What does everyone do for their "real" job?

Some of you guys do some cool shit, I could never be a chef. I love to cook but ive worked in a kitchen at a restaurant and Its hell. Any ways I am in Oil and Gas, so Im just good ole Texas Oil field trash. I left collage went to work for my dad who was running the business that his dad started in 1969 when oil was like 50 cents a barrell (yes barrel). They struggled along drilling wells and buying up production through the years until the boom from about 75 to 80 or so when oil hit 40 dollers a barrell. My dad took over around 94 and my grandad died in 2001, the same year I came back to work. Well almost Ten years later my dad has fucked me over and I started my own Oil and Gas business by buying 50 existing oil wells and going it on my own. Its a pretty good living and I am happy to do it every day. Im eyeball seep in dept and hoping to God oil doesnt crash again. So when you guys pay for gasoline, remember the little guys out here trying to make it work. At 60-70 dollers a barrell it damn near cost as much to get it out of the ground than it does to sell it.

heres a shot of my work horse and one of my wells

new bike build coming soon i hope, or resuming my existing CL360 not sure yet.

Mothgils, where is your shop located? And what is the capacity of your CNC's (dimensions/weight)?

Yeah we make a bunch of parts for Dresser-Rand, Weir-Spm, and Gardner-Denver. Guys in the shop complain about the price of gas to get to work but fail to realize when gas is up, business is up

I didn't mention earlier, but my Dad is a Airline mech. for Southwest down in Dallas. I am really surprised at how many of us are in or related to the industry.

We are located on the southside of Indy. I have 3 40 Taper CNC Mills. The tables are roughly 20in - 35in with less than that for machine travel.

I also have 1 30 Taper CNC with a Pallet changer. It mainly does smaller parts and tons of aluminum.

Mothgils that is awesome man! here is a shot of the shop where i do my CNC work... well some of it, the rest is done by a buddy of mine on his bench top or 5 axis in his garage
some stuff is just above my level for me to do

A lot of interesting stuff. I wish I had stuff that that to mess with. My uncle runs a shop with a few CNC machines. Wish I new how to use that stuff.

I used to work for a Taiwanese hand tool manufacturer doing a bit of product dev, a bit of marketing, and a bit of sales. They decided to close their Seattle office though, and I got laid off. Gives me a lot of time to work on my bike though!

Dude's got a 5-axis station in his GARAGE?!!??

.........f*cker........

hehe (this is me being jealous)

That 5-axis would be a "must-have" for my ultimate garage. Those Haas machines are nice. We looked at them last year at IMTS. Sadly we don't have any 5 axis machines. Our programming software can do 3D machining but we didn't pay for that option (not my choice).

I wouldn't mind just having a Bridgeport manual mill in my garage.

I had a fella give me a bridgeport mill last year... powering it is another issue, it still sits in the back of my buddies shop waiting for us to settle on a new location... (we are buying a bigger shop) once we do that ill use the fork to move that sucker into the new location. Will be nice to have that whenever i need.
those CNC's pictured, the company usually makes bike cranks, BMX parts, cell phone parts, and on occasion i can stick in some goodies of my own... they are trying to get into the custom bike world and we are working on a few diff rear set designs... going off the thread that turned into hell-a drama a few months back.

that's what my plan is....fab up some rearsets for mine and a buddies cb550. hopefully i can work out a design that will be fairly inexpensive to fab.

Decision Science Analyst. I make statistical models for a Insurance/Finance company and tell them how to and who to rip off.

Contract Tooling Engineer/Mechanical Designer and Engineering Services. Been involved with Tool and Die for 17+ years now... funny I only act about a year older than that! Spent some time doing Plastics Automation Equipment and Process Piping before that. Took my skills out on my own 2 years ago now and haven't looked back yet. I co-owned a Local Speed Shop and Autoglass business on the side for a few years in the middle as well (sold to my partner) and I am still pretty into the Street Rods!

Update!

I'm not longer unemployed! I got a job as the communications coordinator for the state medical association. Start Monday.

It's not wrenching on motorcycles, but I can't have everything...

Freelance Film and Audio. From small backass stuff to some decent jobs. Trying to shoot as much as I can, used to do a lot of Production audio recording, now mainly Camera Assistant/ Cinematographer.. Also got into live even audio, some sweet gigs there..

Guitargeek, those are some sweet guitars.. Is that a Danelectro/ Silverton U-2? i've had my eye on a U-1 for years now.. never had the spare cash or time to really get one. How do you like it?

motorcycle mechanic at a local shop...work on pretty well every style of bike and we do a bit of custom work. Toads Cycle Works...the original owner had passed away a couple years ago. but he had built some pretty radical bikes in his day. Harleys with 2 engines side by side and the likes.

This was my actual first year as a bike tech, so learnin lots, but still got lots to learn.

cheers
