Project Odin - XS400F

Kudos Rudy, it's really looking very slick!

Where'd you find those little blinkers? I wasn't thinking of putting any on my CB since Florida doesn't require them, but may re-consider.

Thanks for the kind words guys!

Those little blinkers are off ebay. Don't remember who the seller is, but look for cateye turn signals and you'll find a few different kinds. There's the ones with the amber lense, smoked lense and I think there's a clear one too. You can also find them in black instead of chrome.

Lookin great!

Tires look nice n beefy.

Ease, they look every bit as beefy in person, maybe a little more. I wasn't expecting them to be that big, but I like it!

Well, wiring is finished with the exception of the horn. Everything works as it should with no extra crap. May put a switch in to turn off headlight power after safety is done, don't know yet, I know it's not legal. Wiring tray is a bit of a mess, but thats what happens when all the wiring terminates under the seat, or under the tank. There's almost no wiring in the headlight anymore. Just the wires for the headlight and signals. There was a huge space under the tank where I put all the connectors, so everything looks pretty clean. As for functionality, everything that was stock is still there except the light checker crap and some other box that wasn't even in the schematic.

The little battery turns the engine over like a CHAMP!! Couldn't ask for more! I'm QUITE pleased. This starter draws a peak of 67 amps when cranking (measured with an amp clamp), and I did it for a while, more than I would ever need to start the bike.

Spark is strong, which is good cuz I haven't had either of my engines running yet.

I'm looking for a Colortune with a 12mm thread for when I get around to setting the carbs up. Found a guy in the GTA that has a standard type (not motorcycle type) in 14mm and I'm pretty sure you can get a 12mm adapter to change out the 14mm. Don't know for sure, but I'll find one sometime.

All that's left now is carbs, cables and brakes. Oh, and paint a few little parts black, such as the engine mounts.

Here's a video of all the goods. I forgot to plug the rear signal in, that's why it didn't work right away, and I was too lazy to start the video over again. That signal relay is LOUD!

Nope, it's perfectly natural. ;D I kiss them both goodnight and tuck them in. Some nights I even read them a story! :D I keep telling them that I'll find them a big brother someday. Who knows when that'll be though. I have a line on a GS1100, but, alas, not enough funds. Someday I'll fill out the family a little more.

Jeez!! Is this what it's like when you have kids??? Lol!

Rudy - got a wiring diagram to share? I'm still sorting mine out.

BTW - being able to turn off your headlight isn't illegal. My 1975 BMW can be shut off, as could my 1973 CB500. That's the way they were made and they pass safety as such. Heck, if the bike was made without turn signals, you don't need them.

It's entirely likely your bike was made with the headlight as a running light, but nothing to stop you from adding a switch. Just don't turn off the rear tail light. That wouldn't earn you any points with the cops. I was actually pulled over once because my tail light wasn't lit up. It was on my CB550F while I was still sorting out the wiring during the 15 day temp permit period where you can run with no safety.

Yeah, it's alright for you to be in love with my bike, lol! As long as you treat with respect and have it back by 10 so I can read it a bedtime story! ;D

Tim, lights were on all the time in 79, there is no stock switch. My 78 650 has one, but it doesn't turn anything off for whatever reason. I thought for safety all the lights had to come on the way they came from the factory. I dunno, I'm not too worried about it.

Lol...all kidding aside... great build.. Once you're at that stage would you mind posting some video of it running (on a road somewhere)?

That's the plan man! I'll do a fair bit of video and put it up as one triumphant post! Drive by shots, chase car shots, on board, the works! Lol.

Well folks, it's been a productive day. I've fixed the noise in the 650, found another engine for it as well, lubed the cables so my left forearm won't get bigger than my right, and...... got the 400 running!!!!!!

Here's some video. The operator didn't know how to operate the camera, but I managed to salvage this. You get the idea.

Methinks this is a little bit too much on the loud side of things. Don't really know yet because it was just in the garage. May need to make a few wee Supertrapp style mufflers to put on there.

Lemme know what you think!!

Nothing was wrong with the 400. It's just the first time I've had it running.

It actually started surprisingly easy. Lifted the needle one position, pilot and main jets up 2 sizes and new seals, gaskets and cleaning. Bench synced and idle screws set to 2.5 turns out. I'll tune it a little better once I get my adapter for the colortune and fix the oil leak thats dripping on the pipe (that's the smoke i was trying to clear in the video). I may be able to get away with just one size up for pilots.

I won't be able to actually try it out until I get the brakes all done and the chain on, but I don't think that will take long.

Hit a snag tonight. Can't get the oil to stop leaking. Slowed it down a bit, but looks like I'm splitting the cases and re-sealing. Might just say screw it and put my spare engine in instead. Will likely start tomorrow on the change out. What a pain in the ass!

Spent the night designing instead. Here's what I came up with for the mufflers. Design will likely change a little, but my roomie will laser cut it from stainless for me, and I'll polish it up real nice.

I'll chop off the 45 degree bends and clamp this on to the straight part just behind where the wrap stops.

Wow...... can't say I've accomplished too much lately. Haven't touched the engine yet, but I DO have the brakes cleaned out and back on the bike. Just ordered new stainless brake lines for front and back, as well as new banjo bolts (Oooooooo, shiney!!). Should get them in just over a week. Still want to find some speed bleeders. I'll try the local Yammy tomorrow when I pick up taillights for the 650. Can't cost that much, can they? May take some time this weekend and monday to fix that oil leak. I'll get this beast goin yet!!
