don't worry i used the back brake on the 550 today and it locks right up and slides the back tire when i stand on it.
but the real good news is that the front brake MC is now shooting fluid out the line! after a month or so of soaking in the dot 3 it shoots fluid right out the line so i have to drill out the caliper bleed fitting? its mostly gone but i think there should be a "brake bleeder" i can attach and hook up to a cup of fluid so i don't suck air back into the brakes when i fill them. anyway

yea i drag my foot. i just recently had to "HIT THE CURB" to keep from hitting a Lexus SUV that slowed down unexpectedly but that was the first time that has happened. i managed to go over the handle bars and not even scuff up the khakis i had on leaving school!!! i am trying to wreck as much as possible before i am on the moto.

cant wait tracj=king info has it at the post office or possibly on the truck usps has the slowest updates re: tracking but ill be sure to take some pics of the used carbs i bought and the rebuild process. the guy i bought them from is the only person selling a cb125 on ebay right now and that thing is spotless!!!!! the video has it running great, if he took care of these carbs the same way ill be riding by the end of the week.

so it begins i got the carbs in and after i calmed down a little i realized the parts the guy shorted me on were not all that important. i have boot that are working fine and the throttel cable attachment cant be that hard to fabricate anyway here is a pic of the deconstruction.
looks like the tops have never been taken of before today either so maybe good maybe not

have a question its related to my build but ts a tech question ill post it on the other place if noone wants to answer.
anyway i am rebuilding my carbs and the screw that holds the slide arm to the throttle lifter thing is stripped.
i retapped it to a standard 6/32 size thread and i am gonna try to find a screw that will fit in there. but if it doesnt work or this destroys the threads could i use two zip ties through the holes?
i know its not a great solution i though about using guitar wire, to zip it up and i may use it to back up the zip tie but anyway let me know if you think it may work????
also i emailed the guy about the missing parts and he seems to be cool. he said he shipped them to me and i am waiting for the bunch of parts that were missing, when they come in i will put it back together. also i stripped down my stock seat and the pan looks great but the foam is weak and the cover is shit so i am thinking about shaving it and recovering the stock pan to use it as my two up seat. \
i am gonna ride it for a while for my transportation because my main ride is a school bus. after i know i can get it legal and pass inspection and it will run and ride, then in the winter i will tear it down and hopefully transform it relatively quickly so i can ride it a lot.
i am in nc and the riding season has never taken a winter of for me ( no snow) sucks for that 2/5 of the country with real winter.
see the hole on the left rod. it should have a screw like on the right with an assembled carb under it

So a bump and short update, i bought some vinyl see pic. and i traded the 650 carbs that came on my 550 for a sweet fiberglass cafe seat!!!! straight up the guy bought the seat and used it as a mold for his own fiberglass one then traded the original to me.!?
anyway so now i have that and i am waiting to get the throttle holder from the guy that sold me the carbs. anyway when i put them back on ill either have pics of me riding or questions about tuning.

what do you think about the seat color?? its almost blood red and it has a texture in the color, not like stripper boots more like leather. eventually i am going with a white and red accent paint scheme so i had to start with that in mind.

i am getting too tired of finding out how hard it is to replace the parts this bike is missing. i ran fuel lines last night ad it is crazy under there!! it needs a fuel shut off and a filter yet the lines need to be about magical because the homemade petcock hangs right to where they meed to tee off to the carbs. i got this thing with no carbs, air box, brakes, and i think the seat and tank are wrond for this bike. also no talights fender brake lights kickstart and a cracked oil pan. then i finally get it to turn over and idle for a little bit and only one cylinder gets hot, number two. i dont get it i just rebuilt the carbs and everything looked good (timing, wires, valves, ect) anyway who needs a good cb550 no title lots of newish parts and completely rebuild carbs all cleaned up and good boots. it does run/rev up/ and idle/ but only when it wants too, see above for missing parts. oh yea after gallons of acid the tank still has a tiny amount of rust delivery to the filter. $600 in wilmington nc
 
White Lightning Hope springs eternal

Well i went to a rumble show or something it was a mix of pedal and motor bikes, choppers and redneck hot rods. some pretty swwet everything!!!!

anyway it got me to thinking that not only do i have a sweet bike. i got damn near everything to put it together and get it running.
so i go over and try one of the tips i think i picked up here. it was to cut the old plug wires and re screw the boots back in to get a better spark. ill be damed if those other two cylinders didnt chime in!!!
so i am back on it, i am ordering ANOTHER set of carbs from a member on this forum after trying for weeks to get the other guy to send me the parts i paid for!!!! :mad: :mad: ??? ::) :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :-\
and realizing that although i de rerusted the tank i need to flush the tank out and i need to seal the exhaust and tune the carbs proper.
i will search for tips on tuning befoe i post the question but here are some pics from the show.
there were a lot of v twins and xs650's but only one inline four. no pics of those my batteries died

Very nice car! That IMO is the best diesel car made. The only thing different I would want is for it to be a wagon! But hey, it's nice nonetheless. Glad you decided to keep working on the bike.

ya the old mercs are cool, but modern bmw diesels are the shit! Finally they are bringing some over here, for too long them have been available in europe only.

for simplicity, reliability, and fixability the 123 126 mercedes are clearly the best. but i will consider the bmw and vw once i start seeing them for sale on craigslist for a grand or less and have 250 or 300000 miles on them.
i really like them because i ran wvo in my last benz for a year and 70 thousand miles. besides a new primer pump. 5$ that car paid for itself ten times over and then i got what i paid for it greasecar kit and all when i went to sell it.
in fact my wrenching on that 300sd has given me the boost to buy a school bus and make an rv/skoolie out of it and also buy this bike and try to fix it up.
Both this is a Cafe forum so i will repond to that question RE; the car/bike show.
that red and blue in fact all of the bikes pictured are tomos mopeds. i think all one cylinder but that one with the boxy tank had it all. NGK ignition upgrades clipons rear sets custom exhaust knee indents it was sweet i even looked on local CL for one........

ill have some bike pics soon. the update on missing carb parts is that he found my box, it never got shipped two weeks ago when he said "its in the mail" i like to believe him and give him the benefit of the doubt, he also refunded my purchase price through paypall but i haven't seen the money in my account or the parts he overnighted to me yet....
i bought a plumbing test cap plug to use as a gas cap. i saw it on sohc4 and it looked cool. i may need to jb weld a thicker flange on my gas tank filler neck to use the smaller plug but its cool i was going to trim up and shave the emblems and original latch posts on the tank anyway.

sorry for the long post no pics just got excited cause i got posts from people watching my "build" /meltdown. this is supposed to be a break from stress of grad school but i geuss it will be worth it. every time i see guys humping along in the wrong gear on a 25000$ factory custom or doing wheelies on their brand new zxy 90000 i think " He probably doesn't even change his own oil"

Ill be sure to bribe you guys again with pics next time.

i lied so sue me.
i did buy a fiberglass seat i am just waiting for the guy to stop by here so i can pay him for it. i also had the bike running a few times and here is my bike technical update. only two cylinders were combusing. not the 1/4 combo but just 3 and 4 were getting hot. i already cut back the plug wires and rethreaded the boots on there so i decided to pull a plug before taking the carbs off again or trying to tune the idle screws.
only two plugs had any spark in them... they were all black and the two that were not sparking were a little wet, but i tried every combination, i check the good plug on the bad cylinders, spark... tried the bad plug on good cyclinder... no spark. it seems crazy to me but even though the porcilin wasnt craked they still didnt work

this is new to me as i drive a 1984 240d and i just had a glow plug go out in it. i pulled it out to check continuity with my new harbor frieght mutimeter and low and behold it says W Germany. my glow plug that just burned out at 220000 miles was probably the original, as west germany hasnt been around for a while..!!!!! :eek: :eek: :eek:

so anyway i am gonna get the new plugs and here is my question. i suspect i will be running lean as i have custom filters (seat foam clamped across throat) would i be better off making adjustable stacks with a way to decrease air flow to meet the standard plug needs and then tune the needle or should i just get colder plugs to compensate for the slightly lean condition??
i am just trying to make this think run safely with what i got.

lastly i used my mulitmeter to figure out which wires are my taillight and which is my brake light, then i freed up the rust that was keeping my rear brake spring light actuator from moving so now once i wire it up i will be close to legal!!!!

so as promised here are some pics and a video. i bought some ngkd8ea. plugs and put those in... this video is taken with no air filters and the choke mostly closed maybe 4/5th closed. i am tuned out and trying to find a way to restrict the airflow, the stock air-box is not an option.

another pic shows the battery tender i got the other day. makes me think of a tip! i took the fuse out for the lights and now i can tune and idle my bike twice as long without having to recharge of hook up jumper cables because the headlight don't burn up all my juice.

Make sure to tighten the screw holding on the mufler... that shit was spinning like a top!

it is just excited and dancin it really wants to get some track time... ;)
naw nothing is tight yet just getting it all checked out. i was trying to separate them and once it gets running well and i shake it down i am gonna strip it and paint polish remover delete and block off lots of stuff. after i get nc safety inspection

I'm a little behind in keeping up with this thread, but if this is still a 1973 model we're talking about, no safety inspection is required in NC for vehicles over 35 years old. So there's one less worry for ya.

alas it is a 1976. i could wait for it but... i think i may just get a plate for my old shadow that i scrapped a long time ago and hope they don't notice the vin at the gas station inspection.
or if i ever get up with the last owner, from maryland i wouldn't have to inspect an out of state ride for a year.

well some updates i have been long winded before but i will try to be brief.
school GF work bicycle riding biodiesel wvo anyway. surfing movies travel,,,, anyyyyyyy way
i was just reading some dead threads and i don't want this to become one, so heres the update
i have had it running with no choke and no air-filter, so now it is rich enough i just gotta slowly back it down to close enough to run and i will ride it as soon as i acid rinse my tank again and then blow dry it with compressed air and get my cap fitted.
i have done some work but it looks boring so no pics, i ran new clear fuel lines with dual plastic filters and a T this is all tucked in under the carb. boots, i think they were leaking bad cause i tightened them up and now its running so thats it.
i took the carbs off and apart to clean them thoroughly again and i started sanding the paint for the tank.

here is a survey to leave you with. who likes tank and side cover badges??? and alternatively does anyone want mine i may sell them. good condition not original paint needs touch up so id say great shape paint is a b-.
anyway ill put up some pics someday great work on everyones builds coming along nice. and lots of people bought bikes recently cool
