1970 CB350 Cafe Build

Ridin a CL350 and buildin a CB350 Cafe
So, let me start by saying this is one cool corner of the the internet.

I thought I would throw up some pictures and let you guys know what I have going on. I bought a 1972 CL350 and a 1970 CB350 as a pair a couple months ago. The CL was in running condition, so I tuned that one up and have it running pretty good. Still has and oil leak, always another day.

I plan on doing a cafe racer style build with the CB350. I really like the stripped down look.

I started to rebuild the stock carbs before I realized it was going to be easy and better to not use them (I can use the parts for the CL350). So, I ordered a pair of the black 30mm OKO carbs and mounted them in the stock manifolds with some rubber tubbing to get it running (is my best option the CB360 manifolds?). To my surprise it fired on the right side only after a half dozen kicks. With some starter fluid in the left side to get it going, it fired up and idle just fine.

Now its time to tear it down to the frame and start from the ground up.

I have ordered some clubman bars and I'm working on ordering some rear sets from Viet from this forum.

I need ideas for a seat, if anyone has any others. I don't really want to mess with fiberglass (might have to) and I saw the vintage war helmet which is a great idea. I just feel bad destroying history for a bike.

Let me know what you are thinking.... the good, the bad, and the ugly...

Got the tank, swing arm, and rear peg holders blasted tonight. Should have more time to work on the bike soon. Hoping to get this thing done in record time..... who knows if that will really happen. Will get more/better pictures up soon.

Got my new shinny black clubman bars and tank coating product in the mail too. From the looks of the tank coating product it should be a good one. Looks better than the Kreem Kit.

As for the carbs. Some of the brass in the old carbs was messed up and there were a few other odd parts that I did not have. I figured it would be less of a headache and not that much more "money wise" to just replace them, than rebuild the old ones.

You guys are probably going to laugh when I say I got them from a moped site but I did.

I liked the black a lot and they carry all the jets and needles. Also, they are a D slide carbs which should be a little better.... we'll see.

hmm interesting. my carbs seem to be pretty shoddy too mate. I got an engine that i just can't get to fire. It's got spark, it's got compression, I think the carbs might be faulty. I tried rebuilding them but still no go. Did you say these fit into the stock manifolds? thought about mikuni carbs but they are a bit pricey.

Hey so obviously you got the new carbs but did you have any problems ordering? Im always hesitant ordering from new places... Also are they doing well? Im just about done with my own 71 cl350. I got it fired up tonight but it wont stay running and I already cleaned they carbs well so I think they are shot and I like the looks of the OKOs anyway...let me know how theyre doing.

Thanks

Stephen

No new pictures to post. Just been blasting parts and ordering parts.

The carbs don't fit in the stock manifolds. The carbs are to small. Not sure what to do about that yet. I rig them up to get the engine started to make sure it would run. Haven't been on the road with them yet. They do seem to be a good darn though.

As far as Treatland goes, they are a great online store. I have ordered from them a couple times with no problems. They always answer all my questions. The only bad part is that they are in Cali and I'm in Ohio. It takes forever for the parts to get to me.

Keeping an eye on your build. Very interested to see how these carbs work out for you and how you mount them.

Time for an update... Long time coming... Life happens.

Got the rims cleaned, painted and re-laced. Just need to order some tires. Think for getting the Dunlop K70.

The frame after blasting.

Started framing up the battery/electric box. Should look clean once everything is on the bike.

Got the tank all cleaned out and coated the inside. The coating from KBS worked well. Would recommend it to anyone. (http://www.kbs-coatings.com/cycle-tank-sealer-kit.html) Now its time to try and get this thing straight. Lots of time spent sanding.

Its automotive paint. Maybe one of these days we'll get a powder coating setup. The swing arm and the forks are going to be red and the frame is going to be white with black as the accent color for the smaller parts. Probably going to paint the tank and seat red with a wide white strip down the center with two small black ones on each side.

What paint are you using on the frame? Just wondering if you are using regular paint or the appliance paint. Trying to decide whether to powdercoat frame or just save the money and paint it my self. That $250 could get me new shocks and electronic ignition, lol.

I used appliance paint on my flame and it turned out pretty damn nice. I'd say skip the powder coat and get something more functional. I would also look into frame paint from por 15 igot pj1 fast black to do some frame touch ups on another project we will see howthat stuffworks

Axeugene27 your build turned out really well. Like the clean look. Powder coating is nice up that money can go into much more useful things. Im going to shoot it with automotive paint.

Sorry its been so long but its time for an update. I would like to use the excuse of being to busy but excuses are like butt holes... everyone has one...

Got the kick stand ready for mounting.

Cut off the foot pegs because I'm going to be putting on rear sets. The right side mounting hole was broke off, so had to weld on a thick piece of steel to get it to work.

For all of you out there that think fiberglass isn't flimsy enough, the new and improved cardboard cafe seat. Made of college frozen pizza boxes and painters tape. What more could you ask for?? I don't know. Taking orders now. Send me a PM and I'll make you one right up. Free shipping.

This is just a trial run. Probably going to make the seat pan an inch shorter and the hump a little shorter too. We'll see how it comes out. Going to be made of steel in the end. Just trying to get a feel of how its going to work out.

Nice job man... love the paint choice on the wheels... and thats a pretty sweet shop space you got there, Im jealous!

Thanks, I was planning on taking the color scheme throughout the whole bike. White frame with red swing arm and forks. Not sure how to paint the tank and seat yet, probably black with a red and white stripe.
