Hey Sean, you have any more luck getting those carbs dialed?

Re: Re: CB550 Cafe - 1st start video on page 4

Just got those carbs dialled Chris, it runs sweet as a nut now thanks to you.

Re: Re: CB550 Cafe - 1st start video on page 4

A quick update on my build, I have now finished the bike and it has had its MOT (British thing to ensure bike is safe to use on the road) and I am running her around to iron a few things out, like making sure nothing falls off and jetting etc.

Here are a couple of recent pictures and no I am not riding in a t-shirt only, my jacket, helmet, gloves and boots are inside the house. :)

Nice bike! I Think your front tire is mounted backwards. No big deal if you never ride in the rain but the Cheng Shen and Metzeler versions of that tread pattern are designed to run the other way to shed water away from the back tire. Just and FYI. I like the matching grips & seat pad. Headlight is cool too.

Cheers

Re: Re: CB550 Cafe - updated pictures

Thanks for the kind comment.

I can assure you though that the front tyre is mounted correctly, it has direction arrows and they are pointing forward.

Re: Re: CB550 Cafe - updated pictures

OK, what brand? It looks like either the Cheng shen or metzeler lasertech, I have had both and they were arrowed to go the other direction, and one time the tire guy mounted it backwards (looked like yours) and I had to make him turn it around. But if the arrow is in the right direction, I stand corrected.

Re: CB550 Cafe - updated pictures

It is a Cougar GP12 tyre, but I will definately check again just to be sure, thanks for the heads up.

Re: Re: CB550 Cafe - updated pictures

That would be a UK tyre I bet, I have never heard of them around here. Maybe just check to see if it is a universal tire and can be mounted front or rear, the universals have to be flipped opposite when on the front vs rear. Cheers

Looking good man. My friend owns those pipes i love the way they sound. Sounds like you are close on the vid, sounds like to me you need to open up your idle screw up a tiny bit.

Re: Re: CB550 Cafe - updated pictures

Looking good. It still sounds a little flat off idle. Try moving the air screws in slightly and see if that perks up the pick up. Sometimes it's necessary to have the slow jets a little rich to get it to pick up cleanly at the bottom end. I'm assuming (never a smart thing to do) that the bike was already warmed up when you took that video. If it was basically stone cold, then all bets are off.

Even on a warm day, a motor needs slight;ly richer mixture to get out of bed and it takes a while to warm up. Less time than when the air is cold, but it takes time.

Re: Re: CB550 Cafe - updated pictures

The engine wasn't too warm, it had only been started quickly once.

As always though there is a little fine tuning to be done on those carbs, but it is almost there.

Re: CB550 Cafe - updated pictures

Looks great! Can you tell me a little about how you did your seat pad? Thanks ;)

Re: CB550 Cafe - updated pictures

Nice. sounds great, What was the problem after all? How many jet sizes did you need to jump since you ran the V stacks?

Stript my friend I went from a 98 standard jet to a 110 jet with the needle jet in the middle slot. Fortunately I had some greatly appreciated help from Chris (Ringo) who has a similar set up as mine.

The problem was basically the jetting was out and the PO had moved the needle jet positions to the top notch. The air mix screws were way out also.

I bench synced it and then vacuum synced it and it is better now.

Re: CB550 Cafe - updated pictures and new video.

She really does, it is an absolute pleasure to ride and she gets so much attention from people.

These older bikes have so much character and I think people like to see a bike that is mostly made of metal up to modern sportbikes that are covered in plastic.

Re: CB550 Cafe - updated pictures and new video.

OHHH yeah people love to see the older bikes, cool man good to hear your enjoying your bike , shot i remember not to long ago you had her all torn apart , its nice to see her all dressed up and running cheers !!!
