Re: The "Bomber" my GL1100 project
Yea, and there won't be any sound for a while...
Tonight I drained the coolant with the intent to check the T-stat, water pump, and change the Fan temp switch and the Temp gauge sending unit. First was remove the cover for the water pump. While the engine was on the bench I had this same cover off to check the impeller, side / side and up / down play in the bushing and slop on rotation. Everything felt tight so I buttoned it back up.
Tonite, same thing... but when I hit the starter button the impeller didn't spin. :
Off came the hoses, radiator, fan, drain the new oil and then the front engine cover. There it was , the water pump was siezed tighter than a Nuns Puss! It's shaft was sheared at the tabs that fit into the engine oil pump. I got out my flashlight and peered into the hole where the tabs engauge the oil pump drive and the end of THAT shaft is sheared as well, just past the oil pump rotor.
DAMN DAMN DAMN!!!! I was able to turn this engine over by hand since the day I bought it so I know it was already sheared then, otherwise I doubt if I could have spun it with my bare hand twisting the cranks timing belt pulley.
Now I need a water pump AND a shaft the runs the length of the engine that drives the front and rear oil pumps (yes, two oil pumps).
Checking out the Honda and Haynes service manuals, exploded Diagrams and I still do not know if I have to split the case halves to replace the shaft or not. It states in the engine dissassembly that when the cases are split, the rear pump just pulls off the shaft and you can remove the front pump and shaft as an assembly... but I can not see just yet how the shaft is driven, it must be tied to the crankshaft somehow... so I have yet to see if it will just pull out from the front or not.
Don't know if I just need parts, or yet ANOTHER engine. With the seized original, the seized one that was in the parts bike, and now this, I am on my 3rd engine.
