Project Yamaha- CS3 resto.

Been a bit quiet here.
Waiting for a couple of parts from the states
- left hand control, and new throttle cable.

Then, I need a pair of new tyres and then I think it is almost time to load it up, and take it in to try for a road worthy certificate.

My idea is that it will be easier to get an old bike, in original condition registered then a modified one. So get it registered, get a bit of riding done on it, and then open up the pandora box that is cafe racers.

If the parts get here this week, and I cant get them on by the weekend, will take it out as is, for a good thrash in on some quiet back roads, out of town.

Just got the throttle cable from the States.

Being frustrated by the model specifications
It is a CS3B- since the cable I got today was for a CS3C scrambler
I assumed that the throttle cable would be the same for both the B and C
Not a common here in Australia, and I have a cable that now matches up to the hand control but is too short to reach the joiner, let alone the fact that it is a smaller diameter cable.

Not sure which one is correct, and which one is the odd one out?

How short is too short? I know you said you want to keep it stock-ish for legal reasons, but maybe you can get some lower bars to make the cable work.

That is one option

Kind of thinking that I will swing by the local Yamaha dealer and have a talk with him.

Found out that he has a few old Yammy trail bikes in his shed, so hopefully he will help find a solution, and short list what I need to do to get it on the road

The cables dont match diameter.

Think I will just use a few zippy ties to hold it in place, and take the bike for a ride on some private country roads this weekend- get it out, loud and stretch its legs,

Found a fix to the problem,
Been shopping at Dime City !!!

And have got on the way set of grips and a throttle unit that will match up with the existing cable, so will have that all squared away
Also tracked down a local supplier of tyres to suit the rims

So all in all, real happy to have sourced some solutions !!!

Had one of those weeks...

Just came home hoping to have a few parts redy to put on the bike this weekend, but not going to happen.

Sat looking at the bike thinking of all the things that I need to do, and had a few thoughts that I have bit of more than I can chew

Problems to fix (that I know of at the moment)

- Leaking carbs, if I have the fuel tap on, leaking from the bottom of the bowl. But only on one carb!-- happy to hear thoughts on this problem
- Replace the perished tyres
- Fix up the flasher unit,
- Neutral light- currently not working
- Swap out the throttle unit (awaiting parts from DimeCity)

And I am sure there are more lurking around the corner ??? :-\

Im not familiar with that models carbs but check the bowls drain plug, its sounds like the gasket/washer has perished.

Thanks for the suggestion.
Having some issues with the throttle unit, so I was thinking that it may be held open and flooding it.

Talked to another bloke, and he suggested to clean out the needle seat, as it might have some dirt obstructing it from seating in correctly and closing off the fuel.

This came in from Speed & Sport in the states, this will help sort out the electrics I hope. The old switch was a bit moody.

Had a good weekend, sorted out the kick start.
Had a bit of play on the spline, but with some agriculutral know-how and a roll pin, all good.

Was great to have the bike out and take it for a little spin round the paddock, put a great big grin to see the bike going.

Great motivation to kick on with the project, and get it on the road for good

Spent a little time on the bike, and was able to fit the switch unit.

But after the weekend ride in the back of the ute, I saw that the front seals have let go, oil leaking onto the rim :(

One more thing to fix, but I think I will leave that job for the professionals.

Here is the new unit fitted :D

Had a few days off over Easter, caught up with family, which was good, but made me real itchy to get back to the bike.

Am still waiting for a after market throttle unit from Dime City, and think that might be the key to getting the bike to the mechanic to get the "To Do before Rego" list.

BTW thinking of taking the CS3 to a local show'n'shine & swap meet in a few weeks, just to see reactions in person

Got a box of parts from Dime City in the mail today, and a long weekend coming ;D might be able to fit them during the week, and leave the weekend of a nice long bike camping trip.

Getting the feeling for every step forward, one back.

For each problem I fix (or think I fix) I find another one.

Unfortunately I think I am reaching the extent of my (shallow) knowledge and will have to put my hand in the pocket to get the next few problems sorted :-\

The bike is off to the mechanic today...

Getting a break down of what repairs and work is needed for rego.

fingers crossed I dont need to sell a kidney to make it happen

Got the report back from the mechanic, and was pretty happy with the news.
Found all the things I knew would be on the fix list
- new tyres,
- no flasher
- No front brake light

A couple of other little things, but nothing too major.

Was happy with that.

Will go and have a look at the actual costings and break down and make a start on the work

Still trying to pin the mechanic down on the final break down of the costings, but got a round figure of a couple of hundred to bring her up to road worthy standard.

Got a big package in the mail today, was able to pick up on ebay a great 2nd seat for the bike. Really happy with the condition, and price !!! A lot cheaper than the foam I was needing to re-do the old one- so was a GREAT score !!!
