The "Bomber" GL1100 project - added video

Re: The "Bomber" my GL1100 project

Bearings and seals replaced, Wheels are mounted, all brakes are DONE! (whew) New pads, new front M/C and rebuilt Rear works fine. I bench bled both to ease the pain before they were installed but still had a fail amount of air and bleeding until I got clear fluid. Feel nice and firm, and Later, I plan on treating her with new hoses. Want the braided Stainless ones I have found but they're over $150 a set

Took her off the center stand and pushed her out of the corner into the open garage bay... I think I'll sleep good tonight!

Re: The "Bomber" my GL1100 project

Now that looks fantastic. Congratulations. You are not far off now. When I get time I'll go back and catch up on the thread.
Keep up the great work. I'm lovin it.

Re: The "Bomber" my GL1100 project

Thanks for the props all!
Got the carbs and plenum all apart, rebuild kit, distilled water and lemon juice in hand, then discovered #4 float bowl is cracked. Looks as if it was full of water and froze when stored outside by the PO. :-[
Good news is it and #1 are the same, where #2 and 3 are each unique, and harder to come by. I located another and it should be on it's way shortly.
Minor set back really as I can continue cleaning and rebuilding them and install the replacement bowl when it gets here. Might even polish the 4 vacuum covers and bowls while I am waiting . ;D

Re: The "Bomber" my GL1100 project

well Hoosier, you are putting my poor girl to shame, Nice work. I am totally going to have to stripe her down over the winter and polish and paint whatever I can. I would love it if you were coming to the W gather ing to meet the Bomber and yourself in person.

Cheers,

Maritime.

I will definately be attending future Meet-n-Greets both from NGW and DTT can't wait!
Here is what I have been doing lately.... CARBS!
I was an Automotive Tech from the late '70's till the early '90's and I have rebuilt countless Quadrajets, Dual-jets, Carter AFB's and even a few Holley (Motorcraft) 4160's and 4150 Double pumpers so I am aquainted with their ins and outs.
Carb on bottom right was first to be stripped down and cleaned, a lot of engine degreaser, toothbrush, toothpick, carb cleaning spray, and a boil in 1/2 gallon of distilled water with about a cup lemon juice. Then a final inspection of all passages and carb cleaner spray down followed by compressed air.
Here it's ready to re-assemble.

This is where we are tonight, two down, one soaking after the second scrubbing befor disassemble, and the last one on deck. I used disposable cupcake tins to keep the parts sorted. Top one for dirty parts on tear-down then transfered each part to a second tin once cleaned and ready for installation.

Re: The "Bomber" my GL1100 project

Mmmmm.... Sportster mufflers and early GL1000 headers…
Got the take-off mufflers for .99 cents on e-bay (nobody bid against me) gotta love those Harley guys! Also found the headers at cyclepsycho.com . They actually line up pretty good with some short 1 ¾” adapters right off the shelves at the autoparts store. They fit over the headers and into the mufflers. Just fab up some short aluminum straps for mounts to tie them to the original mount holes and we are in bid-ness!

Re: The "Bomber" my GL1100 project

Lookin sexy. The bomber is gonna haul some serious tail.

Re: The "Bomber" my GL1100 project

That's so clean man....very cool job!
Can you just raise the mufflers and mount them directly to the tabs? Maybe rework your adapters to suit?

Re: The "Bomber" my GL1100 project

that is the same plan we have for the pipes i got a set of take off sporty muflers here in the shop looks great man

Really thought long and hard about that myself. I would have liked them to follow the frame lines a little more. Problem is they would dump right at the shock boots. One of the original boots were melted just from the heat of the brake rotor, so I was concerned about the exhaust being that close to the replacements.

Re: The "Bomber" my GL1100 project

Hmm...I see what you're saying.....any room to splay them out away from the shock an inch or so? Pro'lly not or you woulda thought of it....

Well, regardless...can I come over for dinner so I can eat off that engine?

Re: The "Bomber" my GL1100 project

:D ;D :D
Lets see how it looks after some miles on her.
Still gotta cover it up with those carbs, one last one to reassemble.

Re: The "Bomber" my GL1100 project

Here is where we are tonight... on my way to go polish the carb tops then install the carb rack this weekend. Then route the cables, re-mount turn signals and tail light that I already bought, battery, coils, and remainder of wiring connections... then fluids to get her fired up for the first time (hopefully!) next comes ride and sort out the bugs... Faux tank and side covers painting are last on the list but the purple and black paint is bought :)

Re: The "Bomber" my GL1100 project

oops...almost asked how it sounds with the sporty bullets on there...hehehe
