Its a great beer, but with the high alcohol by volume, you can only have so many before that green wire looks yellow.

Thats my roommates camera, mine looks similar just with out the 2600 dollar price tag (not including the 1200 dollar lens).

My roommate just picked up a 72' CB500 FOUR this morning, so now the garage has enough room you 2 people and a 12 pack, maybe a wrench or 2.
 
Getting this engine rebuilt is going to be a PITA. I am already stressed out over it.

So, if you have a 71' CB450 Engine that you know runs, please let me know.

Got the pistons out of the jugs evenly, crank rolls smooooooooth. Cylinders are smoooooth, only needs some honing...

Thank you PB Blaster, the remaining rust just flaked off.
 
So guys, with new pistons, rings and a cylinder hone will I be in good shape?

The roughness you can see in the jugs is flaking off just by gentle rubbing it with my finger.

Check in the $50 mod thread for the soda blaster - it cleans nearly everything off and won't harm metal.

But it depends how deep the groove is. You can get rings up to +1 mm oversize.
 
yep, as long as that scar in the wall is not too deep, say .001, then you are good to go with just cleaning those pistons well, honing the cylinder wals out .001, and replacing the rings with .001 oversized rings....if it is deep er than that, well I am not sure if they make oversized pistons for the 175!
 
The cylinder walls are butter, the top of the left side piston has a small dent in it... looks like someone shoved something through the spark plug hole to try and unlock this engine...

I got this stuff called Evapo-Rust, HOLY HELL... You let that stuff soak, them wipe away the remaining rust...
 
In that case, I would try and find some NOS pistons, should not be too hard, then get the .001 over rings and have the heads honed out anyway, that way you know you have a good smooth bore and a good surface for your new pistons and rings to glide in and make good compression. After that, this thing will run like a pissed off singer sewer! While you have the head off, great time to port and polish, get another poney or two out of her, every one counts on the small cc scoots!

You have been very helpful... I am trying to decide if this is a job I can tackle?

Is the bottom end a PITA to pull apart to have the cases blasted?

Thats beyond me brother, I have never split the cases before, I have only been in the tops! To be honest i have always been a little scared to, but I have found more confidence from my fellow DTT brothren, so i actually look forward to the next opportunity. There is a ton on knowledge on this site and the best part is, that about 90% of what you read is true! (unlike lots of other sites)

I am sure you can do it, even if you have to ask a few dozen questions and do hours of research on here. First thing though...get you a climbers manual!

I've only been on this site for 3 weeks and I already sound like I know what i am doing!

splitting the cases is really not all that intimidating, and if I found what you found in my motor Id want to have a looksee in there and give it a good cleaning. Id suggest getting a Haynes manual as well, I found it far more useful when it came to engine internals as opposed to the clymer's which is fairly brief.
 
Got some work done late last night, the heat was too much to try and get anything done during the day, so my roommate and I worked till about 3AM on each of our bikes.

Mine is now completely stripped. Just a pile of parts. We got the engine out of his 72' 500 Four he just picked up.
