day. And the glory is all yours!

Re: Oh Lord... (CB500) - Question about powder coat...

Personally I would go for powder coating.

If you really want to paint it yourself, and colour limitation is not an issue, I would use Hammerite. Its chip resistant, and super durable.

Hammerite sucks ass... I am a painter by trade.

Powder is the best finish no doubt. Though, most manufacturer's dont use it.

I'm not. However, Ive painted up a fair amount of parts over the years with it. Its tricky to work with, but Ive gotten results...

Ha... I wasn't try to sound like a douche. I'm just not a huge fan. Especially of there "hammered" finish. Reminds me of when people would use fleck, speckle or crackle finish paints in the 80's.

Re: Oh Lord... (CB500) - Question about powder coat...

Hey, no prob

Sure, the "hammered" stuff is horrible. Totally agree. Especially in the green...

The only colours I use are Smooth Black and Silver. And you're totally right, though, its not ideal. It's just what I know, and I would have used it if I didn't get it powdered.

Re: Oh Lord... (CB500) - Question about powder coat...

man i coat for a living, let me shed some light on it, powder is cheaper than professional paint, i can get any finish that a painter can and it is way more durrable, surfaces are plugged or masked... what are you looking to do man i have litterally thousands of colors in stock i can show you
check out our website for some ideas we have a shit ton of pics in the gallery

Re: Oh Lord... (CB500) - Question about powder coat...

Thanks, I am leaning towards powder. I will find a local place and talk to them about it here hopefully next week (arghh, but I don't have any days off from work until a week from this friday :( ). I am hope whoever I find to do the powder coat is not an idiot and will know what to mask and black or whatever. I am sure I can figure out some of it, but my lack of experience might cause a fuck up.

Thanks guys!

There is special masking tape that is rated for much higher temps and especially made for coating. I was actually just using the stuff this weekend when i was powdering my rotors. They have rolls and dots that you can trim down. Im sure you can find them other places but here is where I get mine from:

However, you mention taking it to a place?... They should have all this stuff man.

As far as colors go, have a gander around that site. There are 100s or them or just talk to Joe, he is the effing man with this stuff and has helped me to no end.

Re: Oh Lord... (CB500) - Question about powder coat...

Re: Oh Lord... (CB500) - Question about powder coat...

I'm not worried about color options. I am going shiney black with a white tank and seat base with some fancy pinstriping...

I took the frame over to a buddy's house today where we cleaned up some of the grinding and he welded the frame hoop/battery box on.
