Project "Unrecognizeable" CB450 gets supercharged by Laps For Oil Racing

Terry Naughtin and I had the motor apart again and we decided to go all out. We contacted a racing buddy of his who wrenches for the Laps For Oil team in Los Alamos, NM and they sent us one of their 840cfm superchargers. Kafe Werken out of Stuttgart, Germany fabricated an airbox and intercooler. We bored our the barrels to accept the new 74mm pistons (498cc) but had to do some machining to lower the compression to 8:1. With the bump in displacement and running a modest 6 psi of boost we dynoed at 86 RWHP without the intercooler. Even better is that we have more than 70 ft-lbs of torque from 6300 to almost 9000 RPM. I took it for a spin and it was lifting the wheel with ease in second gear. Tomorrow we plan to mount the intercooler just under the steering head and an oil cooler under the seat. Then we should be safe to run 11 lbs of boost and get 120 HP on pump gas. 14 lbs should put us about 135 HP but we will have to run race fuel for that. Plus, the new dry clutch is on the way since we're at the limits of the stocker.

I want to thank Team Hansen, Laps For Oil, and Kafe for this incredible project.

That is possibly the coolest thing I have ever seen. I want one.

Most important question: how does it sound?

A video would do wonders...... and probably cause my pants to tent.

That is just insane. 120 hp on a 500cc vertical twin. Is that thing safe? Honda never intended the 450 motor to produce that much power. How about suspension upgrades? By the time you finish you would've spent enough money to buy a high performance sport bike. Which begs the question, why didn't you just get a sportbike?

Sick, wicked and nasty seems to suit this machine!!!

That is increadible. I'm facinated with supercharging small displacement bibe motors. Can you post any pictures you have of the motor--specifically how the belt system was routed, etc.? Also, when you went to a dry clutch, did you just use the stock plates? Speaking of that, how did those little clutch plate hold up to the torque?

Finally, when you supercharged the motor, did you alter the compression ratio?

Though I have plenty of projects on my plate, I think my next bike will either be a super small 2-stroke bike with farings or a brat-style bike with a supercharger--something to haul both my wife and I.

Any help is appreciated.

Oh man, that's a good one. I totally fell for it. Only a fool would spend that much money on an old 450. Nicely done, kinda like Star Trek when they talk about dylethium crystals. Sounds plausible but it's all made up.

Have i been had? I would have and am certainly interested in supercharging an old twin...

Well, would have been nice not to spoil it until the end of the day, but oh well.

FYI, that photo is one of Terry's motors and he does have a trick (and pricey) dry clutch kit for the 450. Not going down that road, but I do plan on the oiling system with cooler next winter.

Also, we actually are doing the 74mm (Hi-compression) slugs for 498cc. I'll update that in the the legit thread. When completed we are hoping for about a 35% increase in power over bone-stock.

And to DrJ, the suspension has been upgraded a bit, though riding a 40 year old machine with 120 rwhp would probably be better suited for a Halloween write-up...and I do have a modern sportbike, the 748.

Someone's got some good Photoshop skills...

That's not photoshopped. That is one of Terry's real motors. The oiling system and cooler are a relatively common mod for him and he does have a dry-clutch available ($$$). Go to the Team Hansen site.

. i'm a little disappointed, i checked before/after i posted, and i didn't think it was april 1st yet in canada.
i've already had to go through all this stuff today hours ahead of you...
