Oh Lord (CB500) - The Leaky Bitch (p. 31)

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - swingarm question 03/23/11

I don't know what the bushings are actually made of, but I believe you are looking for a brass replacement. Maybe somebody on SOHC4 makes them?

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - swingarm question 03/23/11

Thanks, I just found out that the plastic bushings are ussually crappy and will fall apart once old. Why it has turned from a black color to a cork color is a mystery to me. I guess I will just order up some new ones.

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - kinda progress! 4/3/11 (seat & tank in)

BCR stuff came in today. Great quality stuff! I need to figure out the rubber bumpers that isolate the tank from the frame as the stock CB500 ones are too big.

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - kinda progress! 4/3/11 (seat & tank in)

Hey all. Again, here I am with little knowledge attemtping to pilfer yours!

When I took the master link off the chain, the clip got a little mangled. Through a little research, I have found I need a 98 link 530 chain. Other than 98 links, I have no clue what that means. Can I just use any 98 link 530 motorcycle chain? Anybody have any suggestions on a replacement chain that would be good for a 1972 CB500???

Thanks!

On another note, today I think I ordered all of the bushings I will need for the swingarm. Hope so anyways! I also ordered the Allballs stearing bearing kit. I think next season, when I do the wheels, I will do those bearings then. For now, I am just going to clean up what I have.

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - 04/07/3011 Question about motorcycle chains!

What revhead said. Also look to see how the new chain is joined, as some actually use a rivet type connecting link, instead of the clip type like you have now. Some say the rivet type is stronger, but only if done correctly. I have had good luck with both, and the clip type is much simpler.

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - 04/07/3011 Question about motorcycle chains!

Thanks for the info guys. What sucks is that my chain looks pretty good, but I broke that clip that holds the master link together.

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - 04/07/3011 Question about motorcycle chains!

DO NOT USE AN 'O' RING CHAIN ON 500 or 550
They don't have enough clearance and it will destroy crankcase, wears through where seal sits
You can use a 520 'O' ring chain with sprocket spaced out slightly

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - 04/07/3011 Question about motorcycle chains!

If the chain really is in good condition, just buy a new master link...

There are different 530 links, so try to find out the make of the chain at least.

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - 04/07/3011 Question about motorcycle chains!

Aight. I think I'm going to soak the chain in solvent for a couple of days to get the old chain oil off. It is kinda dry and sticky. Then I'll get it to the local shop and see if they have a link in stock that will work on it.

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - 04/07/3011 Question about motorcycle chains!

Hose it down with Easy Off and let it sit for an hour, then blast it clean at the car wash on rinse. You should be able to see what kind of chain and who made it.

Also, are you using a boat trailer tail light? looks almost identical to the one on my boat trailer.

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - 04/07/3011 Question about motorcycle chains!

HAHAHA! That is a boat trailer light! And it's crooked! Did you lollipop it on there? ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - 04/07/3011 Question about motorcycle chains!

Aight slayer, grow a couple inches and I might let you ride the bike!

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - 04/07/3011 Question about motorcycle chains!

John, I should be on the road this weekend. You going to be ready?

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - 04/07/3011 Question about motorcycle chains!

LINGO!!!

I ridiculously wish my bike was rolling soon, but it is suffering from budget-itis. No money, no time! I am hoping to pour some time and money on it soon though. Hopefully I can get it in rough rolling form soon. I don't care if it looks pretty this riding season as long as I can get it on the road late summer/early fall.

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - 04/07/3011 Question about motorcycle chains!

You need to find cheaper women to spend time with. ;)

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - 04/07/3011 Question about motorcycle chains!

Amazingly, and ironicly, I am seeing that woman I met the night when you came out to the bar. I guess my drunk-off-my-ass charms are worth something!

Damn! I forgot how much it costs to date!

Coming up on the bike: Get the bushings out of the swingarm and then powdercoat, then reassembly. I am lacking some nickle-and-dime parts, but nothing that should keep me from turning it into a roller after powdercoat.

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - 04/07/3011 Question about motorcycle chains!

Yeah, the dating thing can get expensive. My chick is cheap though. She has finally come around to the bike idea, but there is a catch. I have to build a side car. She did find my next project though. A free Honda motorcycle engine. I don't know what it is yet. I just have to go and pick it up. I am thinking go-cart.

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - 5/15/11 new question about Swingarm

In preperation for media blast and powder coat, I tried getting the bushings and stuff out of the swingarm. I was able to get the plastic caps and cotton band out of the swingarm, but none of the metal bushings. How do these things come out? Do they need to come out for powdercoat or can I just mask them off? I'd like to clean up the bits and reinsert them if they can come out without tearing anything up. But, if Its gonna take a hydraulic press or something, forget it. I will just clean it up.

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - 5/15/11 new question about Swingarm

they need to come out and the cylinder needs to be cleaned it is going to be packed with old grease it willr un out all over your powder work and oven. stinks like ass and has to be cleaned up before future bakes can take place... just a mess, i use a small bearing puller to get them out

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - 5/15/11 new question about Swingarm

Yeah, plus it's a perfect opportunity to upgrade to bronze bushings.
