Re: XL350R Tracker - Finished and For Sale!

Re: XL350R Tracker

I plan on wrapping the headers, I reckon the grey wrap will go with the flat black scheme I have planned.

I love Hong Kong, used to visit often.

Re: XL350R Tracker

Why not go with a pale brown or white wrap? Give it a lil more contrast in color? Just an idea :)

Just curious, did you ever venture into the bar scene of Wan Chai on your travels over here? ;)

Re: XL350R Tracker

Hmm, yeah I'm still considering the colours, all I'm sure of at this stage is it will have a lot of matt black. I quite like the idea of white wrap.

I never made it to Wan Chai!

Re: XL350R Tracker

I have a question, hopefully someone can help. If I bought two of the rims below, then gave details to Buchanan's Spokes and got some spokes, do you think I will be able to lace them up to my hubs?

I've never built a wheel before but with the internet at my finger tips I'll give almost anything a go.

Cheers
Julian

Re: XL350R Tracker

I've never done it either, but like you I am mechanically inclined and the internet is a wonderful tool. I spent a half hour on here 3 nights ago then learned how to change out all the shocks on my T100. Then went and did it. I'd Say read it up an go for it.

Re: XL350R Tracker

Cheers Maritime, yep I'm not afraid to give it a go. I'm just not sure how to confirm that those rims will work.

They've got the right number of holes, but I've read that sometimes you need to re-drill the holes to change the angle to match the exit angle of the spoke holes in the hub. That's the bit that I'm not sure about.

Re: XL350R Tracker

AHHH I see, that I can't help with, but I think there is a few wheel building experts here that should chime in for you.

Re: XL350R Tracker

Stick a 440 kit in it, cam, carb, exhaust, you got a pretty damn good motorcycle. (been there done that ;D )

Tell buchanons which hubs and rims you are using and they will drill them for you.

Hi Stout. Here in Australia we have a chain called Clark Rubber. It's exactly like the blue camping mat foam but they had it about 50mm thick. The piece I bought cost $50 - I've got a bit left over though.

I had to glue pieces together to get the mass right at the front. I got some foam spray glue from a craft store and I was really surprised how successful that part was.

Cheers
Julian

Hey Julian. I'm based in Sydney and I'm also thinking of making my own seat. The product you got from clark's, was it just this stuff but thicker? In the photos is just looks like a much stiffer foam and seems more resilient to pressure.

Also, how the hell did you cut the upper piece to fit the tank so well? Looks like a pro job.

Rest of the bike is also looking awesome!! I love the Deus Mono as well. I wont be going single shock on mine as since I don't have the money or skills to convert but that ride has given me heaps of ideas too.

Re: XL350R Tracker

Hi smvirili, yep exactly that stuff but 50mm thick. It's surprisingly easy to shape, I was able to cut it and sand it. I tried a sanding pad on the drill and an angle grinder, but they were both far too aggressive. In the end a craft knife, hacksaw blade, and hand sanding with sandpaper was all I needed.

To make the front piece I was able to spray glue pieces on and then shape further. I cut over-sized triangular pieces, glued them on, then hand sanded. It took some time but wasn't that difficult.

Same thing with the vinyl, wasn't difficult but took time. My hands were cramping from pulling the vinyl by the end.

Cheers for the input, have you got a build thread?

Re: XL350R Tracker

Settle down there craftsman! Thanks a heapa for the tips.
I'm far from this stage though, I haven't even been near the bike since my last post ages ago. Far too busy at uni and my funds are quite low. Been on holidays for the last 3 weeks but spent it back home in Japan after the quakes and all. What's done is done.
I'm going to post some sketches n stuff now to make it look like I'm doing something, at least. Or the DTT demons will eat me at night.

Re seat, Hoping to to have a final soft layer of foam so I can try get some ribs stitched in there. I have a mate who can do some upholstery so she if he can help...

Still a complete baby in deep waters here, so I need everything to be spoon fed. Will certainly drop in to have a perv on your build man. Good luck with everything, hope to see her done soon!

Re: XL350R Tracker

i want to see an update by the time i return from thailand in 11 days :), just flicked through to refresh my memory of your build.

Re: XL350R Tracker

Just stumbled across this thread and she's lookin' sweet!

Man Clark Rubber are ripping you big time! I went to Dyman Foams up here in Brissie and got a strip of some higher density and lower density foam for $23 which I'll be picking up tomorrow... I couldn't find anything in Clark Rubber that felt good to me...

XL350R Tracker

Ok quick phone update, pics to come.

Carbs rebuilt and soda blasted
Frame stripped and painted in matt black 2 pack
Triple tree sand blasted and left raw flat grey
Tank stripped to bare metal
Badges stripped and painted
Bottom end of engine painted satin black
Tank mounts fabricated and tank modified
New petcock
New master cylinder

And I started stripping the top end tonight. Can anyome recommend somewhere to get my cylinder bored to match my piston in melbourne?

Cheers

Re: XL350R Tracker

I've been a bit slack on the updating but progress has been made! It's all back together, lots and lots of details I want to sort out but the immediate goal is to get the carbs jetted correctly and get it legal on the road. It had an inspection this week. I have a big list of things to sort but thankfully it's all time, not money. Some original stuff needs to be bolted back on to get through, but the mechanic was really good and gave me all the advice I need to get it through. So close!

This is what it looked like before I started to strip it again to get it through the RWC inspection:

I still haven't decided what I'm going to do with the wheels, but the 17/21 combo is growing on me for something different so I might rebuild those yet. Who knows!

But yeah, lots and lots of things left to do. But I'd like to be able to ride it while I get all the details right so that's the plan.

Cheers
Julian

Re: XL350R Tracker - It's Alive! Sort Of! With Pics!

Great machine, sweet man! Good job.

Really like the RFVC shininess and the seat came out great aswell. Do you have a rear end picture? curious how that turned out...
