The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- New Electrical

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- Road Worthy

Yeah it was some guy's cb550 over on sohc4, I believe. Really nice engine rebuild and happened on the first ride.

But you used high-heat paint eh? Well...I would heed teazer's advice and pull the valve cover then. :(

Edit: hell I guess it could just be poor prep? Engine cleaner under the paint? Something that would outgas like with powder...but when the engine heated up? I don't know, I'm just throwing stuff out here...

I did rebuild the motor. What would cause the starve? The motor has been on about a dozen times.

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- Road Worthy

Hmm, yeah didn't mean to sound the alarm. I guess I would look to paint prep first. If the highest temp was well below that 500*, you could have residual degreaser/cleaner under the paint.

Ringo, you didn't sound the alarm, buddy. The bubbling paint did!

Is there any possible way that idling for a long time would do that? I know it's slim but I just want to rule that out completely.

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- Road Worthy

Hah, well I tend to think the worst before reason sets in. Right after I sold my 550, I thought the new owner over-revved it and floated a valve. After setting tappet clearance, he took it out for a spin and came back on 3 cylinders. I grilled him on what he did during the ride (poor kid ;D ) and we set about taking the valve cover off, only to discover one of the tappet adjuster nuts had not been tightened and worked its way loose during the ride, preventing the exhaust valve from opening at all! Simple solution, smack in the head, and problem solved.

Anyways, being air-cooled, I guess it depends on how long it runs while stationary. I would usually hook up a box fan or two if I was going to be idling it for any length of time in the shop. I don't think that paint would bubble from just heat alone though. That guy I mentioned on the sohc4 site had no bubbling with the same paint, with fairly extreme temperatures. The paint just turned from silver to a sickly brown. Definitely wouldn't hurt to pull the cover though, seeing as it's all of a 5 minute job.

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- Road Worthy

Did you have high temp primer under paint (or did you use primer?)
I never primer engines, degrease and engine paint only

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- Road Worthy

I did use primer and it was high temp also.

Had a less stressful night last night with the bike. Got to the source of the shorting. It was the oil and neutral indicator connections under the left side cover. I replace the shoddy old shielding with a new one and it was perfect. Such a simple solution to a massively frustrating problem.

I was having trouble starting the bike. Took a lot out of the battery. I ended up having to put it on the charger for a jump. Couldn't figure out why it was so tough to keep running. That's until I realized I had the idle screws turned out way too far. Cranked them in to 1.5 turns and boom, thing started running. Took it around the blow a few times. It felt pretty nice! Have to re-jet as the 1/2-3/4 throttle still bogs a little bit but it's MUCH better than before. That being said, I think my battery is shit again. It's clearly not big enough to continue to trouble shoot these problems. I had it charged last night after working on getting the bike started and even with the 15 minutes of riding and turning it on 2-3 more times after I was done, this morning when I came out to fire it up again... nothing. Wouldn't even crank one time. I'll have to look in to that now that I'm getting everything worked through and running.

Time for some pics:

Hey dudes.

Busy weekend, as I'm sure it was for most of you guys. Got a new roof on my place, lots of food and good times with friends & family. Got a little bit of work done on the hog but it was important stuff.

Got the speedo magnet fab'd up. Seems to work fine but it's at km/h so I have to figure out how to change that.

Both the sets indicators are working as well as the brake light:

Finally got the rear brake pretty worked through. I flipped the actuator and added a stopper to the foot control. Last thing I need to do is add a return spring but it seems to be working fairly well so far.

I'm having some charging issues or the battery is shot. I'll give it a full charge, start the bike and run it for about 20 min. Go back to start it and.... nothing. I have to look in to that next.

Also, does anyone know if your front turn indicators have to be on as running lights?

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- Road Worthy

Front sigs do not have to be on. Just cap off the running light wires. Nice work so far, getting closer everyday.

Thought that the 3ohm coils might be too much for the charging system so i put in a call to Dybatek to confirm. That would be Affirmative. Explains the battery draw.

Dynatek recommended an inline ballast resistor of 1 or 1.5 ohms. Seems to be the cheapest solution and the guy said there is no adverse effects on the system.

Although Dynatek guy said that 3ohms was too much, I went to another shop and spoke them and realized I forgot to tell the guy at Dynatek that I was running the DynaS also. With the DynaS 3ohms is the recommended coil. I swapped out the battery and got a tender (on sale at CycleGear for $15!) and new plugs. Seems to be running pretty well!

Also, had the idle jets out WAY too far. Turned them all the way in and then out a half turn. That seems to be a decent start and it seems like 1 turn out is where I should be. I'm going to buy an Emgo Synching tool soon.

Found out about a guy who will take care of all the paper work to register the bike for $25. Seems to be worth the price of admission to me. I have to have the CHP check it out but then after that... this guy takes everything to the DMV and gets it all taken care of. Going to try to do that sometime next week. Can't believe I am actually at that point!!!!

Here's a small vid of it starting up and the tach working.

I cant tell you how amazing this little, prison made piece of metal makes me feel. Over 3 years (and its still not "done") to finally have this thing on the road.

Decided to ride this thing to school tonight. A friend took this shot from her car:

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- GOT THE TITLE BUDDY!!!!

Been riding around a bunch. Had to work out the bottom tapered bearing. I didn't put the spacer on when I swapped them out so the forks were moving around. Pretty fucking scary and lucky I got home alright. An hour of work and got everything back together and feeling nice.

I have to change out the oil and up-jet the carbs this weekend. Going to have to make a gasket for the clutch side cover since I cant find just that one available. Shouldn't be too hard.

Got some boots last night and a jacket ordered today. Excited about both.

What do you ride with?

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- GOT THE TITLE BUDDY!!!!

Spacer you stay? ?...
I also have a ring left after the bearing swap . ( Cb750 )
Where should it go ?
