Ain't that purty?

Cold ass garage keeps me from getting a lot done. But I did start cleaning up the tank.

Getting there, but all this is by hand, as I don't have a buffer. Even if I did, it'd be out in that cold-ass garage.

Once the tank is set, the next order of business is a lot less fun. I have to dissect that wire harness. I keep putting it off, but it's just been too squirrely.
I'm going to make the trip down to Barber this year come hell or high water, and new electrical is a reliability point I cannot neglect.

Wow...damn.....
that tank looks spectacular! That's just stripped and hand buffed?
Amazing work...
Who do you plan to keep it shiny and rust free?

Yep, stripped and hand sanded up to 2000. I'd like to hit it with a wheel and some rouge. I have a derelict clothes dryer in the garage that the wife gave me permission to gut for a motor. Going to try and build a buffer out of that.

I talked to mysta2 about it, and he recommended I try it one season without clearcoating or anything. He leaves his raw and just buffs it whenever the evil oxide nations invade.
I'm debating leaving the knee dents with a brushed look to break it up a bit. I think brushed may rust faster though.

I haven't heard from anyone that has successfully cleared over polished steel, but if you're out there, let me know what you did!

Believe it or not. a periodic waxing will work. But re paint the tnnel and other areas you wont be able to get to while waxing.

Bike looks great man. A vast improvement over stock so far.

Keep it up!

agree just wax it... worse comes to worse we can slap some clear that is formulated for polished metal on the tank... looks awesome

Nice, thanks guys. I'm in the process of doing an interactive version of a xs1100 wiring diagram I found. Make it higher resolution and able to highlight or hide specific elements. Once I'm done with that (hopefully today) I should start gutting and tagging wires.

Getting some work done on the badges. Still need a coat or two.

Here's what I'm thinking with the seat rails.

Now:

Soon?

The burning question is, with good welds, will that fuck too much with my frame strength?

I want to drop the seat a couple inches in the rear, but not at the cost of structural integrity.

Well, the 11 is a heavy bike and while I've seen it done like that on smaller bikes I wonder how well the upper shock mounts would hold up out at the end of the tube.
If you move them to the new joint at the back then the frame's strength should be ok, just pick up some 11" sportster shocks and you'll get the nice low ride height, the dropped seat and at least some suspension still out back.

Good point, she is a heavy bitch. Guess I'll venture in to the arctic garage and take some eye-to-clevis measurements. The other option would be a gusset maybe?

12.5 stock length, But the bushings are different on the left and right. Shouldn't be a big deal to get different bushings into 11" sportster shocks, should it?

Here's where I'm at so far.
