The tank looks great Troy! Pm inbound
Great idea on having Jim make one. Never crossed my mind. Hard part may be finding the suitable seat pan and springs. PM sent

Re: Willow

Troy, maybe one of the westcoast members could go pick up the seat and you could paypal them to get one of the cheaper ones with the Patina. I know I have done that for a couple of people in the past. I like that tank too BTW.

Cheers

Love that boardtrack style of seat.

As for welding thin sheet, use a chunk of brass or aluminum to act as a heat sink. either a thick piece of if you have a thinner piece make sure it's long. A thinner piece would work better for the curve of the tank.

This guy has some good tips
I appreciate the link. Guy has some good tips. I actually didn't use a heat sink on the upper part of the tank and did ok. Once I got to the bottom it was a different story. For some reason the metal seems thinner and once in awhile it would blow through. Nothing major that I couldn't fix but PITA and time consuming. Even using the copper sink I was still having problems. The metal in the video has a nice rolled edge that makes it look much thicker than it is (im guessing its 20g)but even so, its still heavier than what I'm welding (23-24g). I think I'll get it. I just have -0- experience welding on anything this thin. I appreciate the tips though. All are encouraged and welcome

I considered putting a feeler out there to do that. I just didn't want to bother anyone. One is in Portland and the other in San Fran. Thanks, this might be enough to push me to do it. It might be worth a shot.

Where is that post with the fantastic boartrack seat anyway? I read the post in my email and erased it. Beautiful inspiration

Fix: Would you like some time alone with my little scoot? haha. Thanks for the compliment man

Re: Willow

Hey Troy:

That thin stuff is tough to weld with TIG--never mind MIG. That fact that you did that with flux core is pretty amazing. I really think you're going to be chasing your tail on this: fighting burn-through, porosity from the flux, etc.

If you'd like, you could always cut it back apart and tack it together. I'm happy to TIG it for you. It would have to be super clean with preferably tight gaps. But the result would be a quick sanding with a roloc and (possibly) a little body filler before paint.

No harm either way, and I don't want to sound overly negative. I just wanted to put the offer out there again.

--Thanks, Chris

Re: Willow

Troy....hit me with the seller's info and I'll try and snag that seat for you. Don't hesitate brother.....

Re: Willow

A buddy of mines family owns a bicycle shop here in town as well. If Lees plan doesnt pan out for some reason let me know. They always have a bunch of vintage bikes floating aorund and are heavily involved in the bicycling community around Pittsburgh. They may be able to help find a seat.

Chris,
Can't tell you how much I appreciate the offer. Glad someone knows how though this is and its not just a case of my lacking skills haha. I honestly feel I can get this though. It's a challenge for me but I think I will be all the better if I can do it. good news is after today I think I'm on over the hump. Thanks again for the offer. I really do appreciate it.

Swagger,
I checked the Portland craigslist ad today and its been removed. I still have the girls email so I'll send her a quick message to see whats going on. I have a feeling though that at the listed price its probably gone. Appreciate the offer. If I hear something I'll let you know.

Mike,
Doug is checking to see if one could be hand made by Jim. However as fast as these get sold
if you don't mind you might give your guy a shout. Just find out if he has any Brooks saddles. I'm looking for one with springs.

Re: Willow

man i am loving this tank! i almost think that if you do not final grind the welds it could flow witht he bike nicely... very cool

Re: Willow

Thanks Joe. Honestly its pushing my limits but I'm loving how its turning out. Leaving it Raw is a thought.... I'll decided once it gets a little closer. Thanks again man.

Re: Willow

well keep at it man! i have been welding like a mad man lately, new service our shop offers is custom turbo fabrication and Timmy the welder in the shop is AMAZING i do not think there is anything this guy can not do... have been over his shoulder trying to learn as much as i can. i am about to split a tank and do the same for my CB350 build once the HD is done... may need to hit you up for some tips!

Re: Willow

Hi Troy:

Sounds good. You never learn much by letting others do it for you. In the end, there's a lot of pride in what you're doing.

Re: Willow

Troy, I am loving your work and design, as always! You sir have taken the "built not bought" to a whole new level! You already have had one of the best bikes I have ever seen like 2 or 3 times, and I am sure this evolution will be another. Love it brother, keep it up!

Joe I wish I could help but unfortunately I'm not the one to ask. This is pretty much my first experience with a mig welder and I'm flying by the seat of my pants haha. Sounds like you should be in good hands though with Timmy around. Two things I can say but are pretty obvious are make sure the tank is clean and once you are welding don't stay to long in one area. Just keep moving. The tank will probably be 1/8" and should be pretty easy to weld. If Timmy's never done tanks before check back and I'll give some tips on prepping the tank. I don't want to post the info here because welding on a gas tank is certainly not something I'd recommend for many people to do themselves (I don't want lil johnny, jim bob websurfer to read this and blow himself up haha) . Anyway, just pm me and I'll help all I can.

Thanks man you are so right. Its def been a challenge for me. I would have almost gave anything for this thing to have been at least 1/8" though. I'm hanging in there and I know I'm getting better already. But its not been without frustration. I was having one hell of a time last night. Wire was feeding erratic yada yada. Most of the time it seemed too slow so I kept turning up the speed and I didn't know what was going on. After a couple phone calls we figured out the reason I kept turning the speed up was that my tip was shitty. Pick up some new tips today and it made a world of difference. But I'll tell ya I'm so ready to weld on something else for a change...haha

Twisted thank you for the kind words. It speaks volumes about your character. Thank you!!!

Re: Willow

About the only thing to report is I finished the upper tunnel welds today. Turned out pretty nice. I'll grab some photos with the next update. Still no luck on the seat. They disappear almost as fast as the ads appear on craigs. I found them pretty reasonable new on line but I'm still hoping for reasonable priced used.
Anyhow, I can't add the seat post until I have the seat in hand. Hopefully I'll have something by the time I'm ready.
I did happen across a company in India that makes early 1900 reproductions. No prices were listed on their website so I shot them an email. This is one of the saddles they make. This one is used and on ebay right now. With any luck I my saddle woes will be over haha
