The Free CB750 - Project Zoidberg

OK... so I just completed a 270 mile round trip to pick up a titled and (supposedly) complete 1982 CB750. Did I mention it was free? A friend of mine was partway through the project when he got a contract to work in Malaysia for a few years.

He signed the title over to me this afternoon and we packed it into the back of the wagon.

Everything appears to be present and there is a fresh-in-package set of wheel and steering bearings. There are also two sets of carbs and a brand new bikini fairing. Also present are a set of mini-apes and a sissy bar.

More pics to come later...

OK... I finally got some time to myself and I tore apart the rest of the CB that wasn't already in parts.

I've got a nice stack that's ready for blasting and then paint or powder. I also ended up with a box full of hardware that's going to need cleaning. I haven't torn into the engine yet, but that will be coming up pretty soon.

Also, what purpose do these serve? They're rubber blocks that were inside the rear hub.

Ran into a couple of problems, though. Not sure how to remove this bearing race from the lower triple. Any pointers? Also, how do I separate the fork tubes? I've removed the allen head bolt from the bottom, unscrewed the top, and all the internals have been removed (I think).

Once you've got the seals out, and the circlip out of the forks you should be able to just compress them and then slide them quickly back out and they should separate

There's a bit of rust inside the forks, so I didn't see the circlip. I'll look again, thanks.

Yeah I had to dig through some rust on my last set its hard to see

Hi, Those rubber blocks are the Cush Rubbers, just replace them with new one's as they're probably worn. There job is to take the shock out of the chain drive so you get a smooth transition to drive at the rear wheel(a type of shock absorber).

Regards

Nice deal. As Paddlesat said the rubber in the rear hub is to cushion the chain drive.

What is your plan for the build? It will be interesting to see it evolve.

Thanks, Sonic. Uppers and lowers are now separated. Took over an hour, though. They were so corroded, they both ended up breaking and I had to use a pair of flathead screwdrivers.

The plan for the bike is go with a bike of an adventure theme. Depending on how much $$$ I have laying around I may go with more or less. We'll see. Nothing set in stone just yet.

Sonrier - when I pulled that lower neck race, I cut it very carefully with a dremel after spending two hours trying other methods - just enough on either side that it'll crack when you whack it with a screwdriver on the business end of a hammer.

If you fuck it up I'm about to go pick up another one. :)

I tried a punch and hammer and blow torch for about 30 minutes before busting out the Dremel. Problem solved in about 5 minutes.

I shaved the lower triples and removed the casting marks while I was there...

I'm going to see if I can convince my neighbor to use his lathe to turn down my fork lowers. I'm looking to remove the fender mounts.

Engine tear down started today. No big surprises just yet, but the oil does smell like someone lit it on fire at some point. The little surprises were how loose some of these bolts were. Glad I didn't just leave this alone.
