The Whack Shack (formerly known as The Aviary)

Re: The Aviary?

I have Hardy Board on my house. Yes, it is a pain to cut and put up, but I do not regret it at all. Also most insurance companies rate structures with HB as a brick structure, and have a lower rate. Just in case you are adding it to your home owners policy.

Re: The Aviary?

Looking good Chris! Good thing you got something done before this rain! It's pouring in Fourchon, hopefully it stops in the morning! Getting off the ship tomorrow and I don't want to get wet... You know cause suga melts haha

Hmmm, I had no idea about that. And I do plan on adding the shop to my homeowners ins. Thanks :)

I shoulda put a smilie after my "hope it's worth it" comment. I was really just being silly.
This stuff is touted as being sooooo much better than T-11. It won't rot like wood, doesn't need to be painted, and they claim it to be far superior hurricane protection. It's one of the things that put me over budget (at about $30 a board x 22). But it should outlast the rest of the building! The biggest issue I have with it is that trying to drive a nail through it seems to be a black art. Or maybe I should say a Black and Blue art... as my thumb can attest to :p

Weird, my pneumatic nailgun is yellow.

Re: The Aviary?

Michigan. Probably forty bucks to rent for a weekend, though. And christ are they fun!

Re: The Aviary?

Get a daily price and then see if you pick it up, say, Friday night, and return it Monday morning if they'll cut you a break.

It really is a ton of fun to use. Requires a decent pancake compressor at the least - and so long as you don't put any through your hands, you won't be nearly as sore (and you'll have it clad in a couple hours).

Re: The Aviary?

Nail guns are just the right tool for that. I have built 3 sheds and a cabin and the nail gun makes short work of framing sheathing. Siding. Roofing etc. Just rent. Borrow or buy one. You will not be sorry

Re: The Aviary?

+1 on the nail gun for putting up the HB. Driving nails through concrete with a hammer is indeed tricky!

The Aviary?

So you're telling me you built this whole shop without the use of a nail gun? Damn that's hardcore man.

Get you one! I'd be glad to loan you mine but its a bit far lol I'm sure someone near you had one you can borrow though

The first nail to go into it was through the HB. Everything else is screwed together.

Smart man. I would say 80% of my shop is the same way. I spent a fortune on decking screws, but it makes such a nice structure.

Re: The Aviary?

We used the hardy board screws for ours at the house.. Screws just go right in nice and smooth. I thought nails weren't for that cause it can cause the board to split and crack..

Re: The Aviary?

There's Hardy Board screws?

I'll have to check into them.

Re: The Aviary?

Yea, get them at Lowes.. They have a different tip so it eats out the hardy board. Unless you have a nail gun that's the easiest way. That's what my dad and I used on the house..
