Re: Back in the race for the ton.

You cant't just replace the studs?

Re: Back in the race for the ton.

Not studs. Bolt holes that someone over time red filled several times it looks like. I may have a friend weld in the holes and I will have to rethread new ones.

Back in the race for the ton.

Gotcha. Any reason you can't use timeserts or helicoil etc.?

Re: Back in the race for the ton.

The hole on one was drilled larger multiple times and won't accept an insert the size to match the rest. I may have a friend weld the holes in and redrill them.

Re: Back in the race for the ton.

Bummer. Well, good that you have the resources to repair it.

Re: Back in the race for the ton.

I think you need to change title, with that motor and a re-build, should be in the race for ton-fifty

The engine is in primer. Don't worry about the covers because they'll get polished anyway and using them is easier than taping.

The engine was painted a few days ago. I got the frame back from powder today and a friend helped get the two reunited.

Can you put the jugs (cylinders) on with the engine with it in the frame on a Zook?
I didn't try, layed the assembled engine on its side and lowered the frame onto it, then dropped the mounting bolts in, put the nuts on the bottom and stood her upright.

You can. The service manual has you replace the pistons with it still in the frame. Its tight but will work.

I reinstalled the engine the same way. I wish I knew that trick when I built my gs1000

I'm spinning my wheels until the engine gaskets come in. So I got started on polishing. It's not perfect but this is a road bike not a show bike.

Anyone with issues getting a small piston ring compressor. The rim of a plastic cup and hose clamps work amazingly. $2 vs $50 for two ring compressors.

I got the top end back together. Was wanting to get it all buttoned up but I forgot to get oil and a filter today. Tomorrow is another day.
