While this has all been going on, I've been fighting to get my rotary-powered Datsun 280z ready for the first hillclimb event.

I've soaked and cleaned the pistons a few times, but those rings don't seem to be coming loose. I'm considering taking them to a friend with a lathe to have the rings machined until they weaken enough to fall out, at this point.
Keeping the hub and re-lacing with 17" wheels. Sorry, keeping all the brakes as-is. It's much simpler than measuring hubs, making/ordering spacers, and possibly converting to disc brakes. More work than I have time for, right now.
It's not really one or the other. The two kind of munge together. One gets 17" wheels, the other gets 18" wheels ... otherwise, just consider it a double-bike-refresh.

Several hours and several broken tools later, the instructions in the FSM have completely failed me. The recommendation to rotate the engine in order to remove the cam gear were nothing short of infuriating.

I dug into the cb360 (my girlfriend's) and started some fact gathering. The kicker spins, and it spins the rear wheel if in gear. From that, I can tell that the transmission spins freely.

That's generally the plan, leave the bike alone as much as possible. Just run it as Honda intended. I've ridden a few friends' stock 350's and 360's, and while they're just good bikes all around. I definitely enjoy a more trimmed-down bike though, especially when the engine is as power-limited...
