Wife Bike - CB100

Re: CB100

Haven't gotten to much work done, been broke and needing parts to continue. However, I did take the clutch apart to make sure that 1 it wasn't stuck and 2 it didn't need new plates. Everything checked out. I still need to get the rotor off from the stator, dont have the right size bolt and I couldn't get it off with a slide hammer.. need to try to figure out what the threading is on it to get it off..

You'll be wanting one of these critters:

Re: CB100

Actually just got it off, went to the hardware store and got a 14mm 1.5pitch bolt, crammed it in there as tight as I could, yanked on it with the slide hammer a few times and then smacked it with a hammer and it finally fell off, dont want to have to take it off again thats for sure

After getting it off, I can see that the timing chain tentioner looks nothing like the one in the book. the one I have works simply by pulling up on the tentioner and putting pressure on it, a very simple design (when I took the side cover off however it was not sitting correctly so I dont think it every actually worked. Here is a pick of whats on there now.

Here is what the tentioner that the book says that I should have, I already ordered on of these that works more on a spring to keep the tention.

Anyone comment on which method is better? My $ is on option 2

Yeah , mine was the same thing. I looked at the parts diagram for my 74 and it shows the one you have. I could not find one with the correct part number on ebay so it think i bought mine from the dealer. I am curious if they are the same as the cheap ones from thailand or not.

Well, as can be assessed by the lack of updates, Its not going to be completed for christmas. Ran into some home repair items so money and time got tight. However, things have still been moving forward. Mothgils has been working on the frame some more and its almost done (should have it tuesday), the head is out getting re-built now, I got the motor itself cleaned and painted. Getting ready to finish putting it together now.

Here's the motor with the paint and mostly back together

Heres a closeup on the old piston and the new just to see how bad it was.

I dont work until after christmas, so its a mad dash to see how much I can actually get done before that time.

I'll be following along too since I'm also building a small single cafe bike (CB125 in a XL100 frame).

What did you do decide about going to a 125 motor? I faced the same dilemma. I had a 100 motor to start with but wanted 125. I found out that the cases need boring in order to receive the bigger mouth of the 125 cylinder. I ended up just getting 125 cases, cylinder, piston and head. I'll swap the 100 guts into the 125 cases. So, I just ended up with a motor that is 90% 125. It would be easier to just start with a 125. The 100 had too many roadblocks to get to 125 (need 125 crank for 15mm pin, need cylinder and piston of course, then head to match, now cases to match the cylinder). Well, at least the 100 motor only cost me $30. The trans is mostly the same. The kickstart shaft is smaller on the 100.

I ended up staying with the 100. I was already to far into the rebuild at that point and I was trying to keep my timeline (which isn't going to be completed).

Got the frame back and painted, and got the head back and its painted up as well. So, Mothgills is coming over tomorrow and we are going to start assymbling. Lots of pics to come.

Let's go fellas! I have faith that you will have it in good enough shape to at least show the wife what she's getting.

Taking a short break here for a little bit while some stuff dries, thats whats killing me. I dont like to paint/clean up the parts until they are ready to go back together so that causes some slowdowns,

However, here are some pics to show some more progress.

Mothgils worked on the rear hoop the last couple of weeks for me.

Had the frame sandblasted and then painted it with some appliance epoxy which seemed to turn out really well.

Got the head back from the machine shop, got it painted up, and have started working on the motor again. Need to get the stator cover on (currently drying) so I can check timing before I can tighten everything up.

Also put some new roller bearings on the tree. to tighten everything up.

Currently trying to figure out what im going to do with my forks before I put them back together. Clean, paint, try to polish? Leave them for now...

Paint them up with the Appliance Epoxy. Two more days, you can do it!

I dont want them black though, I might go over to Lowes and see what other colors there are to choose from.

They have white, almond, and biscuit color (and of course they have black).

I painted the fork lowers on the chop with the biscuit. It is just slighty off-white.

Ran to Lowes and they actually had a metallic silver color. It was a little darker than I had hoped for but it worked pretty well on them. Tomorrow I should have the forks together and on the bike so i'll get some good pics then. I wanted to polish, but I dont have the patients for it.

Picassa changed and I cant seem to figure out how to get the URL for the full sized image anymore.. Need to figure this out or im going to have to start using a different service..

Its starting to look more like a bike now I would say.

I spent about 4 hours today on the wheels.. They were rusted under some shotty paint job... so I had to take a scratch pad wheel and go over all of it to try to get the paint and rust off, then I hit them with some fresh paint. Still looks like crap in some spots because of the amount of bubbling the rust did but its 200x better than they were. I should be able to get them on tomorrow along with a bunch of other stuff. Its no where near done, but it'll look like a bike for christmas at least.
