The "Bomber" GL1100 project - added video

I'm building a 75 GL1000 right now. Great build btw. I was thinking about running the bike without the timing belt covers. Any experience with this?

None personally but have seen several done on the NGWclub forum. No reported issues and many have a lot of miles running without.... but I should think one well placed pebble kicked up from the front wheel would be very very bad. And I have just that kind of luck! ::)

as long as you have a fork brace like he does there are 0 problems. if you do not owver the forks will flex way way to much and you will end up in a serious tank slap after coming out of turn

ooh ya to avoid this you can also run thicker oil and springs... i run progressive springs, 15 weight oil and dropped the bike in front 1.5 inches, this eliminates travel distance and cuts down on the flex... never the less i still machined a fork brace just have not put it on yet

Hey Joe,
He was asking about the timing belt covers and I think you jumpped ahead to running without a front fender... that would allow the pebble to be kicked up into the belts like I described.
Just to clear things up... I think ;D

Wow, Nice work! I can't believe I didn't see this sooner. Love the way it sounds when you rev it up.

Yeah, I dropped the fender and it jumps around like crazy especially over 100. I've got a blown fork seal which I'm waiting on parts for, so I figured that was it, but I will work on making a brace. I'll just hold on tight for now.

Thanx a lot. I just think it would look sick to see those cam gear spinning. Someone suggested a plexi cover, but then I feel like I'd need a light source. Taking parts off is much less work and I've got so much to do already.

Thanks, oughta hear it in person! They have a belt whine that sounds like a blower drive, and those Sporties take-off have a mellow rumble.

Yep, get a fork brace like Joe said, you won't regret it. They are all over e-bay.

I realize this is an old thread, but what happened to all the pictures?
*GROAN* I had them all hosted on a photo sharing sight called "WebShots" that went belly-up. Actually they sold out to Halmark Greetings... who wanted to charge me a monthly fee to keep my album active now ironicly called "Smile" 1029 photo links scattered across the internet since 2005 now GONE.
I still can help somewhat... started a photobucket acount and have loaded some on there. Let me know if there is anything in particular you want to see, I still have them on my 'puter or backed up on CD's

Ha what a shit show! the joys of the internet, you never know what is going to change.

I love what can be done with a big long haul cruiser, its so wrong yet so right. I keep my eyes peeled for an old goldwing all the time that needs help.

I love what you did with it.

THANKS (I think) Ha-Ha
But it's not fuckin pink... it's PURPLE.... Adjust your monitor for Christs sake. ;)
Actually looks deeper in person. I get a lot of good comments and some ribbing on the color combo. Maybe I'll redo the tins someday. Here is a better match to what it looks like in real life, at least on my monitor settings.

That was two years later and she is startin to show some wear... She's still my designated daily ride weather permitting. This summer I picked up an Emgo Viper Fairing as my daily commute went from 3 miles to 40 round trip.
