Man, I envy you guys that don't have snow half the year. I like the blue headlight bucket, and I can't wait to see the tank and tail painted up.

There bikes are pretty under-rated for what they are. Sure they're heavy and slow when they're compared to an H1, but they're so much easier to tune up than 4 strokes. If you can chop enough weight off, the engines are the easy part.

Have you given any thought to engine work yet? I have some ideas for mine that I wouldn't mind sharing with you if you're interested.

Peace,
Eric

Nice! Clean and simple, just the way it should be! And the cops are already waiting to chase you I see!

Re: Re: 72' Suzuki GT380 first time build (Roller Mockup!)

^^^ LOL, it took me a lil while to figure out what you were talking about!

Re: Re: 72' Suzuki GT380 first time build (Roller Mockup!)

Looks like a good canvas, although the part of the front mudguard, which sticks out from the stanchions and out looks too small compared to the rest of the mudguard.

Two stroke bikes are fun to ride :)

At this point I was just planning on rebuilding the motor to factory specs, and carb tuning for aftermarket exhaust and velocity stacks. Im all ears for any input though. I am interested to hear what your motor work plans are.

The front guard had a little dent in it so I chopped it short past the dent. I kinda like it chopped short, the rear is pretty short too.

Diesel and Eric,
I'll be able to get that exhaust in a couple of weeks if thats cool. Diesel, If your buddy cant wait I understand.

Im going to paint the front fork lowers same color as the frame. I think that i want to go with clipons and lower the front about and inch more. Will probably wait and see how the bike sits with the weight of the motor on it. cant wait til its rideable/done
Thanks dudes!

Here's deal on exhaust, he started doing some research and is realizing what they are worth. >:-[ They may hit ebay first. I'll keep you posted.

Honestly, he would probably be better off selling it on here. The last two 380 pipes I saw go on ebay went for $175 and $150 shipped. They were both were 3-3 pipe sets. They don't go for as much as some other spannies (like the h1 and h2 pipes), because there aren't that many of these old beasts left in running shape. Besides, the 3-1 pipes aren't worth as much as the 3-3 pipes.

In the end, I guess it's his choice though. Either way, a used pipe isn't worth much more than 175 to me. (Unless it's one of those crazy Jolly Moto 3-1s, then let the bidding begin! ;) )

Hey Eric....
I don't think you really want one of those 3 into 1 pipes. Every dyno run that I have seen on the various kinds shows a chop off of power that isn't much good unless you want to gear the bike 5 to 1 and use it to pull stumps in the lower 40! Seriously, the "collector" exhaust gas theory behind 3-1, etc systems doesn't work well in 2 strokes the way it was explained to me. Just a thought.......

Re: 72' Suzuki GT380 first time build (Roller Mockup!)

Whatever he wants to do is cool. Last set of 3-1 pipes for the 380 went for $135 on eBay. I may get a better deal if i bid! lol. I'm aware that 3-1 pipes dont really help with power, but they look and sound hella good and I'm not racing the bike anyways. Either way let me know bro.

Thx

Re: 72' Suzuki GT380 first time build (Update!!!)

Took the time yesterday to clean up my garage and set up a bench so I can take my motor apart in an organized manner. I also polished a few side pieces.

I have a new full motor gasket kit that i am going to use once all parts are cleaned and painted. Will probably order new rings and bearings since ill have the motor open. lots of small washers and parts that seem to fall out everytime i remove something... ??? Im keeping is all separate with zip lock baggies in a hope to make it easier to remember where everything goes. Sry about the crap cell phone pics.

thanks man, I cant wait either! Right now were in the middle of moving and progress has been slow. Im hoping to have the motor all painted up with my next post!

Re: Re: 72' Suzuki GT380 first time build (motor tear down)

Joe, everything is on hold with my buddy's other 380 and the 3-1 pipes. He keeps changing his mind about what he wants to do with it. I'll keep you posted. I got my R5 running and almost ready to ride! First time in 3 years I'll have a runner at the start of the riding season.

Re: 72' Suzuki GT380 first time build (motor tear down)

Haha, that sounds too familiar. I've gone the last 5 years not having a bike running when the weather gets good. This will be my first, even got it all legal yesterday..

Re: Re: 72' Suzuki GT380 first time build (motor tear down)

Scott, thanks for the update on the pipes. Like I said before, no worries, whatever your bro does with them is cool just keep me posted if they're on the market again. I cannot freakin wait to finish this bike up and ride, it consumes my brain... rear swing arm is painted up, fenders are satin black, motor jugs are high temp flat black, sides almost done being polished and almost ready to paint the rest of the motor. I'm going to paint the wheels satin black and the fork lowers the same color as the frame. Thanks again for the input/inspiration!

Re: 72' Suzuki GT380 first time build (motor tear down)

Cool build man , well done, going to look real nice when ya done.
doing a 380 myself, nothing to rad yet but will strip this winter and cut the frame, just wanted to get it running this year so i could ride out, ive just cum to a stop at the moment due to not being able to find a kick start gear in the uk and have had to get one from your side of the pond, waitin on an electronic ign, ive re bored re wired and replace almot ever part on this feckin bike as it was a collection crap garage sale odd bits put on a nice re powder coated frame which is /was the only good thing on the bike, keep up the good work

GT SI,
lookin good man, the motor loose real clean, Im diggin ur seat too. Good luck on the parts search, ebay USA usually has a shit ton of parts for this bike. Make sure you post up some pics on a thread.

macdaddy,
We recently moved so my progress been slowed way down. The bike has came further since last update, I will update as soon as i can. thanks for lookin!

Happy Memorial Day guys!!!!!

Re: 72' Suzuki GT380 first time build (motor tear down)

Finally, im back on the build. Has been slow due to moving. Here are a few updates on progress.

checking and securing my old harness, would buy new but this is an extreme budget build...
photo105.jpg

photo106.jpg

I temporarily install the wiring electrical components back to the stock locations to ensure that all is well with my wiring. Plan to relocate to under the seat.
photo107.jpg

Here is a piece of upholstery foam that I made a filter out of, the cells are pretty close together and probably restrictive so I cut it down pretty thin so help with air flow. I plan on running pods, but for now to get it back running properly, i'll try this out.

This is the bike as it stands now, from last update I have painted the tank and seat (not real happy with it, but its going to stay that way until alittle later) front forks are painted, fenders are matte black, painted the rear swing arm gold/bronze, misc brackets and foot controls are epoxy black, motor heads matte black, and anything else i missed.
photo108.jpg

photo109.jpg

photo110.jpg

I still to buy new brake shoes, front brake cable, petcock gaskets, carb bowl gaskets, paint carbs, 13 1/4" rear shocks, mount ignition key switch, new tires, clean/paint rims black, mount seat, mount all electronics under seat, mount tail light into seat, upholster seat, matte black and wrap the stock exhaust, paint exhaust nuts, I also want to add some tank and tail graphics, and what ever else i forgot to mention... Check it out!
