OJ's CB360 and a Story of Not Enough Time

Not possible.

It's a lot easier to pull the engine and just remove the bottom case than it is to mess with the entire top end, though.

Thought so, dammit. It's just few drops, so I will wait.

Another weird thing. The missing on the right was due to right cylinder timing being off. Left was still bang on, but right was advanced by a fair bit.

And, to not let things get too boring. Tested the charging and got >16v between pink and yellow at 1200 rpm...and only 2-4v between pink and white. Looks like I need to find another stator.

Make sure you gap the points before you set timing. Right side timing is set by the gap, left side timing is set by rotating the plate. So gap the points first, then time the left, then regap the right to get the timing you need.

How's your charging measured at the battery?

I do check the timing with a timing light. Initial set-up is static with a test light, but since I went and got myself a timing light, I do use that to check the timing.

The charge at the battery is 12.5-12.7V at idle and didn't go over 12.8 when revving in the garage. I guess I was hoping that alternator and rotor would be OK. I took the bike for a 30 minute ride with lights on, no extended periods above 6000 rpm. When I got home, the battery still had 12.6V charge. Shouldn't the battery be quite a bit lower? I might take another test riding session tomorrow, maybe ride around for an hour and see if the bike dies. Alternator was giving 18 volts across pink and yellow tonight.

Even with the issues, I am building a mold for the seat. Basically gluing 1/2" foam boards and cutting the center hollow so it's easier to check that the seat will fit over battery and fender as I will leave that stuff for later. Not yet decided if I should go for a two up or just a simple little seat.

Sounds like charging system isn't too bad.
Have you fitted solid state reg/rect? (I could go back through thread iand look but it's easier to ask ;) )

I have one coming from Sonreir. I'm confused with the whole charging system troubleshooting, need to re-read some posts.

It's actually real simple as soon as you understand it.
It's also real easy to get things wrong if you don't understand exactly what you are supposed to do (or even if you think you know)

Got the Sparck Moto R/R installed yesterday and I would say the charging problems are or at least appear to be history. Very easy to install and makes life with CB360 much easier.

The Sparck Moto R/R fixed my 360's charging woes as well. I can't believe how well it charges now!

sounds like a commercial! haha how much is this magical devise from spark moto?

No idea but it is specifically for 360 (also fits many other permanent magnet Honda's)
Taking the extra wiring out of the circuit probably prevents pretty large voltage drop?
I re-wire with whatever R/R I happen to pick up though ;D

No advertising here, just stating the facts and the R/R works.

Last little hickup is engine running rich. I have aftermarket Emgo upswept mufflers that should be less restrictive than stock, stock airboxes (filthy and potentially restrictive) and of course 378 cc mod. Jets are 68 main, 110 secondary and 35 slow. 21 mm float height. Engine seems to be running quite rich, and I need no or very little choke to start. I'm not sure what to try other than change secondaries to 100 or 105.

After fighting with 30something year old parts and a knock off Kohler R/R, the ease at which I resolved the charging system was almost startling! Nothing's been this easy on any of my bikes! But wait, there's more! If you act now, you'll stop sulfating or boiling your battery! Exclamation marks!!!

The stock airbox is the problem.
Either fit smaller secondary mains or relocate battery and fit K&N filters.
One thing you could try, remove filters and run empty airboxes. Put a layer of oil or grease inside to catch some of the dust that may enter

I've been lazy + there has been exceptionally little time lately...the problem is becoming chronic. However, I've been riding, which is good too, but now the bike is tucked in in the corner of the garage.

What I have run into is a little rough but complete XR600. Having seen the super sweet XR600 engine mounted on a CB360 with relatively little modifications, this got me interested. I think I'll go and see the bike and try to find a spot to store all my crap. The rolling CB360 is sitting outside already and apparently must be out of sight come spring time.

Since I have two CB360 frames, I could potentially use the rolling chassis for my experiments and keep the #1 bike somewhat running.
