    Any other Aussies still around?

Very Nice Skogga...Can quite see what colours you've gone with on the casing and side covers. Mine is currently in pieces being cleaned up and undecieded with what to paint black and what to leave silver/polished.

    Any other Aussies still around?

Still here and in 'open the borders up' Sydney. Elbow deep in my 1981 XV750 for a few months during Covid lockdown until kids sport started up which took up most of my weekends. Now winter sport is finishing up for the year I'm looking forward to getting stuck back into the Virago rebuild.

    First Build - 1981 XV750

Sunday started off tenderly after a visit to the local pub the night before. With the pubs having been closed for several months and not being a big drinker I forgot to pace myself and tried to keep up with the bigger fellas. Do we ever learn... I decided to see if I could clean up a side...

Can't seem to find any reference to these plastic sleeves on the cylinder bolts. They're only on the front cylinder and they dont seem to make an appearance on any of the exploded parts diagrams or parts lists. One is cactus and the other 3 could do with replacing as well. I'm sure they're there...

    First Build - 1981 XV750

I thought I'd finished taking things apart but forgot about the famous 'Virago Box of Rocks' starter gear so thought I'd better take a look. I've read plenty of 'final fixes' for the box of rocks but they all start and end with...get a good battery and make sure you have a good earth... so...

    First Build - 1981 XV750

Even though I managed to get the pivot bolt out, the needle bearings wouldn't budge. The rollers pretty much fell straight with the first hard hit but it was the outer race that had welded itself on the inside of the shaft. After 4 hours or trying different methods to get them out with heat and...

Mak's step-by-step guide to building an un-original, but still fun, cafe bike

I knew one that if you went anywhere near her tail pipe she'd slam the brakes on and throw you over the handle bars. I've always been told I take things too far ;)

    First Build - 1981 XV750

Pretty much done with the 'taking things apart' stage. Only thing still together is the crank case and I'm more than a little scared to split it, even though it will make prepping and painting so much easier. I haven't planned much past this so really need to take my finger out and make a...

    First Build - 1981 XV750

After almost 4 weeks of trying to remove the swing arm pivot bolt I decided to tale the angle grinder to it. SUCCESS! I need to have a new bolt made up but I got it out. I needed to use a dremel to remove most of the dust cover and I then had just enough space to get the angle grinder in to cut...

Is changing valve springs and guides necessary?

Thanks, I priced them up at only about $40 so pretty cheap. Looks like decision is made then...Is there any reason to replace rings too? At 135psi & 145psi there's plenty of compression. The main reason I took the heads and cylinders off is to clean up the engine and paint it. Also the rear...

Is changing valve springs and guides necessary?

Pretty self explanatory in the title but a little more info. I have the heads and cylinders off my 81 XV750, it's got 55,000km on the clock and prior to removing the head it had 145psi and 135psi in each cylinder so plenty of compression. I will be replacing the cylinder gasket, head gasket and...

    First Build - 1981 XV750

Continued to remove the front cylinder head and cylinder. It had some carbon buildup on the intake valve but The exhaust valve was a white rusty colour. I'm sure that indicates something amiss but haven't come to a conclusion yet. The Interweb suggest nothing more than the additives they put in...

    First Build - 1981 XV750

This one has won several awards, I believe they have just finished another couple of builds. I like the colour scheme too, either the black and gold or black and silver. I really need to have a plan to work towards, I just taking stuff apart and cleaning it now. The bike pretty much in pieces...

I was originally planning on the benelli tank but have since gone off it. BIg reason is They look so much better with spoked wheels and im unfortunately not going down that path.....unless someone has a spare 1986 shaft drive spoked hub they want to part with. I think the KZ tanks look better...

    First Build - 1981 XV750

Decided to loosen a couple of bolts and before I knew it I had removed the head and cylinder. I only removed the rear one so far which is the one which has been giving me all the troubles running rich and going through plugs every 50km's. Lots of carbon build up on the head and valves. Barely...

    First Build - 1981 XV750

With the rear end completley off it didnt seem right not to drop the engine out.:) so with a bit of swearing and some help from the kids got it out with only breaking a front brake lever.. So 2 weeks ago I wanted to just repaint the swing arm and now my bike is spread all over the garage, how...

    First Build - 1981 XV750

Starting to get a little adventurous and wanted to get the swing arm off as had surface rust all over and needed to be polished....actually I planned to sand it back to bare metal, prime and paint. I've since learned that swing arm pivot bolts tend to seize to the bearing inside and don't like...

Decided I like polishing metal so though I'd take the painted exhausts off and polish them up

    First Build - 1981 XV750

Finished polishung up the forks and all back together. I dropped the forks through the triple clamps about an inch, can't say it made much of a difference but it made me feel better

    First Build - 1981 XV750

Easy enough to drop the front forks out once the bike up off the ground and steady. Forks on the bench and scratching my head about how to take the paint off. A scotch pad on a battery drill did the trick although it was slow going and the got the dremel out and wore out all the wire brushes I...
