It's saying that this thing, here, needs to be removed before you can split them.

Got it. That thing is welded to the shift shaft, so I'm thinking I could remove the circlip holding the shift shaft in place and slide that shift arm away just enough without removing it all the way through.

Nah. You don't need to disassemble anything. Just unhook the spindle arm from the shifter drum and pull the whole thing through the engine.

I think its just saying that that part hooks into the shift drum and if you try and split the cases it will prevent it from happening since they are hooked together (with the drum being in the upper half and that part you have circled in the lower half. You can just move it down to 'unhook' it while you split the cases.

Bah, ok I understand the mechanism now. There is a circlip on the left side of the engine on the shift shaft that keeps that spindle arm from coming out. If I remove that circlip, I can pull the shaft all the way through. Is that shift shaft hooked to anything else internally or do you reassemble it the same way? Slide it into the right side and poke it through the hole on the left side when reassembling? Or do you insert the shaft before
bolting the cases back up?

Ah, ok great. Clarified :)

Yeah exactly. I'll slide it out just enough to clear. Hope to do that tonight :) I'm like you Perry...I find time over lunch to look at things :)

Engine upside down, spindle arm out of the way, all bolts are loosened, even the one under the drain plug :)

I've never split the cases upside down before. Wen I separate the halves, should I be expecting anything to pop out of place naturally or should the lower case lift right off?

The shift tines are all you'll have to reposition when you put it back together- (4, 5, 6) in the pic.

I'll tell you tonight but the guys are saying that this is the beneficial thing about flipping it upside down. Cxman was referring to the xl line as well when referring to difficulty with the shift forks

with the xl"s you assemble it right side up at least that is the easies way

Yeah cx was telling me about a friend who can put those things back together in a snap! He tapes a string to the forks and uses it to align the forks then pulls the strong and tape out right at the last second as he puts the cases together :D at least that's how I understood it

huh that still is the hard way :-\ if you do the xl right side up with the trans in the bottom all that shit is taken care of
you do have to lift the upper half by the crankshaft ends but it aint that heavy
