SR500 build

I like the brass fuel cap. Did you end up using it?

No, it ended up not really fitting the style of the bike. Wanna buy it? lol

Here's a pic of the mostly complete front end. I'm super happy with the way it turned out.

Finally got the frame loop rolled and welded up. It was unusually difficult to get this small tubing rolled to this tight a radius.

Saved these tabs from the SR scrap to use for the aluminum under pan.

Ready to weld on the tabs

Notice how the pan is recessed just enough so you cant see it from the sides or back.

Finished. Just need to clean it up.

Been pretty busy with work so no time to work on the bike. I have done a few things recently though.

Wiring: ugg! 35 year old wiring: double ugg.

Bought a brand new round slide 36 Mikuni and K&N filter.

Relocated the ignition switch from the top triple clamp down below the fuel tank with a simple weld on bracket I made.

1377092_10151964355455791_241275967_n.jpg

Need to fill that ignition switch hole.

1376407_10151964363095791_1412221162_n.jpg

My son came up with this idea. First I had to grind the tabs for the strap off.

Wish I had a lathe. Hand bomb machine work lol.

1450864_10151980934660791_1717340749_n.jpg

Like a glove. Theres an o-ring under the watch for vibration resistance.

1452138_10151980935420791_379325387_n.jpg

Made a steel cover, drilled and tapped a hole.

1378452_10151980935780791_1313696007_n.jpg

A little paint and done.

The business end. I think it looks amazing.

A friend of my sons came over and shot some pics of he and I.

Like this one the best!

Tail piece is also taking shape. The small flange at the bottom will be gone once it's turned into a rolled edge. (I'm not doing this part by the way. Not enough skills or equipment lol)

Stunning work mate ........................ keep the detailed pix coming, inspiration for us mere mortals ! ;)

Love where this is going. Great job on the Timex, although I hate seeing watches/clocks on bikes as it's contrary to why I ride!

Thanks beachcomber! But you know all it takes is a bit of imagination and vision as to where you want the project to go. I don't have any special tool or machinery, just a tiny garage and good mechanical skills. I very rarely use a machinist except for rotating bits for obvious reasons lol. Making and modifying all the smaller parts just takes a few tools and some patience.

Wahoo: I'm feel the same, but we needed something to fill that hole and my son liked the watch idea. I was originally going to put a second billet cap to match the gas cap in the space as a block off. It may still go that way because I'm not sure the watch will handle the vibration of the big thumper lol.

I "borrowed" the tail piece before it was finished so I could do a bit of mounting mock up and figure out wiring routing etc. Pretty simple front mount using the modified stock rubber bumper, the stock hold down washer, a spare engine cover dowel as a spacer and one small hole in the seat pan. Works slick and easy. Now I need for weld a tab under the rear section for a simple two bolt setup.

Since we are not running the stock gauges and I needed to fill two holes on the top triple clamp, I put together a couple of LED idiot lights.

1425653_10152008414120791_2111512782_n.jpg

Neutral light and, well Im not sure what the red one will be yet lol.

1460250_10152008415155791_439416526_n.jpg

Battery box mock up. It only hangs down about 1.5 inches under the frame.

Finally got the rear rim back from powder coating. The start of building the wheel.

1454809_10152019827400791_349814564_n.jpg

Buchanan stainless spokes and nipples are REALLY nice.

1468618_10152019829275791_2015273443_n.jpg

Done. Turned out beautiful. Just need the tire mounted. Productive day in the garage today!

Fabbed up a clean and simple chain guard.

Wow, awesome build! I had been thinking about using a KLR rear wheel on my XT (for the cush drive and the disc) but wasn't sure if it would work. Keep up the good work!

Yes I do, how did you know? :)

How much clearance do you have between the caliper and the spokes?

As I'm sure you know, using a 4 piston caliper with a spoked wheel is normally impossible....with the stock front end that is. Since I used a later (and wider) sport bike fork there is plenty of clearance. (about 1/4 inch)

Awesome, thanks! I was planning on running xs750 tubes in the stock trees on my xt500 but your setup looks killer so I may eventually do something similar.

Also keep in mind that these forks came off a 600lb motorcycle and are now on a 300lb motorcycle so spring and damping changes will be in order.
