There's Hardy Board screws?

I'll have to check into them.

Hardie is okay with 1 1/4" roofing nails or #8 nib screws of the same length. Here's their install info:

Re: The Aviary?

I've been using the ring shanks because I didn't want to have to worry about them backing out.
Home Depot has the square head Hardie screws in stock. I think I'll pass through there Friday on my way home from work ;)

Keep in mind that you need a Serious Fucking Drill to get those screws to sink flush into the hardie board, while galvanized roofing nails come in a big long run and take about a tenth of a second to sink. You'll spend the money on screws as fast as on the nailgun.

Re: The Aviary?

Red,
I think that with the sheets of Hardie, the screws are your best bet. I put the siding on my house including cedar shake on the front gables and I did it all with a roofing nailer. I also blind nailed so I wouldn't have to fill over every freakin nail! Not every nail that went in made a perect counter sunk hole but in my case it didin't matter. Now I did quite a bit of research before I did my house and James Hardie does say that it needs to be painted over the primer that it's comes with. They also say that it shouldn't butt up against roofing shingles or concrete. While we were waiting for the painters to do their thing we caught some rain and if I remember correctly it left a slight stain. Anyway, I haven't checked this thread in awhile but it's coming along nicely. I'll probably be going out tomorrow to try to get a building permit from the parish and get my add-on started.

Truth :D
Hell, I already screwed the budget. I may as well treat her like the whore that she is :p

'bout $25 for a 800 count box of screws should do the trick. That's just a tad more than I paid for the ring shanks. And I have a 19.2v Craftsman Hammer Drill. If that don't do it, I have a spanky new 110v Craftsman drill I've been itching to use.

Re: The Aviary?

Great price for the screws! Make sure to pick up a couple extra square-head bits if you don't have spares around. And have fun!

Re: The Aviary?

Got a little more done today...

All walled up :) They went up alot quicker with the screws. Especially when you consider the time advantage of me not jumping up and down/cursing/holding my thumb every 20 minutes or so.
No tin on the roof yet though. Hopefully the rain will hold off long enough tomorrow.
At this point it's really not more than a days work from putting a lock on the door. Of course it still needs to be caulked, trimmed, painted, etc. But I think I can start moving stuff in after next weekend (at the latest).

Yay :D

Re: The Aviary?

Just in time for me to be done with Mardi Gras!!!!

Re: The Aviary?

Cool!!

Of course you realize, shop space will be allotted in direct proportion to time spent during construction... right?

Re: The Aviary?

Man that's a lot of work... you should have just bought my vacation place in Bay Saint Louis. House is on stilts, carport underneath plus an enclosed workshop. And then there is the detached shop, the dock on the canal, the fire ring...

Looks better than the junk I work out of (even if it is a bit smaller than my barn, the garage, the RV shed)... most of my outbuildings are from the 1920s, the farmhouse is circa 1841. I keep getting hollered at for putting the barhopper on the manor house porch...

Lisa and I are going to try and be down on the coast next weekend for our 16th anniversary. She hasn't been back down there since we moved from Long Beach MS in July of 99...

Sounds great to me! If you're willing to sell it for $3500, I'll have the cash for you when you get down this way next weekend ;)

Re: The Aviary?

After what the Big Bitch did to the place in 2005... It STILL isn't 100% back in order. Storm surge put mud in the roof trusses... Think my "fossil in law" said the water line was 26 or 28 feet through BSL. We were living on the west coast for Katrina... the place we lived in Long Beach is still just a pile of sand. If you remember where Mason Avenue WAS (Taco Bell was on the corner) we were the house that had the 1946 cabin cruiser in the front yard. You could see it from US 90...

That's cool, for $3500 I'd expect it to be a "fixer upper" ;)
Do you want that in big bills or or 10's and 20's?

Re: The Aviary?

Feels good when you get the wall coverings up eh? ;D nice work buddy......andy...

Re: The Aviary?

Nah. I got it almost done and decided it didn't look right.

So I bulldozed it and I'm starting over :p
