Project Odin - XS400F

Wicked.... Of course we don't expect you to be posting much... Pretty hard to be posting stuff when your out riding.

are those the clipons and mounting ears from Mikes?

also.. goddamn that 400 looks tiny under you.. lol

Nope, they're off ebay. The ones from Mike's are too short to do anything with. I think 8 inches long. These ones are a few inches longer and fit pretty nice.

Naw, bike's not on the road. Truth be told, I don't even get out on the street legal 650 as much as I should. Too busy doing all sorts of stuff right now. Hopefully things slow down in the next little while so I can get some stuff done. Hopefully get some work done on the GS1000 as well.

I love your bike. I have a 81 xs400 i'm working on and i hope it comes out as nice as yours. I was wondering did you just change the main jet, pilot jet and raise the needle for your exhaust or did you change the needle jet also. I'm about to build a exhaust with emgo shorty mufflers and i'm changing the filters to pods. Any advice you can give me would be much appreciated.

Did your XS come with the rear disc? I have a 1981 XS400 Special and it's got the rear drum. Been thinking about changing it over to a disc somehow.

Love the bike, looks great, good inspiration for us XS400 owners out there!

I changed all the jets and raised the needle. Took a lucky guess on the jetting and it runs great! Never touched the idle screws either. If I were to actually put it on the road I might spend a little more time fine tuning, though it runs pretty nice as it is.

wow... i like that! btw, what does the typical cafe 400 get for MPG?

Bike isn't on the road, so I really couldn't say. I would imagine I could get 250km to a tank though. It's just a light little bike with taller sprockets and a 6 speed tranny. Still enough power to smoke the rear wheel though! ;D

Both 79 XS400's that I got are stock disc rear. If you're looking to convert, I kept the swinger, rear wheel, caliper and MC from the parts bike, plus a bunch of little parts you'd need for install. Let me know if you're interested and what it would be worth to you. I think the drum on a cast wheel looks nasty on these bikes.

Yeah, I've been thinking about it. I'm going to keep the drum for now, especially because I figured if I'm going to be doing some distance riding I'll want a mechanical brake of some sort. I wanted to ask, how did you hook up the Acewell gauges to your bike? I haven't really gotten into it, but I don't think there is a CDI on the XS400.

Edit: I know how to set up the speedo, I'm more concerned about RPM pickup for the tach.

Just pick a spark plug wire and wrap the yellow wire they provide around it about 3-7 times. It picks up the induced current from when the plug fires. It's actually easier to set up than the speedo. Speedo needs to be programmed for the size of the wheel.

Why do you say that a mechanical/drum brake is better for long distance?

Ok nice, that's pretty easy.

I don't have a real reason except to me it seems like it would be best to have a brake available that didn't need to be bled, had no chance of leaking, and didn't need to have it's seals rebuilt periodically. I just feel like it would have less things about it that could go wrong if I was hundreds of miles away from home.

You're bike is very sweet, it makes me wish I was at home with a garage. ;D
