Suzuki GR650 - back to work...

Re: Suzuki GR650- Opinions needed please

First off Rich, I know... "Opinions are like assholes, everybody's got one, and everyone elses stinks" but I am going to suggest some things, so take it or leave it.
If you do go with the stickers, don't clear over them. You'll kick youself later when you want to change.
I think one long sticker would look better than two smaller ones so close together.
Back when I was debating on filling my tank badge mounts or leaveing them, I had found this pic and was going to copy them. This guy used an aluminum strip with two holes and mounted them instead of the factory badge. I saved the pics but for the life of me can not remember who's build it was. Still think it looks sharp.
I realize the pics are small, hope it make sence.

Re: Suzuki GR650- Opinions needed please

personally i think the stickers in that location would detract from the look of the tank. if you are only trying to cover the badge holes, i really like the idea above /\ you could even have the AL waterjet cut to say "suzuki" or even etched. good luck

Re: Suzuki GR650- Opinions needed please

See? That's why I love this place.......

The decals are off the table - Hoosier, you gave me some great ideas. Thanks!!

Re: Suzuki GR650- Opinions needed please

Much prefer the AL strip idea. Seems to better fit the class, style, that you have established with your first version of the bike.

Re: Suzuki GR650- Opinions needed please

Yep, another in favour of the strip, but I reckon the cut out letters would be spot on, let the tank colour come through where the letters would be...

Re: Suzuki GR650- Opinions needed please

My unsolicited opinion....Make your own logo/emblem/thingamijiggy.
So.....
1. Cut yourself your 'strip' from stainless flat stock, say .180" and shape it to suit.
2. Being a machinist yourself, I bet you could manage cut a recess in the face @1/2 depth
3. Now bend it so it follows the contours
4. Your logo goes in the recess in the face of the strip, lay it in really smooth
5. Envirotex. It's a pourable clear resin used for furniture, especially tables. Think massively thick clear and you have the idea. I've used it on an outdoor table that spend 12 years in the outdoors and if you wipe it down is still nice and shiny.

Just a thought.....
(bigger tank looks a treat by the way)

Re: Suzuki GR650- Opinions needed please

I filled the badge dents on mine and used a S.U.Z.U.K.I sticker and cleared over it. This is the third position I tried before I liked the look

How would you get the clear to follow the contour?

Re: Suzuki GR650- Opinions needed please

Haha...oops, let that bit out.....

So you actually want to pour the resin BEFORE forming to shape, though I doubt there would be too awfully much bending needed. Just catch it while the resin is only mostly hardened. Use wax paper to handle it and you should be golden. The other thing you can do for a non-flat surface is restrict the off flow with packing tape and actually cast the curve initially. More work and potentially messy but can certainly be done.

Re: Suzuki GR650- Opinions needed please

I agree, the stickers kinda detract from the look. Btw, is that a new front fairing??

also, i have a feeling that if you bend the emblem to fit tank and then fill it with that resin it would fill up nicely. there isnt too much bend there. or you could do a few thin coats. would look really trick with the clear coat. you could even take a strip of metal and mask it off to paint the "suzuki" in the tank color. million things to do. still i think it sill look best to stick to the basic shape of the old badge area.

Re: Suzuki GR650- Opinions needed please

Whoa.....thanks fellas. I've been a little......"sporadic" lately and am just now seeing all this.

Swagger: As always, your input is worth its weight in gold.......no, wait......dammit, you know what I mean! Thanks man.

Crescent: Same for you (in a good way as well). I wish I had the same creative ideas as both of you guys.

Toast: Same fairing my man! But with almost twice the gas tank behind it, it does look different .......

Thanks to all you guys. I appreciate the support right now.

Re: Suzuki GR650- tank mounts welded

So some of the Indy crew came out over the weekend - there was some welding, drinking, cutting, eating, etc that needed done. My phone is giving me fits, so I'll be posting one pic at a time.......

First up - Mothgils welding up some tank mounts to the GR:

Re: Suzuki GR650- tank mounts welded

The front mounts needed washers welded to the frame (I've had them press fit for a while now.......):

Re: Suzuki GR650- tank mounts welded

Then the tank pad needed to be raised since the 850 tunnel is considerably taller than the 450 tunnel:
