I wound up getting a 59 XLH, I wound up using only the motor and the rear wheel. the motor needed a total rebuild, the trans counter shaft bearing race was destroyed. I wound up getting the bearing race welded up, put the motor together, decided I didnt trust the repair, torn the motor down...

take one of the piston rings off and stick it in the barrel at different points. Measure the ring gap with a feeler gauge, ill bet they are wider in the middle then top or bottom. I would bore em out and fit new oversized pistons, just looking at the scoring on the pistons and walls.

Cool, I've kinda come to the same conclusion about XS hardtails. I just finished de-tabbing and painting my frame. Motor is out and getting new pistons blah blah blah. Point being a clean bare bones XS is a thing of beauty. Im still gonna build a rigid shovel after I sell my 59 ironhead...

why do you say no way to stop, that rear brake is totally functional, the front one will help. There are things I dont care for about this bike, but its general safety isnt one of them. I you ride a rigid, drum braked bike like a rigid drum braked bike, not a three disk sportbike, your fine...

whats more confusing is why Morris bothered to make a Magneto set up for them when the PMA kit is around. I run a HHB PMA on mine with no battery and its flawless.

Ok first of all what kind of alternator is in that puppy. If its an excited field alternator, you have no choice, you need a battery. If its a permanent magnet alternator then youre in luck. If by some brilliant foresight the good people at suzuki had the good sense to use the good old PMA...

Re: '81XS650 chop. ♡♥♡♥♡ If you ever decide to ditch the battery I can tell you that the HHB PMA kit with a cheap $2 capacitor and decent coils makes good fat spark on a lazy kickover. Just sayin. Bike looks good dude.
