Re: The Amalgam: Cb450 frame, cbr500r motor. What could go wrong???
Been busy with metal work, been working on boxing the bottom rear motor mounts, caping the tubing where I cut the frame, and removing tabs. Have a fair amount more to do. I also started figuring out the battery box.
Re: The Amalgam: Cb450 frame, cbr500r motor. What could go wrong???
Time has been at a premium lately, managed to finish everything but the top radiator mount, and the skateboard wheel for the chain. I imagine tomorrow I can get that done, along with all the sanding and prep to JB weld where I want to work areas smooth. I think I may do more than originally planned, especially since I need it to photograph well in close ups, and i'm sure the frame is going to be scrutinized at shows. I also like to take the time to even make things pretty that won't be seen since I'll know it's there.
Re: The Amalgam: Cb450 frame, cbr500r motor. What could go wrong???
Has anyone used a skateboard wheel on the chain? I'm curious how fast it wears. I think I'm going to set it to just make contact with the chain, no sprung tension, but I am going to have the wheel alxe bolt ride in a slot so I can manual adjust it for wear. Thoughts?

a wheel to tack up slack ?
yessir i use a skateboard wheel up under the bottom run of chain by the swinger pivot
you will need to move the swingarm to the 3 axis alignment position, adjust the chain there with minimal slack
then with the shocks back on you can bring the roller up to remove slack at full droop
then the last step is pull of the shock again and move swinger you will most likely have a tight spot on the way up and have to back off on the position
if you dont perform the last check you may just melt the bearings and roller
...wear is not an issue at all you want the softest you can get, a hard one will just be noisy
Re: The Amalgam: Cb450 frame, cbr500r motor. What could go wrong???
Waiting to get me wheels before I can do much more. I went with 18's so there will be a little more trail, but given how much lighter the bike will be I think the additional straight line stability won't really sacrifice anything on cornering. Oh, and just for a good chuckle, I order the correct center and kickstand for the bike from fleabay, and had a good laugh mounting the kickstand. Looking at photos I'm sure someone will figure out why.
Left to do:
Weld top radiator mount
Cap old downtube
fit and modify skateboard wheel
gas tank (not my job, thank god!)
Rearset linkage
fit center stand
fabricate plate for 3rd motor mount (easiest of the 3)
Go for a ride?
I'm hoping to have final mock up done by the end of January, then by Marth 1st have it refinished and rebuilt.
My son had a horrible case of the same yesterday... I hear its a wide spread tummy bug going round, but with holiday food everywhere... people are thinking food poison... it's not.

Yes, bad stomach bug going around here too. It kind of went around 2 weeks ago, thought I was safe. Apparently not. Yes, new stainless spokes, obviously aluminum rims, and powdered hubs. The rear hub was cleaned up internally, and new bearings all around.
Re: The Amalgam: Cb450 frame, cbr500r motor. What could go wrong???
Bringing this back from the dead. So a lot of changed, and will be going in a completely different direction.I sold off the front end and wheels since I decided they didn't fit what I really wanted. A new front end and wheels should make their way onto it this week, definitely by the weekend. At that point the only major hurdle left is the gas tank.
Did a little math that got me excited. I think the current iteration of this bike will weigh in around 270 dry. The 500r engine is no powerhouse, but with that weight I am thinking mini rocket ship ;D. And that front drum should be plenty of stopping power as long as I'm not looking for miracles from it!
