The Tortoise: cb350 -Now with metal flake

Re: My cb350 project

This bike looks fantastic.

i also have a CB350 that looks similar to the way yours did when you first pulled it out of a barn.

i'd love to see more pics of your wiring, and also see what you have in store for the rear swingarm and wheel.

the BCR stuff looks great.

good luck with finishing up your project. you look awful close to being done man.

Re: My cb350 project

You seat looks amazing. I think next build I'll go a route that similar keep up the great work.

Thanks for the complements.

As for the rear, I had intended to use the GSXR factory rear rim I have and make/modify a swing arm to fit. However, after being advised with the amount of effor Benjie had to do for fitting his slightly wider rear rim, I'm holding off until the season is over and i have the time to model everything to see what issues might arise.

I'm unsure of my choice between Dual or Single shock design, I suppose it'll really depend on the final mass of the bike, If it's close enough to a sport bike with a single shock, thats the route i'll probably go.

For paint i was Leaning towards British Racing Green, or white. But then i found a gallon of this nice met blue in the garage that was originally intended for a car build. So free is free. If i end up hating it i'll change it.

With the style and colors, fairing etc. I think a couple of high quality, twin reservoir shocks would look fantastic. You could probably get some factory Ducati take-offs,Marzocchi,Ohlins or even the Red Wing H.D./Racing style shocks would look sweet.
I just love the looks of twin shocks over single shockers.

Re: My cb350 project

I'm still not sure about the suspension, i'll tackle that along with the rear wheel some time this winter. That being said, i would love a Ohlins setup with a remote reservoir. But i think it's a little overkill for the 350 frame in this form.

Anywho, about 1/2 done the mock-up of the pipes, I've run into an issue with the collector, so taking Chris's idea of a slip fit setup i'm going to expand 2 peices and then weld them to the collector to solve it.

The collector/pipes are hanging a little low in these pics because the pipes are just held in place by the flanges, they're not bolted tight and the collector is just set in place. I remain hopeful to finish the pipes tomorrow.

Re: My cb350 project

Lookin' good, don't mind that setup at all - especially the tank, its gorgeous.

You'll love riding it, even without fancy-schmancy remote res shocks. Only advice here from an aesthetic point of view would be to paint the front brake reseviour cap, gauge housing and headlight shroud the same colour as your tank/guards. But thats just me.

Cheers, and nice work - boingk

Re: My cb350 project

This build and a couple others are the
best on this forum. I always get excited when you do an update. The exhaust looks good. Now it's time for the final welding and the startup.

Re: My cb350 project

Almost done, still need to finish the baffle for it and make a mount for the muffler.

I think it turned out alright. The slip colelctor worked out fantastically. It's right before the drain plug so oil changes should be extremely easy.
I've got to tig it up later this week and then polish it.

Only question, do i reverse the cone or keep it as a megaphone? I'm undecided

If you are looking for opinions, I would shorten it about 2 inches and do the reverse megaphone

I would skip the baffle and add a reverse cone with a 2" outlet. I'd also keep it the same length. What is the cone inlet and outlet diameter?

--Chris

Re: My cb350 project

inlet is 1.75", outlet is 3.5"

I was thinking about cutting it where the diameter is 3", flipping the cut section and re-welding

The only issue without a baffle is the 4 floors of parking garage i have to ride up and out of...i think that might piss some people off.

On the topic of paint, I can never decide on anything, that Metallic Blue i posted before, Black or white?

thanks,

Matt

Re: My cb350 project

I'm diggin' the exhaust! I say top it off with a billet aluminum reverse cone and use glass pack baffles. I'm not a fan of open pipes on these twins, just too loud and harsh for my tastes. A big, round bass tone would be nice.

Re: My cb350 project

i love what you've done with the bike so far. i'm always checking for more pictures :)

Re: My cb350 project

it's pretty much perfect! looks fast!

Re: My cb350 project

exactly what batteries are you running? It looks like youre not running the electric start, is that right? I need to figure out where Im going to put my battery(s) and am having trouble figuring out what battery I should go with.

Re: My cb350 project

i think you should paint the rear fender black so it blends into the tyre, i find it a little jarring, though it is nice to see a well built bike with concessions to practicality. is that the angle it will be on, or has it not been installed yet?. on overall colour, i'd think about british racing green, pearl white, or a candy kawasaki h purple

Yes, no electric start, no need for one on these small bikes. This one sat for 14 years and fired up first kick after it had a tune-up. The batteries I used are 12v 2.3ah sealed led acid. I used 2 and wired them in Parallel. They measure about 2x6x1.25. If you look back in the thread you can see where i mounted them. I picked them because they cost $2 each from a local surplus store

Heh, i know, i'm not a huge fan of the fender myself, actually everyone wants me to either chop it short or get rid of it. The fender in the recent pictures is just set in place. It sits like the picture below shows.

Exactly, you want a nice deep burble, not an obnoxious, loud crappy sound.

Weld the baffle to the cone so it it can be installed and taken out as one unit. Secure the cone in the back or wherever you want with a bolt/screw etc. and make sure the font of the baffle sits up against something or make a tube/fixture for it or else it could rattle and or eventually cause the baffle screws to wiggle loose. That's bad when you hear your bike go full song, look behind you and a car/truck is running over your nice little baffle you worked so hard to build.

Also there was a reason Dunstall and others used reverse cone exhaust. It speeds up the escaping exhaust right before it exits the system helping to scavenge the remaining exhaust air in the system and help pull it out the tail. Kinda like a free power vacuum cleaner. That means less already burnt, hot, power robbing gases get sucked back into the combustion chamber.
