Holy cancer, thank god these will get the brilo pad then off to powder coating.

hey quick question how did you manage to take out all the spokes sucessfully? heat, penetrating oil? Also did you go from the spoke side on the square boss or use a screwdriver from the rim side. Im going to attempt the same thing pull all the spokes out and paint then put back.....

Nice man! I did the same thing. Its time consuming but worth the effort.

I used a 50/50 CLR/Water bath and left the spokes and nipples in there over night. After wards I would take a drill and put the threaded end of the spokes in the drill and spun it around with a thing of steel wool to shine them up. Worked really well. Im still going to paint mine but if I didnt want to I could leave them as steel.

Good Luck!

PB Blaster had a cigarette then went to work. Used a flat head on the rim side to break them free, for the tough ones, I used a tiny open end to break it loose from the spoke side. After they were loose, to save time, I used a drill on low speed to pull them all. Left them in evapo-rust for 48 hours, removed all of the rust and calcium deposits.

I've got a 8-inch bench grinder with a polishing pad on it. Works ok, but because of how tarnished they were I used a fine steel wool soaked in a liquid metal polish.

I need a more aggressive wheel for the grinder, and a heavy duty polish.

Yeah, I found a magical product called evapo-rust.... The name says it all, and it delivers. I am trying; emphasis on "trying" to build this thing on a $2500 budget including the $300 for the bike. I figure saving the spokes will save me $200. I took a lot of photos of the pattern before I de-laced them, so I can lace them myself, then have them trued by a pro.

The actual rim is going to be black, so I will let blasting take care of the cancer on those.

Finally back working on the bike. Had a month or two or pure madness in my life, and did not get anything done.

Update: Parts are on the way to get this engine up and running, I have some photos of the tank I just got from a member on here and I am super stoked on it.

More from Penelope to come.

Wow, I have been out of the loop. How did I miss Penelope? This is awesome. Starting out with a giant turd and turning it into something beautiful. You have your work cut out for you. I just finished cleaning up my spokes (well the front wheel anyway) and I do not envy you.

I saw someone told you to get a haynes manual as well. If you really are going to tear into the engine, I would suggest getting a manual from Bill over at hondatwins.net (tbpmusic). He rebuilds 450 engines and had put together a great annotated manual that he will send you for like $10.

Motivated! Im back. Spring is going to be here before I know it, so I got my ass in gear and got the end of the frame shortened up. Also dropped the engine off to be rebuilt. Time to get the ball rolling.

Used some 1.00 - .095 DOM for the rear of the frame and had my boss lay down some Tig! Sickkk haha. His real Tig Weave is unbelievable.

I see you ride a couple sx 650's. Very fun little skis but after you ride a 750 or an 800 you realize how crapy they corner. but good to see you into it! it is kind of becoming a lost art
