Re: SL350 Super Motorsport Project

I installed the tapered bearings the other day and noticed that I chopped off the steering stop - minor F'up. Guess I'll have to weld a new one on, and I already painted it, :-[ doh!

Re: SL350 Super Motorsport Project

Pretty cool man. Looks good so far. Theres a SL175 in the garage now that I told my stepdad he could have, but... I really want to hardtail it instead. Haha.

Re: SL350 Super Motorsport Project

1974 Honda CB450 trees will bolt up to the frame and you could use a dual disc 750 fork. I was thinking I would adapt a 39mm Sportster fork to mine. I've got a set of 39mm trees, just need to pull out the frame and see how the stem fits and what needs to be done. The Sportster parts are cheap and plentiful. Your bike is looking good, like the motor even though I didn't think I would when you first started painting it.

Rider

Thanks! Yeah the 175's were cool. They are kind of scarce too, at least out here in Cali. I'm sure you've seen the SL350 that the guy hardtailed.

Thanks for the info and the compliment. I'm kind of committed to the original front end and brake now since the wheel is laced though. I'll keep the 450/750 info in mind for future use, as I think we have some parts for those bikes around. Yeah I wasn't sure, and I'm still not completely, how that paint would look either. I thinkd once the whole thing is together it will look unique at least.

Re: SL350 Super Motorsport Project

A simple disk brake swap (if you ever want to) would be to just pick up a cb360/cb350four/cb400four front end. 33mm legs with a single disk. Just slip it into your trees and get a master. The cb forks are shorter than your SL ones and its an 18" wheel instead of the 21 so it will lower the front end a few inches as well.

Re: SL350 Super Motorsport Project

Update...I welded the fork stop back on.

I installed the rear shocks, which are Red Wings for a CB/CL 350/450. They are 3/4" shorter than the originals. And the upper spring holders hit the frame on the right side. I may have to do something different. I mocked it up to measure for tires. I can get a 130/80-18 on the rear and a 110/80-18 on the front in Avon Roadriders. That will be 5.4 inches wide rear and 4.4 front. Rear tire height will be 26.5 and front 25.2.

The way its sitting in the photo the rear is raised up 3.5" and the front is unloaded. It's sitting about where I want it when its at ride height. I may need to go with the shorter fork tubes. As it sits they are 1/2" sticking up out of the trees.

Also by bro supplied some sweet racing coils...

Re: SL350 Super Motorsport Project

I guess this isn't really a cafe' racer, but I will race it from bar to bar.

I disassembled the original shocks if anybody wants to see how they come apart. The top mount unscrews. I'm going to see if I can switch the tops with the red wings for more clearance.

Re: SL350 Super Motorsport Project

I picked up some sweet Dupli Color Metal Specks Burnt Copper foo foo cans for the tank, fenders and headlamp... ::)

The stuff had better be good too for $13 per can!

Re: SL350 Super Motorsport Project

OK a small update. I picked up a set of CB900 rear shocks and they will work great. They're the same length as the stock SL shocks. I scrounged some CB750 coil mounts which work perfectly with the Dynatek coils. I also scored some Screamin' Honda orange plug wires on flea bay. I need to clean and paint the battery box and order a new battery. I also found a newer unit to replace the voltage regulator and rectifier.

Re: SL350 Super Moto-Sport Project

Today I installed the ignition advance and a new set of points, installed the rear sprocket, installed the engine and chain. I measured for tire clearance and there is room for a 130/80-18 (5.4 inches wide) tire on the rear. With a 110/80-18 (4.4 inches wide) up front.

I also figured out that I can mount the ignition switch in its original housing on the right side where the horn used to be. I had to switch things around with the new coil mounts. I flipped the coils with the plug terminals pointing up for better clearance. I Cleaned and painted the switch housing, battery box and the rear brake rod. It's coming along good. I'm getting excited about getting it running and on the road for riding season. I can't wait to get some big rubber on this mofo!

Re: SL350 Super Moto-Sport Project

That was one of those days were you felt accomplised and you dont want to stop working on it.

Re: SL350 Super Moto-Sport Project

FWIW, a 130mm tire will likely be wider than that in reality. The measurement is the section sidth of the tire, which is not the same as the actual exterior width. The outside width can vary drastically from manufacture to manufacture. It's likely you won't be able to fit more that a 120 tire in there if you only have a little more than 134mm of clearance...

I'd just hate to see you stuck with a tire you can't use.
