Project "Caroline" CB350four And so it begins!

Nice, Looks like the whole scheme is heading in the right direction. The little details are going to tie it all togehter nicely.

Thanks guys, it is all about the little details on this build, that and the slightly different styling is all that will really set this bike apart from a stock bike. I am trying real hard to keep this bike looking as if it were an offered special edition CB350f. Only someone educated on a stock CB350f appearance will really know the differences. The major changes (that will be easily noticeable different from stock) will be the rear and front fenders (which will be chopped down smaller than stock), the seat (manx style), and the bars (clubmans). Other than that it will only be performance upgrades and subtle changes in painted parts and such. With every part I change from stock appearance I try to find a way to modify it to only be slightly different, fit with the scheme well, and fit into the "could have been factory made" look. I have a long road to go, but I take it bits at a time right now. I have so much going on with work, and an out of work injured wife, that garage time has been very little! Hopefully soon though I will be able to really put some time on her!

Thanks again for all the comments! I really look forward to having this one finished and running again!

take care of wifey man... thought of you this weekend ... we shot this gold
sun gold baby!

Joe, is that single shot powder, or is it a transparent layer over a base? If it is single, what is it and where can I get a half a pound of it?

No, I am not doing the powder myself, Kiley and I have a friend that does it, and he cuts us a deal if we do all the work and bring the powder with some booze and pizza! Good to have friends with fun trades eh?

ha haha hell ya! tell him it is a real easy powder to shoot, no fair a day area's, lays clean. we use glass clear over it or SD clear...
had to show you after i say it

So the plan is to shoot the frame and swinger in Gloss Black, this:

The engine cases, jugs, and head, in a High Temp Metallic Black, this:

Then I will do the center of the brake rotor, the caliper, the rear sproket, my valve cover, and a couple other odd and end bits in Sun Gold, with a 40% Gloss Clear, this:

What do you guys think, it all look like it will fit the theme and make the cut?

do not use the high temp on the motor man, the cases simply will not reach operation temp to final cure it... use a reg powder if not it will be really fragile like paint is... high temp needs to reach high temps to cure and it will simply not do it on your motor... regular powder will hold up just fine (i have coated over 100 set of jugs and never had any issues and we are talking much bigger motors than 350's ... but i have coated 2 sets of 350 jugs)
for the black use SD wet black... it is what we use have him turn the KV down on the gun when he shoots and it will be flawless finish... much stronger powder (normal powder will take 1000 hrs salt blast this will take 3000 hrs) it is what you see i have been useing all ove my bike for the newest rendition of the build
a while back we did a set of sport bike wheels in the sun gold and 40% has a really clean production look to it... will look great
personally i think that metalic black is a bad idea, (even the reg temp powder) a while back we bought over 100lbs and they sent us 10lbs of free powder... one of them was the metalic black. looks like ass man, i have a sample bottle shot of it. if i can remember ill snap a pic, not cool at all.
you want a really cool finish. do that motor in speedway black... with that same 40% gloss over it

the centers of these are done in speedway gloss with full gloss clear... but with the gloss frame and the satin gold the 40% gloss would be best, then you can get a full pound of it... what are you shooting that you only need a 1/2 lb? with what you have listed there for good coverage i would go wiht a pound

Granted we shoot with wagner's so they tend to go though a bit more powder... but i would recomend a full pound of them (except on the jugs of course)

just my 2c man... that metalic black is UGLY!

Very good to know Joe! On my research though, the regular temp powders say that they are only recommended for operating temps less than 600 degrees F, and a head reaches temps much higher than that! Are you absolutely positive the metallic charcoal will hold up on my 4 cylinder head! That thing gets really hot! Much higher revs than your HD, and all 4 cylinders are burning in one solid lump!

Does anyone know what temps a small 4 cylinder head reaches at its hottest operating temp and at the hottest location (exhaust port)?

got to be honest bud... i would not think so at all... granted i have only built 4 motors now in my life (all of them bores for HD motors)
but i have been working on them for a long time never heard of a bike motor coming near 600, have heard of header pipe at the first bend... but that is a completely diff material (the pipe vs head) if it was me, i would use reg powder, it is up to you bud. i would just hate to see it chip and crack... worst thing you face with reg powder is a slight discoloration, but with the silver you will never notice.

I am going to talk with the people at powder buy the pound first to be sure, but I think I am going to take your advice as long as they think it will be no problem too. I really want the charcoal color anyway, and that was my first choice. Thanks again Joe, you have be really helpful man!
