The "Bomber" GL1100 project - added video

Re: The "Bomber" my GL1100 project

I love it man! thanks for the pics... that is just awesome... i think the smooth leather seat needs something, have you thought about adding some button pins to it? everythign on the bike has ridges or shapes to it and the seat is the only thing that is perfectly smooth... just an idea, love the badge!

Re: The "Bomber" my GL1100 project

Hmmm... hadn't thought about it that way reayy, Maybe a strap across with a aluminum buckle on either side, like was OEM on the CB's, I'll give it some thought.

Oh and one more thing while I am here...

SHE'S A RUNNER!!!

No leaks, all 4 header pipes get hot, doesn't sound bad at all. It was kinda rough and had a couple of back fires through the plenum at first... I need to keep the choke out a little for the idle to stay about 1000RPM
Cooling fan kicked on while I was rechecking for fuel leaks and scared the CRAP out of me...
She is charging about 13V at 1200RPM but give her a litttle throttle and it went to 14.6 then settled at 14.2
Responded well to the throttle and gave her a few quick short burts to 3000-4000 or so.

Only down side was the temp gauge didn't work. But I'll take that, I wondered if I'd have issues with it because I had to heat the housing with a torch to get a broken bolt out early in the build... but I got a spare sending unit to swap out.

Now I need to figure out how to post that 60 second video I shot of the second and third start-ups on my cell phone. It's so tiny I don't know how well it will turn out on here.

Re: The "Bomber" my GL1100 project

Congrats Hoosier!

You can post it on Youtube, i dont think too many people care if it's a little grainy.

Thanks guys, Going a purple with black around the accent reliefs, maybe a thin silver pinstripe at the seam. Similar to what I had mocked up earlier but not so bold as it was in the black-n-white rendering.

Drilled and tapped the rear holes in the frame horns with a 10mm x 1.25 tap to screw in my Dime City turn signals. The studs were long enough to attach the tail light bracket to and then the mounting nut that came with them...

Looking good man! Where did you get the taillight setup? I am looking for one of a similar shape.

Re: The "Bomber" my GL1100 project

congrads!!!!!! that is like the cubby time when you finally get her fired up! man you kicking my ass! i got to get on the wing!!!! got harley after harley coming in for work i have not got to play with my own stuff!

Got it from Cycle-X, here is there lighting page... http://www.cyclexchange.net/Lighting%20Page.htm

Thanks guys... and yea, I am pleased with the sound Swagger. She is going to need some carb adjustments and get settled in but she idles and revs.
Tried to up load a small video on a new youtube account, but I hear no sound and the link didn't work yet. Does it take a while before it's "Activated"? Maybe I need to re-load it, or take a real video with my camera instead of the phone :D

Here...

Re: The "Bomber" my GL1100 project

It takes a while for mine to activate too.

The video is cool - bummer about the sound though.

Re: The "Bomber" my GL1100 project

Last night I thought it might have been back firing through the carbs because it was lean from not having an air filter on so I blew out the old one and installed it until my new one shows up from cheapcycleparts.
She smoothed out some at idle, and I adjusted the idle stop screw so I could push the choke all the way in with no backfiring to about 900 rpm. Let her sit and run like that for awhile then it began to boil over in the overflow, fan was running but she was filling the overflow with boiling water quick!
I shut it down and turned the key back on to let the fan run. The fan was killing my new battery so I bumped the charger up to 40A. Once the boiling in the overflow tank stopped and the level started to drop. I hit the starter and the fan quit working!!!
Somehow I toasted the temp sensor because I jumper it out before the fan runs.... and it still boils over...
DAMNIT ALL TO HELL!

Re: The "Bomber" my GL1100 project

Yea, and there won't be any sound for a while... :(

Tonight I drained the coolant with the intent to check the T-stat, water pump, and change the Fan temp switch and the Temp gauge sending unit. First was remove the cover for the water pump. While the engine was on the bench I had this same cover off to check the impeller, side / side and up / down play in the bushing and slop on rotation. Everything felt tight so I buttoned it back up.
Tonite, same thing... but when I hit the starter button the impeller didn't spin. ::)
Off came the hoses, radiator, fan, drain the new oil and then the front engine cover. There it was , the water pump was siezed tighter than a Nuns Puss! It's shaft was sheared at the tabs that fit into the engine oil pump. I got out my flashlight and peered into the hole where the tabs engauge the oil pump drive and the end of THAT shaft is sheared as well, just past the oil pump rotor.
DAMN DAMN DAMN!!!! I was able to turn this engine over by hand since the day I bought it so I know it was already sheared then, otherwise I doubt if I could have spun it with my bare hand twisting the cranks timing belt pulley.
Now I need a water pump AND a shaft the runs the length of the engine that drives the front and rear oil pumps (yes, two oil pumps).
Checking out the Honda and Haynes service manuals, exploded Diagrams and I still do not know if I have to split the case halves to replace the shaft or not. It states in the engine dissassembly that when the cases are split, the rear pump just pulls off the shaft and you can remove the front pump and shaft as an assembly... but I can not see just yet how the shaft is driven, it must be tied to the crankshaft somehow... so I have yet to see if it will just pull out from the front or not.
Don't know if I just need parts, or yet ANOTHER engine. With the seized original, the seized one that was in the parts bike, and now this, I am on my 3rd engine.

Re: The "Bomber" my GL1100 project

ahhh man! not at all what i wanted to hear! the water pump is a easy replacement but the oil pump... that is a bit more involved (from what i read have not done it myself) before junking man check goldwing docs and of course some of those guys on naked goldwing i am sure will have some imput, blows my mind how much they know about this scoot. if there is ANYTHING that i can do please let me know!

Re: The "Bomber" my GL1100 project

Hang in there man, I bet this is the last hump to get over and you'll be dialed!

Re: The "Bomber" my GL1100 project

Here is the carnage
Back side of the Waterpump showing the broken shaft.

and the oil pumps shaft that drives the waterpump..

Here is the parts breakdown
In the oil pump pic I am down to #'s 5, 6, and 8. The broken piece in the center is what I need to replace, the shaft #2.

I need to pull the engine back out, to also remove the rear engine cover to gain access to bolt # 20 in order to pull the shaft out the front and replace it.
Then I can replace the waterpump, they are still available from my local dealer for $160 total. Bike Bandit lists them for $147 plus shipping so it's a wash. I will need to buy the waterpump seals, but when I bought the gasket set for the engine refurb I got an entire engine set so I have the gaskets and o-rings I need to pull this off still in the box.
MAJOR set-back for the riding season this year, but not a show stopper. The guy I sold my "old Battle-Axe" parts bike to has offered to tear down it's seized engine and give me the oil pump shaft out of it.

Re: The "Bomber" my GL1100 project

Just an update so you guys don't think I am "takin the dirt nap" or anything...
Been scrounging parts.
Since the oil pump shaft was sheared that drives the water pump a week of watching Good old e-bay and this came up for sale. I set my highest bid and waited for the auction to end... long 6 days!
But in the end nobody bid against me so for $9 plus $10 shipping I am now waiting on the delivery of a complete low milage set of front and rear oil pumps, sprocket, chain, and the shaft I need. Basically EVERTHING in the exploded diagram I posted instead of just the broken shaft.

Saving my pennies for a new waterpump that is still available OEM, about 1/2 way there after 3 weeks. I've got the o-rings and gaskets needed left over from buying a complete engine set when I did the headgaskets / bench top reseal of the engine before I installed it. Once I get all the parts I think I am going to need, the engine will come back out and torn back down... should go a lot faster this time ::)

Slight depression set in with the realization I will miss this riding season... but things are looking up again.

Re: The "Bomber" my GL1100 project

What a steal on the pump assembly! Glad to hear your making progress again!
