Re: CB550 Cafe - My first ever build.

Its good to see that i am not the only one who is so well organized

Re: CB550 Cafe - My first ever build.

A very small update on my build.

Basically I have been stripping things down, welding in the seat loop etc. The frame is at the powdercoaters at present and I have just rebuilt the engine and have sprayed it black, so now I have just started the polishing of the aluminium engine covers etc.

My update is my 1st ever lacing of a motorcycle wheel. I have laced 100's of bicycle wheels so it was pretty easy.

The rims have been freshly powdercoated in gloss black (so gloss they look wet) and the hubs have been polished, the stainless spokes are new.

Here is the front wheel.

Re: CB550 Cafe - My first ever build.

Wow, nice wheels, peops pay a fortune to get wheels laced up in the UK, like $90 per hour.
Great skill!
:)

Thanks I am actually in the UK, based in Bristol.

I learnt to lace wheels a long time ago as I collect 70's & 80's BMX's, bike shops in Bristol wanted £50 per wheel to lace, I decided that I must be able to do it myself so I looked on the internet and found out how. The 1st one I laced took me 1 hour, now I can lace, true and tension a bicycle wheel in 10 minutes.

The motorbike wheels took me about 25 minutes each as it was my 1st attempt and I wanted it to go right.

Re: CB550 Cafe - Project Mitch

Ok, I have been working hard on my bike and I have called it Project Mitch as it is in memory of my Wifes Cousin Mitchell who died the day after I bought it, he was 19 years old which is no age to leave us.

This is the frame with the rear hoop welded in, the frame has been powdercoated and I have started putting some bits on.

Here is the engine safely mounted in the rolling chassis. Also put the clip-on bars on.

Here is some of the orange colour going on the bike, not too much orange as it can be very overpowering.

Now to add the new tank to the bike, the tank is from a CB500 twin and it really suits the CB550K.

Now for the seat that I have built, due to the new tank I have had to do some minor modifications but nothing too bad, just a bit of cutting at the front.

Final pictures after a really hard day, here the seat fits better after some modifications, also the Velocity stacks are on and the headlight brackets have been fitted. I have also put the exhaust pipes on but only to seal everything from the elements, I am going to fabricate a 4 into 2 system from the original headers.

This really is fun to build, I am having a blast and because of who it is in memory of it is built with love.

Thanks Script, been busy with personal things and also stripping the engine and rebuilding it. Funny thing, (which I can imagine everyone already knows) is that even though some days you are working for hours on small details and you don't seem to be going anywhere with the build, it is just so damn enjoyable.

My wife said tonight that she hardly see's me any more, I am always in the garage tinkering with something.

Re: CB550 Cafe - Project Mitch

it sure is. i just finished my bike and it was a bitter sweet because i love gee-king out on fixing things i have a 550 supersport thats up next ;)

Re: CB550 Cafe - Project Mitch

Nice work man. Lots of builds going on here where everyones opening engines and rebuilding it all themselves...but if ya dont need to, ya dont need to! I like what you've done with the bike.
So is it running at the moment?

Re: CB550 Cafe - Project Mitch

Not running at the moment oohsam, I have just relocated the new gel battery and fuses, relays etc to the bum stop of the seat unit and I am knee deep in sorting the wiring loom. I am testing circuits and cleaning things up a bit.

Re: CB550 Cafe - Project Mitch

Sweeeeet. The orange is a nice touch; definitely different. I like.

Re: CB550 Cafe - Project Mitch

Some more updates to the build...

Electrics being tidied up a bit and LED idiot lights installed.

Exhausts mocked up and rearsets on (rearsets not finished just rough at the moment and on to enable the rest of the build to continue).

Re: CB550 Cafe - 1st start video

I have today, started the bike for the 1st time. It has been fighting me recently, but with a some great help from Ringo (thanks again for your time and advice Chris, it really is appreciated) the bike has fired up and is running.

It has some tuning to be completed and the wiring needs finishing/tidying, but I am 90% there and very happy. Although my neighbours may not be as happy as the bike is nice and loud.

I hope this video loads.....
