Willow...An Evolution

Re: Willow

Done deal. Won the saddle. Just got off the phone with the guy and it will be shipped tomorrow! I'm stoked

Re: Willow

Wow...turn my head for a moment and you're off like a shot in yet another direction!
What prompted you to not use that nifty fiberglass seat you'd sculpted?

Re: Willow

Troy, check out weldingweb.com they have some mods for wire welders that is supposed to smooth out the feed and and make the arc more stable.

Thanks man you are so right. Its def been a challenge for me. I would have almost gave anything for this thing to have been at least 1/8" though. I'm hanging in there and I know I'm getting better already. But its not been without frustration. I was having one hell of a time last night. Wire was feeding erratic yada yada. Most of the time it seemed too slow so I kept turning up the speed and I didn't know what was going on. After a couple phone calls we figured out the reason I kept turning the speed up was that my tip was shitty. Pick up some new tips today and it made a world of difference. But I'll tell ya I'm so ready to weld on something else for a change...haha

Twisted thank you for the kind words. It speaks volumes about your character. Thank you!!!

Re: Willow

Swagger
Haha, I thought everyone knew. Yeah, the seat is what I was pissing and moaning about trying to find on Craigslist the other day.
Not using the tanks ether. I want to build a saltflats racer but not with this base. As hoofhearted pointed out my new tank (the one that's taking me forever to build) may look even more salt flat racerish but that might be more for those in the know. At least that's what I'm hoping. I felt like the tanks were very user specific and thats not the direction for this one. Left me with some sleepless nights haha. Anyhow, more on that subject a few pages back.

That seat is nice, but I want to see you make one from scratch... :)
Crescent,
Hahaha I already did that. Old seat was a skateboard deck and some flat for a hinge. I'm moving up in the world. haha

Hey Troy,
Appreciate the link. I'll check that out. I know one thing that would help me a lot would be to get off flux core, then weld something other than 23-24g haha. Appreciate the link brother. I'll def check it out, thanks. Hey my buddy here in town just picked up one of the welders from Tim. Wish that would have worked out for you too.

Re: Willow

I wish the welder deal would have worked out too. I hope I can get a discount through the school when I start my summer classes.

Re: Willow

If I could figure out how to get the money off my paypal I'd go pick the thing up and ship it to you. I know he still has two more

You've got your paypal account setup with your bank account? That's how I've got my setup. I'm registered as a business but I just had to verify a bank account to be able to take money out.

Re: Willow

The seat is killer Troy!
And the guy you got the welder from was kind of a weird dude, huh? My buddy called him and said hed be there with cash in hand that weekend. The guy said he wouldnt meet him any time other than a thursday afternoon. My buddy has school and work, so he couldnt do it, and the guy just stopped responding basically. Kinda stinks... Oh well. No biggie. Looks like my boy is going to wait, save up and buy a MIG/TIG setup instead.
The bike is going to be awesome though. Im really pumped to see what you come up with for a final product. Im sure it will be great, and like the previous builds, very detailed.
Also... You keep saying you have another bike in mind for the "LSR" bike. You even mentioned a 750 a while back... That 1/4 tonner in the garage get a new plan for it? Hahaha

Re: Willow

Ahh...now I see the bit I missed.

I really dig the frame mod, at first I was worried that the phase of the arc would allow excessive flex but it doesn't seem to be the case. As much as I liked that glass seat you had started I see where you're going with the Brooks saddle too....it's going to be really neat when you're done.

I have mine set up on a credit card and not to a bank account. Can't withdraw money but if something ever happens (stolen) I'm covered. My son had his account compromised two years ago. By the time he notice (1 day) they had taken $3k. He was responsible for everything after the first $50 which the bank so graciously took care of. Hard to take when it was all he had and worked full time while attending college. Nothing I hate more than a thief

Oh and glad you like the seat

Glad you like the seat man. I think it falls right in line with what i'm after.

No I really wouldn't say weird. The guy is a little older and doesn't do paypal and mainly wants to deal local. I knew he didn't do business on the weekends. Jason wanted to drive down on the weekend to pick his up too and he wouldn't do it. He did however drive an hour in my direction to meet me and for Jason's he drove an 11/2 hrs and dropped it off at a business friend of jasons. That's not too bad if you ask me.
Not sure what I'm going to do with the 750. I still would like a sport crusier but that could change. Just seems so far down the road...

Glad you're seeing it now. I'm really excited about where its headed. I feel like I'm onto something pretty special if I must say so myself. Every time I walk into the garage its almost surreal. I've never had that feeling before.

Re: Willow

Not much progress to report. I cut the gusset from under the seat rail where it met the backbone and got the frame ready for the seat post (seat post will tie into the backbone and take place of that gusset). Figure the seat post will be at a pretty hard (horizontal) angle so I'm going to use the gusset I removed from under the frame, on the top to help support the seat post. anyhow, I have some Arts council functions coming up so i expect progress to be pretty slow for a week or two. Hopefully I can sneak an hr or two here or there though....

Re: Willow

I think its time to get you guys up to date.
The seat arrived and I didn't like it. Mostly the way it looked on the bike. Kicked around different seat ideas (even tank ideas) but wasn't feeling any of it. I came to the conclusion that the backbone was throwing it all off. No matter what I did it looked long and dragracerish. Time to change directions!
To get her back on track she needed more flow, more fluid like lines or maybe even to be a little organic if you will.

Bent some conduit and played with lines
The two pieces of Conduit are close to what they would be. The way it is with the arc above the tank would allow the tank to be a bit flatter towards the front and roll off in the back. I could make it arc more in the front but that would really affect the tank shape. Plan is to keep the line somewhat low.

New back bone:
The very cool part of this is I've been able to bend all the tubing in my pipe bender. It took some work but well worth it. I'm quite pleased with how the bends turned out.
First I ground the die for the bender to an exact fit. Pipe is measured ID and tubing is OD. The dies are a little small for tubing. I used the same technique to do the small tubing on teh bottom rails. Anyhow, Laid the tubing on my wood stove and got it warm. I tried a few bends first and got nice results. I was considering filling the tubing with sand but it really wasn't necessary. Anyhow, this is what I got: 1.5" dom 120 wall slugged and ready to be welded up.

After a bunch of bracing, and cutting away the old back bone got it tacked in. I decided to leave the motor in to help as a jig. The top motor mount was flipped forward and welded to the down tube. The braces welded from the bottom tube to the steer tube. Cut out the old backbone I had extra shit welded all over this thing haha

This is where she is at today:

bent a piece for the rear vertical support (at the coils mount) and also made the lower cross piece where it attaches to the bottom rails Its a pretty subtle detail because its kinda hidden, but its a nice touch(thanks Doug, good call). Also cut off the kick stand. It hung below the rear arched bottom rails. It will get moved forward.

Plan for the tank to be made from scratch. Going to use 16g sheet metal. From above it will match the radius on the sides which is the same as the backbone. Going to be pretty narrow and taper off at the rear. I'm still working on figuring out the electronics and wiring. Think I'll run a capacitor. Also plan to weld eye bolts to the frame to hold any exposed wires. The tail light is getting tucked above the upper rail real nice and tight to the tire. I'm thinking about using an old cadillac light. The license plate will have a reverse radius. Anyhow...

Its still only tacked together but I was able to cut off all the bracing and roll her off the table.
I put the chain, coils, and the carbs back on for a peak. I still have a but load to do, but here she is:
