Re: XL350R Tracker - Finished and For Sale!

Re: XL350R Tracker - It's Alive! Sort Of! With Pics!

Cheers guys. Sorry no rear end picture and I've already taken it all off to put a big ugly one off my CRF on there to get through the inspection. Next time for sure.

Re: XL350R Tracker - It's Alive! Sort Of! With Pics!

looking great man!!

Re: XL350R Tracker - It's Alive! Sort Of! With Pics!

I had an XR350, RFVC is a pretty good motor, had a few issues with magnesium clutch cover but removing screw and fitting stud cured the problem
Got my only first place on it (open class 4 stroke)
previous best was a second place in open class two stroke (on an XL185, sold my Yam 400 week before event ::) )
If weather had been nice (instead of pissing down) I would have been eaten alive on XL ;D
Only 'improvement' , get a440 kit in it, lot more 'go' everywhere ;) (doh, I already said that)
Not sure about 21" front wheel, spoke a 19" rim on it?
If you have 36 hole hubs, just about all MX bikes now use a 19" rear wheel so you can get rims reasonable (or buy a used MX wheel from older bike with blown motor?)
19" front and rear would be even more 'different'
You Will need a fork brace if you fit better wheels/tyres (hell, you need one stock, I know how much those forks twist)

Re: XL350R Tracker

I really dig your xr, man great build. the raw metal tank complete the bike well
If you don't mind i've took your pic as a wallpapper

XL350R Tracker - It's Alive! Sort Of! With Pics!

Thanks for the comments guys.

Quick update: it's close to ready for re-inspection. It looks hilarious to be honest, but fingers crossed I'll be on the road soon.

And no problem on the pics, help yourself!

Re: XL350R Tracker - It's Alive! Sort Of! With Pics!

Is on the road and has been ridden to work once! Still getting the jetting right, still need to get my wheels, still nine thousand little things I want to fix...

An you?

Re: XL350R Tracker - It's Alive! Sort Of! With Pics!

about the same mate, just updated my thread with some more info etc

Re: XL350R Tracker - It's Alive! Sort Of! With Pics!

Great job! A really cool looking tracker/mono homage

Re: XL350R Tracker - It's Alive! Sort Of! With Pics!

Hey mate. Dime City send me to this forum and boy am I glad they did. I can't afford a new cafe racer, so I'm contemplating a build myself. For once google wasn't my friend as I didn't find much help in transforming my '88 Honda XL 250...

Your post will get me started. So thank you already.

Can I from time to time pick your brain a bit. I would like to know how much of a handyman you need to be, what tools are necessary and how much should I expect to spend.

As well I would like to know a little bit more about the tank you used (year, size etc.), as that is a big factor in deciding if it's at all possible. I live in Denmark, Europe, so the parts-market isn't as big as in the US og AU.

Thanks in advance!

Morten.

Nice work! Love the simplicity and the raw look. As for lacing the wheels it's not as hard as you think. I found youtube to be very helpful.

Re: XL350R Tracker - It's Alive! Sort Of! With Pics!

Hi Guys

I haven't been here for a while, but progress has been made! Pics coming soon, with new wheels. I'm very happy with how it has turned out, and it is a perfect commuter.

Morten - any time man. Just shoot me a PM and I'll do what I can to answer your questions.

Cheers

It always takes longer than you think it will and cost more than you budgeted.
There are some real good bikes out of Scandinavian countries, I guess you have 3 months of 'night' to work on it?
Pretty sure thats the stock XL tank.
88 XL has a pretty good shape, is it the twin shock or the later mono shock?
Start a build and post a link

Re: XL350R Tracker - It's Alive! Sort Of! With Pics!

The tank is off a CB360 I think. It used to look like this:

The standard tank looked like this:

Re: XL350R Tracker - It's Alive! Sort Of! With Pics!

Doh, I forgot the stock tank was so short and pointy ;D
I was thinking of the mid 70's XL for some reason? ::)

Re: XL350R Tracker - Finished!

So here it is with the new wheels, really happy I went with 17 inch front and rear:

I'll be putting some more pictures up tomorrow.

Re: XL350R Tracker - Finished! With Pics!

And new pictures, and some video. There's more on my blog including the whole build story: http://julianthompson.com/blog/street-tracker-design-project-update-lucky-thirteen/

It's awesome to ride, feel like a total hooligan - which was kinda the goal from the outset. I wanted to build a tough commuter to satisfy the hoon in me. Mission accomplished! It wouldn't suit a tall rider, but fits me perfectly. There's a couple more videos on my blog.

Unfortunately I have to sell it now though, it will be up on ebay this week. It's time to move the family back home to New Zealand. Bit of a shame, but the next one will be even better I reckon. At the very least there will be less swearing.

Thanks for the input into the thread so far, let me know what you think!

Cheers
Julian

Re: XL350R Tracker - Finished!

I like it! Good work! I need to build something like this that I can ride all over the place and still look badass on... or atleast the bike will look badass, lol.
